  • I don't mind them as a concept. I'm just jealous I'm not young enough to have the spare time and reflexes to get in on one at the ground floor and git good, follow the meta, keep up with the lore and memes...

  • Imposter syndrome is pretty common and it sounds like you've put in a hell of a lot of work turning your life around, so that's something you can and should be proud of.

In the meantime though; remember that often it's not that they actually want to know, they're just looking for common ground or something to talk about. You can be vague or redirect; "I'm in I.T." (not a lie) or "I work for a (whatever industry you dev for) company." (also not a lie) and turn the question back on them. Then ask follow up questions. Most people love to talk about themselves, just give them an excuse.

  • No individual is responsible for everything. But there are a disproportionately small number of individuals with a disproportionately large amount of power over a lot of things that affect a disproportionately large number of people. And you can bet they talk to each other.

  • It used to take me up to two hours to fall asleep at night. Long story short, lots of counselling and a few lifestyle changes later I'm usually under in about half an hour. That's still more than average, but pretty good by my standards. What helped me most was:

Limiting caffeine. Not drinking caffeine after midday really helped reduce general anxiousness and racing thoughts.

Learning to meditate. Clearing your mind and defocusing is a life skill. A short meditation in the evening helps wind down, and when you get good enough at it you can kinda just flip into that mode when you need to sleep. Unclench your muscles and focus on breathing.

No screens before bed. I'm not great at sticking to this one, but if I shut down the pc and put my phone down a couple hours before bed and just read or something, I sleep a hell of a lot better.
