  • We'd have something similar. Maybe more fragmented like Usenet + telnet BBSes + gopher + IRC, or a closed standard like hypercard that you had to license. People want to communicate and put stuff out there to be heard, it'd have happened somehow.

  • I just wanted to throw the AU/NZ plug into the mix since nobody is really talking about it. I don't have enough knowledge about this kind of thing to really have a take on it, but I'm interested to get an international perspective.

  • Agreed. Got the instinct 2 Solar. It does everything I realistically use a smartwatch for, the battery lasts 2+ weeks, and no fiddly little touchscreen to fuck out if I have water or grease on my fingers. Had it longer than I've kept any other smartwatch.

  • As much as I enjoy hating on Apple, their track record popularising niche technology is admittedly pretty good. They made mp3 players mainstream, then everyone else scrambled to catch up. They made smartphones mainstream, then everyone scrambled to catch up. I wouldn't be surprised if they managed to pull off the same thing with VR/AR. Just don't mention the Newton.

  • This is one of those utterly brilliant games that I absolutely hate playing. They had a goal, and achieved it with flying colours. It's just too bad that goal was to create a thoroughly unpleasant, tense, frightening, harrowing experience. I had to put it down and never, ever come back to it.

  • I have used an Mx master and I agree with you, it's a great mouse. But I find it a little too chunky for gaming. Something about the way the shape interacts with my hand makes it jam right up against the heel and forces me to palm grip.

  • Australia isn't that much better. Yeah, you're much less likely to get shot unless it's by the cops, but housing and grocery prices are insane. Public health is kind of okay at the moment, but it's slowly and surely being gutted along with most other public services. It's honestly worse than it was even 2-3 years ago. Disability and unemployment are a labyrinthine nightmare of maliciously incompetent bureaucracy. Workers rights don't suck in some places, but if you're coming in on a visa, you may be required to do work in regional areas, and the employers out there 100% know this and will take advantage of it. Some industries have very strong unions (construction). My state has sick pay guarantees for casual workers and jail time is a possibility for wage theft. I think it's the only one where that's true tho. Otoh we just voted nationally to continue systemic racism, we have nazis sieg heiling in the streets, our prime minister is a non-event and the opposition leader is an angry potato.

  • I'm studying at the moment, so I do a -lot- of research. A tablet + stylus is perfect for me for taking notes on top of lecture slides and reading / annotating pdfs. A folding form factor would be really useful for me, so I wouldn't have to carry around a second device.

  • I always liked Calhoun's solution. Obliterate the Maru. It's either a trap or it's not. If it is, you don't want to leave it there for someone else to fall for. If it's not, you don't want to leave it there to cause a diplomatic incident, and fiery plasma death is probably better than whatever the Klingons / Romulans would do to the crew.

Of course, I don't recommended launching a full spread of photon torpedoes at your gf.
