  • A couple hot takes….

Better a priest than a trigger happy, power tripping moron with a badge.

Sounds like this is just a relabeled guidance counselor position.

Seems like this approach might run into separation of church and state issues as well.

This is going to run into a lot of flak from communities that don’t have common ethics or morality standards with the priest that takes up the position.

Edit: From everyone’s reactions, I think my definition of “priest” may be a bit looser than is common. My definition of priest is any spiritual leader, from the Catholic priests everyone seems to be hating on to Buddhist monks.

And for the record, I would rather trust Hannibal Lecter with the care of my children than leave them alone within potential line of sight of any cop I don’t know personally. Ya’ll distrust Catholics, I distrust police.

  • Why does the UN not issue sanctions against the US for these crimes against humanity?

Who would enforce those sanctions? Assuming that the US didn’t veto them.

“Violence is the supreme authority from which all other authority is derived.”

    • Robert A Hienlein

Like it or not it has been the US that has been acting as the world’s policeman since the 1940’s. It would take an awful lot to bell that cat.

  • In addition to all the suggestions everyone has put in, check your local bookstores. My local Barnes and Nobles regularly stocks audiobooks (or did, I’m not allowed in book or tech stores without “adult” supervision anymore :), both in audio cd as well as mp3-cd. If they don’t have what I’m looking for, often they can special order it. Just have to ask.

For me though, Audible is cheaper. I’ll buy the books, download them and strip the drm off.

  • Not sure if it meets your needs but I’ve been using Audiobookshelf for pulling podcasts. The default web interface is simple and straightforward and you can create secondary rss feeds if you have another podcast app you prefer. Has apps for iOS and android, though the iOS app is TestFlight. As a podcast player it’s decent. Not sure if it does notifications, I tend to disable them.

I started using it because one of the podcasts I listened to ended and I wasn’t able to go back and relisten to the episodes. Decided to start archiving the podcasts I was interested in.

  • Honestly not seeing what the news story is here. Putin claims he won’t be invading any other neighboring nations (he doesn’t have the capability atm) but Ukrainian forces are fair game (they are at war!). The status quo continues, just as it has for the last 2 years.

Russian forces will down a couple of F-16s. Big whoop! At this point the 16s are practically mass manufactured to the point that they are one of the cheapest fighters available. I’m honestly surprised that the Mexican drug cartels aren’t flying them. Damn near every one else has.

  • First, Russia is unlikely to nuke anyone, assuming of course that their nukes actually work. The consequences for a nation that did decide to let off the big firecrackers…. Well, no one has a large enough army or enough nuclear weapons to fight the rest of the world. Or rather, what would remain of it, and the Geneva Conventions would become more the Geneva Suggestions.

As for warning time, that depends on the deployment method. Tactical weapons, you wouldn’t have much, if any, warning. Strategic weapons, anywhere from 5 minutes to a few hours, depending. Tactical weapons tend to have ranges somewhere in the 100 km range, and have, generally a much smaller blast radius.

Interceptors have been developed, (s400, Patriot and others) but how well they would work against a nuclear warhead is untested as far as I know. I think it would depend on how the warhead was fused and triggered.

As for your last question, no clue. My understanding that current warheads range in size from something that can take out a city block to weapons that can take out New York City and everything in between. The only thing the average person can really do is treat it like you would a tornado. Head to your nearest shelter and stay away from windows.

Dr. Tyson says that modern nukes don’t usually have much radiation fallout anymore but still, be upwind if you can and take a shower after the attack but don’t use conditioner.

If the thought of possible nuclear war scares you, you might want to consider learning more about it. There are two channels on YouTube I would recommend as a starting off point, Perun and Kyle Hill. Perun does military economic analysis and Kyle Hill is a science educator with an emphasis of nuclear technology. Both have done presentations on nuclear weapons and their use.

  • For me the advantage of Docker is that a random update to my system is unlikely to crash my self hosted services. It simplifies setting up the services as well but the biggest advantage is that it is generally more stable.

  • I run Jellyfin, but I’ve got a similar situation with our music library. Mine, my mom’s, my sister’s, my wife’s and her mother’s music has (mostly) all been uploaded to our Jellyfin. Before I got married I used to say my music library had everything from A to Z. With as diverse as our tastes are that may now be close to being true in fact.

Jellyfin has the ability to favorite artists, albums and individual tracks, as well as the usual playlist functionality and that has helped a lot. My wife makes big use of the collections function as well.

  • Mostly good, though I’ve got a bug on my desktop. It’s a two monitor setup and if I am running a game like Minecraft full screen on the second display and close out the game Plasma crashes to the login screen. Works fine if I disable the second display. That system is running Plasma 5 - Wayland on Nixos 23.11.

Otherwise, I occasionally run into an app that just doesn’t work, but that’s about all. Sometimes it’s a Plasma on Wayland thing (like with Element) sometimes not.

  • Mastodon (and all of the Fediverse, to be honest) are a VERY diverse bunch. You'll likely find your crowd. Start by using the search bar and searching for hashtag keywords for the things that you are interested in, like #linux, #minecraft or #selfhosting. That will bring up instances of those hashtags your server has seen.

I tend to suggest users new to the fediverse follow @FediTips@social.growyourown.services . They post tips and tricks about the fediverse in general and Mastodon specifically.

  • Your question just solved an issue that has been keeping me on iOS. I use GoodNotes at work as a digital replacement for a thick clipboard of paperwork. I didn’t know that it was available on Android or had even heard of Notewise. Thank you!

As for answering your question, not that I had found over the last 3 years. At least on Android or iOS. When I ask online I’m always pointed towards Obsidian or LogSeq, which while they are great if you sit at a desk, aren’t the same use case as GoodNotes. They are more for Markdown formatted text file notes. Looks like there’s a few options now if you want to start running a Linux tablet though.

    Thanks again!

  • Both are great if you’ve got a keyboard or can use one, but they aren’t quite the same usecase as GoodNotes. GoodNotes is more a PDF annotation software but with bell and whistles added in that make it more functional as a digital notebook, with document scanning and web collaboration tacked on as well.

I’ve been looking for a suitable replacement for 3 years but everything I’ve tried has been short of the mark.
