  • We may be heathens but we always just hand washed ours with a good grease cutting liquid detergent to get the rancid oils and spices out.

  • Given the cost of the archival footage upgrades for the DS9 documentary ‘What we left behind’, it’s really surprising that they didn’t work from the LDs as one of their sources.

Good to know that the Voyager LDs exist even if compiling a complete set may be the challenge.

  • I’m very interested to see how they build out this species.

Given it’s so far in the franchise future, there was always the possibility he was another mixed species character, but having a connection with legacy species that’s been largely undeveloped, is a better choice.

  • @virtualbri@mastodon.online really needs to see this. I know he liked one of your other laserdisc captures.

This is truly awesome, and the raw, un-upscaled analogue image data seems like a far better point of departure to reconstruct higher resolution DS9.

I hope he can see this post and thread via my tag to his Mastadon ID.

I have to ask whether you have any Voyager on LD as well…

  • Actually, TrekMovie makes the case that the references in the reply to the need to ‘time things out’ for the franchise was the answer. I would parse that as their having other Star Trek franchise products ahead in the queue.

The person asking really let Cheeks off the hook though with their final question being, “Is Trek still a priority for the company?”.

No matter how specific the preceding preamble was to Legacy, the question they got to was super general and let Cheeks take it wherever he wanted.

  • You are so missing out on the wonder that is Sam Kirk.

SNW has a lot delightful surprises, but adding the insouciance of Sam Kirk, but having brothers Kirk spar when Jim shows up on occasion, is truly inspired writing.

Not to mention he really gets under Spock’s skin.

  • It’s a journey. You may find that a wide variety of neurological and muscle issues ease or vanish with a super strict GF diet. There’s also evidence that within 5 years of starting a true GF diet many with celiac find that other food intolerances wane or disappear.

I just bought a gluten free cookbook that comes highly recommended called ‘The Gluten Free Cook’ by Cristian Broglia, an Italian chef, who looked for naturally gluten free recipes from around the world. This seems to be the kind of thing that might be useful to you. (Haven’t really tried much in it myself yet.)

One cookbook that I find super reliable is ‘Healthy Gluten Free Eating’ by Davina Allen and Rosemary Kearney of the Ballymaloe Cooking School in Cork, Ireland. Ireland has the highest prevalence of celiac in the world and the Chef’s school there has been at the forefront of developing workable recipes.

Another cookbook that I rely on is ‘Gluten Free Flour Power’.

Last, ‘Baked to Perfection’ is a recent award winning GF baking book by a woman who was a PhD student in inorganic chemistry when she wrote it. She understands a great deal about making GF baking work and explains it in an understandable way.

  • As much as I like to see elements from the Relaunch novels brought to screen, in this case I pretty much knew where the chase was leading, based on the final Voyager Full Circle novel, and that took away some the wow factor of the contact with the 10C.

  • Startide Rising is the best of them all.

    Sundiver is quite good too.

The later books were deeply marred by Brin’s giving into pressure from his editors to centre them on a group of adolescent males of diverse species because his publisher was of the view that the average scientific fiction reader was a 14 year old male. Brin has written about this and how difficult it was for him to write outside his natural quite adult style. His fantastic characters from Startide Rising are pushed into the background and only get to step forward and shine again at the very end.

  • Here’s the review from Cinemablend.

Not sure I agree that season 4 was the best. I’m in the camp that felt the pacing was off. But then I really liked seasons 1 & 3, and ran hot and cold on season 2, which pretty much makes me an outlier among Discovery fans.

  • They’ve been happily living in British Columbia all along.

If I’m recalling correctly, there was one statistic in the 1970s along the lines that there were more bald eagles living in Vancouver’s Stanley Park than in the lower 48 US states.

No effort at all to see their nests from the outdoor theatre at Malkin Bowl.

  • This one was very, very well done.

If I have a quibble it’s that it reminded me that Asian women haven’t had as strong representation in the franchise as they might. But it also made me glad that Christina Chong is in a main role in SNW.

  • Just a note that, while the listing on the Simon & Schuster website is for the US, the major ebook sellers in other countries usually offer the same or similar deals on TrekLit, updated monthly.

The best way to find out which deals are available in your country is to search ‘Star Trek’ and books/ebooks, then filter and sort by price.

In most countries, sorting lowest to highest will put all the ebook deals at the top. In some, like the UK, just set the filter to a low maxim price e.g., less than £2.99.

  • Archer being the worst captain, while being on track to becoming a founder of the Federation etc. was what made me bail on the show for a long time.

I really came to loathe Archer, and writing T’Pol as having respect for him really damaged her character over time.

  • Uhm, I don’t need the Romulan Supernova to be tied up with a bow.

But I also appreciate that writers like to be able to be the ones to bring closure to their own stories. Alex Kurtzman was the cowriter of Star Trek (2009). I can see how he would like to be the one to lay down the incontrovertible canon that ties the loose ends that the Kelvin movies and Picard have left us with. And he’s co Showrunner of Discovery so it was his vehicle to do it with.

So, I would be cool if this resolves some things and helps us to understand better the butterfly effect that destroyed a civilization, split the resilient Prime time and perhaps even give us some deeper hints on what caused the Mirror Universe to split off.

  • Or just tag one of the artists who posts on Mastodon. They’ll get the notification and can decide whether they want to respond here or not.

Vfx head Brian Tatosky did that when I that on another post.

Unfortunately, I can’t recall which of the animators have seen posting on Mastodon.

  • Clearly, the ability to be outside in appropriate clothing for activities isn’t being mandated. This is where a temperate climate enables ridiculous practices to persist.

All I can think about when I see this image is how in Ontario, the responsible provincial ministry requires all schools and ‘day nurseries’ (read day and after school care) to put the kids out in the yards twice a day unless the weather conditions are severe (Less than -20 or more than +30 Celsius.).

Parents are responsible to send their kids with suitable clothing for the cold. One rarely sees little girls in skirts in schools unless they are wearing tunic dresses over leggings.

In an earlier era, pre 1970s, when skirts were mandatory for girls, that meant switching to pants or snow pants from the skirts 3 times a day to go outside in winter (two breaks and leaving end of day).

  • Emily Coutts (Detmer) and Oyin Oladego (Owo) are never listed with the main cast characters. They and others like Patrick Kwok-Choon (Gen Rhys) are credited in the ‘also starring’ list in the post credits not in the main titles.

No reason not to believe Emily won’t be back. Oyin was in production as the lead in an independent feature last year so there may have been a scheduling issue as there was for Ronnie Rowe Jr (Bryce) when he was in production for his lead role in BET+ Series ‘The Porter’ during production of Discovery season 4.

Most of these Canadian actors filling in the bridge crew work on other Canadian projects which seem to be more crucial for advancing their careers even if working on Discovery was a regular income.

  • Brilliant thank you!

I remember seeing this. One wonders why this hasn’t been included in the BlueRays or included with the DS9 library on Paramount+.

If you’re on Mastodon, I’d recommend sharing it with the current vfx head Brian Tatosky (@virtualbri@mastodon.online).
