  • Can you easily switch drives in your system? I’ll often do that on my computer because little m.2 SSDs are so darn cheap now. It’s easier and cheaper to pick up a little 64GB drive for one off projects than it is to do a proper backup and restore.

Also, I’d just go with Tumbleweed. I don’t distro hop like I used to, but that’s because as everyone else is saying, most of the distros have gotten really good. Most of the time, my little projects are trying out specific features of a different distros. So I’ll just pop a new drive in, test drive it, then either switch back or not.

  • Also, all of us have done things because we didn’t know better. The only dumb thing to do here is to not learn how to fix this. Try and fail, so next time you know how it works and can do better.

  • Unless it was encrypted, it prob doesn’t matter. The partition table is just the road map that points to the houses (files). A tool like FTK or PhotoRec goes byte by byte to find the files and figure out what they are. You won’t have file names, but the data might still be there.

  • But I could take ‘flower.jpg’, which is an actual flower, and embed a second image, ‘csam.png’ inside it. Your scanner would scan ‘flower.jpg’, find it to be acceptable, then in turn register ‘csam.png’. Not saying that this isn’t a great start, but this is the reason that a lot of websites that allow uploads re-encode images.

  • TBH, I wouldn’t be comfortable outsourcing the scanning like that if I were running an instance. It only takes a bit of resources to know that you have done your due diligence. Hopefully this can get optimized to get time to be faster.

  • Apple is very good at price discrimination. I hey know if they can build a slightly cheaper phone by reusing the SoC from the older lightning version, and 99% of iPhone users won’t care (for whatever reason) they then know that the 1% that does care will spend a little bit more on the Pro model. And they do that with few different features, which ends up with the Pro models selling a significant number of units.

  • Okay, so I’m a government that has collected $1 billion in taxes, do I choose the solution that provides water to 1 million people or 2 million people at the same cost.

Having a price tag isn’t just a feature of capitalism, it represents effort and labor. Even if we didn’t have money, we would be deciding if we should spend our villagers’ time building the water purification system that provides water to half the village or the one that provides to the whole village.

  • I’d like to agree with most of the people here and say that while I have a great local zsh setup, 95% of the time I’m working on some other system in the cloud that only exists for a few days at a time and will only ever have bash and basic vim-enhanced, so I never really get to use my oh-my-zsh setup.

  • He doesn’t care what happens in court because unless he is sentenced before he takes office, he doesn’t even have to figure out if he can pardon himself. And in that sense, more is not better. 3 (or 4) strong cases against him on Jan 20th doesn’t matter because he can just tell his AG to keep firing people until this goes away.

He doesn’t have to win in court, he has to to win the election.
