What other ones? That's the one you can buy in the supermarket
Are you saying we shouldn't eat the entire cetacea family just because sperm whales are endangered?;
We eat minke whales which are listed as "least concern" so not really?
First one's Limbus company - "waifu" Rodion is actually a really great character (she's a self proclaimed girlboss!) And English class probably isn't quite right - you probably don't read Korean post modern poetry or Camus or a Chinese 20k page critique of Confucianism and domestic abuse in a bog standard English class. It's also set in an absolutely batshit insane uber capitalist dystopia where magic may or may not exist and you can break the laws of physics by abusing human suffering. It's a deck building thing where you get to muck around with alt timeline versions of your 12 guys (the aforementioned literary main characters) and it's pretty fun. Don't know how else to really sell it. Meursault is there? And like a corporation version of the SCP foundation?
Second game is splatoon, specifically the second one because you get a gun that's a straight up a bright yellow PN-90 in the campaign mode. There isn't much to explain, splatoon's campaign is just, kinda like that and is a shitty way to sell the game because it's uh, primarily a multiplayer game.
Does that mean you also pronounce scuba sku•ba instead of skoo•bah? Because that U stands for Underwater not OOnderwater. And what about Jpeg? Shouldn't it be Jeg because the P in photographic is silent.
although I couldn't get it to accept whale.
Seriously? I get this is a New Zealand site but like, whale is a normal meat in some places, way more normal than like fugu or something. I could go right now to the local grocery store and pick up a whale steak if I wanted to. It'd be cheaper than a normal beef steak too. Why would they blacklist a meat that's actually eaten in some places?
Anyways the best way to eat whale is to treat it like a tuna steak - little bit of oil and pepper and barely cook it on each side. Traditionally though you like turn it into stroganoff.
Quick update - it won't accept whale but it will accept hval (whale in Norwegian) so enjoy this..."Recipe"
Idk if this counts as it's not visually obvious, but Amaterasu from Ōkami is a fun female protangonist, on account of her being straight up Amaterasu Ōmikami, the sun goddess (and all around top dog) from Japanese mythology. Graceful and elegant and also she's a big ol' wolf who does doggy things, which I imagine would delight a 5 year old.
The game's artstyle is really stylised and pretty, the story is based on Japanese mythology and legends which I'd think would also interest a kid, it's kinda zelda-like with puzzles and whatnot, and there's a dedicated woof button. It came out way back in 2006 but at the same time it's been remastered pretty recently (it's in capcom's summer steam sale if you're going down that route) so you've got some choice about which route to go down trying to find it. Try and stick to European versions if you can because apparently the American localisations removed most of the mentions of the fact that Ammy is a girl which imo is a really weird choice because like, that's a whole ass mythological figure?

Are you trying to connect up to a computer? Look up "USB tethering" in your settings - you should be able to plug your phone into your computer through a USB port and share its data connection no problem. If you're only using one device, it's actually better than a mobile hotspot. You can also do it over Bluetooth if for some reason you want lower bandwidth. YMMV as I'm across the pond, but I get stats from my telecom company about my usage and it doesn't list anything USB tethered as hotspot related so I think it should go under your company's radar.
But also like, what the absolute fuck man? How? Why?
You know all those books and literary analysis you had to do in Englidh class that you hated? Yeah what if we made a game about those guys? Oh and don't worry, we got guys from all over the globe, so we're going to make you relive that pain regardless if you're from Spain or Korea. Oh you liked that part of class? Good news! We made Rodion Raskinolov an anime waifu!
Alternatively: solving a centuries long race war in the only way we know how - with 13 year olds and 90's themed warfare! It's not a child soldier if the military doesn't know about it! We swear this is deadly serious we gave the kid a FN P90
I find the best way is to establish where the main thoroughfare is, and also the old part of town. That's usually where there's shops and nice places to wander about window shopping and looking for food options. Bigger cities often have multiple versions of these things so you might need to walk around a few to get a sense of which ones are touristy and which ones are something else.
Once you sort of have your bearings, think about what this place is famous for in the sense of "when have you heard about this place in an everyday context?". Was there a famous guy who did stuff here? Did something big happen during the industrial revolution? What was the war situation like? If there's any big notable things that spring to mind, chances are there's a museum or monument or thing about it. And obviously what springs to mind is going to be different for different people. You might instantly go to some botanist who worked for the national gardens while I might think of some architect who designed a bunch of metro stations, while someone else thinks of that really well preserved tank they have. Don't go "I have to go to these places because they're famous", go "oh that's where that I thing I know is!"
Alternatively, super niche but if you still use Pokemon go/Ingress, open it up and see where portals are scattered. Generally speaking if there's a lot of portals in one area, there's something interesting there. Also idk about Pokemon go but ingress has a 'missions' mode where people make little pseudo-orientering maps where you have to run about looking for a specific location, and they're often themed.
In Australia I had the option to learn Japanese and then when I went over to Europe my school specifically had a Chinese option, both for "facilitating trade and future relations"
Ngl years later I kinda only use my Chinese skills when I'm at the Chinese market and I'm trying to find the right ingredients for something, and I reckon out of my entire class I probably benefited the most out of taking the language. It isn't the cultural trade exchange they were hoping for...but hey, it's pretty useful being able to correctly identify stuff when the English stickers they plaster on the label are vague at best and incorrect at worst
Ok but like that asshole is using his money and power to donate to horrible stuff. Even if we take the stance that you shouldn't let someone's opinion ruin what they make, you're still helping him support his causes financially through using his platform.
Or wow, it's almost like people care about that sort of thing on the platform were most people came from Reddit or twitter because of the awful actions of their respective CEOs or something
Tbh I can't believe we're at a point where "keep your cats inside they live longer and don't risk infection or injury or death" is straight up not enough to convince people to keep their pets which they love and cherish inside. Like I admit I'm biased - I'm a bird person and my main stake in this argument is the local wildlife. But at the same time...it's kinda ridiculous that people would rather risk all that than bother to entertain and interact with and exercise their cats like you would with most other pets?
Not to mention like in Europe multiple species of native small cats are being pushed out and outbred by feral and outdoor cats
Keep your moggies inside for their sake people! Also for, y'know, all the birds and small mammals killed by them and the fact that your pet can pick up some goddawful diseases from being outdoors and still have a shorter life expectancy than indoor ones
Eh even on farms they're not the most effective
Sure cats sometimes catch mice, but you know what else also catches mice and is actually native to wherever your area is? Owls.. Owls that are being chased off by said cat.
Let your local raptors do their job people.
I wanted to go local and the closest instances were either Finnish or Danish and I went Finnish because I'd rather not accidentally order ten litres of milk every time I try to say something
Also this is where the fountain pen community originally was. They've since moved to wayfarer but honestly? I kinda like it here. Small instance and it's name isn't just Lemmy.somethingrather like most places are. I do one day want to host my own instance though, so I can have the pride of adding yet another thing to my domain's umbrella.
As an outsider (and someone with this name situation), I'm morbidly curious about what happens when a kid has a name that's the opposite gender as them, either because it's a gender neutral name in their culture, or because their parents just named them like that? Because I have a sneaking suspicion they're suddenly going to be fine with 'unapproved nicknames' when their alternative is calling a boy Vyvian or a girl Terrance
You could try and find an apple that's about the same size?
You can also like, dislocate your jaw. That works. Would not recommend doing unless you can already dislocate it on command though.
What's wrong with squids :(
I'm not really an expert on this, I just know that the ingredients list on a pack of whale lists Balaenoptera acutorostrata as it's species and I've never seen any other species for sale. We've been hunting these guys for a millenia and ever since I think the mid 20th century it's the only species hunted, mainly because that's simply what's native to Norway.
As for why? Norway's been a pretty poor country for most of its existence and any reliable source of food is a welcome one, and it's not like whale's the worst thing to eat. This was never a profit thing like the more sterotypical American whaling industry, it's first and foremost a food one.
