  • Consider these two pixel-oval portals:

              xx oo
        x x o o
        x x o o
        x x o o
        x x o o
          xx oo

They are the same size, and you can easily make a bijective mapping for each of their pixels.

Rotate one two times in 3D space by 90°, and it fits through the other. If you want more wiggle room, make them taller.

  • In any case, performance is just one factor. For a FOSS project to be successful long term it needs contributions from other developers and with the massive pool of Python developers there are, hopefully I’ll be getting some help soon. Also along those lines I have deliberately chosen:

to code as simply and stupidly as possible, to make it accessible to most skill levels.
No complicated frameworks, fancy algorithms, or esoteric design patterns. Model View Controller, baby.
No frontend build process or tool chain (vanilla JS only. No npm).
Few third party dependencies, only Redis and Postgresql. Mostly.

All this makes setting up an initial development environment, finding the bit you want to change and testing it out fairly quick and easy.

Sounds very wise to make it as accessible as possible. And you basically get super maintainable code as a side product!

  • So why is this? The answers so far seem unsatisfactory, since things like phones, SUVs and car-centric infrastructure are on the rise in other countries as well, without that staggering rise in deaths.

I spent about 3 minutes browsing the report linked in the article, and am rather less confident than before. For example, on pages 25 and 26 they look at the share of SUVs in deaths and sales. And while both figures are rising, the bodycount from non-SUVs has gone up as well.

The answer is probably not a single factor anyways. Can anyone make a more or less informed guess what might explain the US being so bad?

  • Hamas never had a chance against IDF in a military clash. They try to erode international support for Israel instead, by dragging the giant into a long and dirty fight.

They also need to take care about their domestic support. In both cases, it is good for Hamas when IDF does cruel things.

So the strategic goal of continued fighting is to show everyone, abroad and at home, how evil Israel is, to stay in power.

  • I think that's one of the best use cases for AI in programming; exploring other approaches.

It's very time-consuming to play out how your codebase would look like if you had decided differently at the beginning of the project. So actually comparing different implementations is very expensive. This incentivizes people to stick to what they know works well. Maybe even more so when they have more experience, which means they really know this works very well, and they know what can go wrong otherwise.

Being able to generate code instantly helps a lot in this regard, although it still has to be checked for errors.

  • There's a very naive, but working approach: Ask it how :D

Or pretend it's a colleague, and discuss the next steps with it.

You can go further and ask it to write a specific snippet for a defined context. But as others already said, the results aren't always satisfactory. Having a conversation about the topic, on the other hand, is pretty harmless.

  • You can do that when you control the frontend UI. Then, you can set up the input field for their name, applying input validation.

But I would rather not rely on telling the user, in hopes they understand and comply. If they have ways to do it wrong, they will.

  • That wasn't clear to me. I thought this was about siloed lemmy instances, hence I talked about that.

I don't see how their comment makes sense from your perspective. Can you explain? According to that theory, where did the exploding-heads people go, joining the people who can’t handle living in a mixed society in real life? Do you mean they stopped using the internet or how does that help to explain the observation?

  • You can check wether it has something to do with "[ ] Show Read Posts", a checkbox in your settings.

It confused me once; because it counts your own posts as "Read Posts" and hides them accordingly.

At least that's what it did in the last months. Since the recent update to 0.19, I see Read Posts no matter how I toggle that setting.

  • Lemm.ee is dead

    Jump
  • when your server is a raspberry pi of some underage kid

You couldn't be further from the truth. sunaurus has been an exemplary admin, with clear communication and obvious competence. He's even contributing to the source code and helped other admins in troubling times.

Yes the situation is/was bad, but for anyone who followed the server, as an exception. Coincidentally right around the holidays.

It's fine if you rather want to move to another instance, but can you do so unlike an underage kid, slinging fabricated dirt on your way out?

  • the server performance in general seems to be a lot better than before

For me it's the opposite. All good, then I took a break around Nov/Dec, and now it's a slug for more than a week already. Pages take second_s_ to load and sometimes don't load at all.

  • The interesting part is not your personal opinion but the reasoning behind it.

I have reasons for my position and layed them out. You disagree, and showed that much. I still have my reasons and can't know yours, so your comment did not change anyones mind or advance the conversation in any way.

  • Ruud is categorically suppressing or deleting certain viewpoints or speakers? Or some other Lemmy admin is doing so? Can you give an example?

It's fairly easy to get banned on lemmygrad for having a (perceived) liberal attitude, to name the obvious example.

  • ‘people who can’t handle living in a mixed society’

That's ... both sides, all sides, isn't it? Specifically for exploding-heads, there were numerous and loud calls on multiple instances to defederate from them.
