  • It's not that they can't, it's that they don't have a need to. Enticing news, fake or otherwise, keeps people engaged, commenting, posting, starting flame wars, and they do all of it on the platform. Somebody at some point noticed that users don't mind fake news (as in they don't leave the platform as long as there is fake news posted there), and the potential 'hit' to reputation is well balanced by the boost in engagement they see.

Lemmy, on the other hand, might not have the same incentive (yet?) to keep spreading bullshit for the sake of getting firemen and arsonists locked in a neverending game.

  • It's ok, I'm sure Austria and The Netherlands will have UK's back and just veto their Schengen joining ad infinitum for no apparent reason. As for the Euro, the UK can just pull a Sweden or purposefully maintain a highly variable exchange rate so as not to fulfill the requirements for joining the Eurozone.

Alternatively, pull a Denmark and peg it to the Euro and do some voodoo with interest rates when it's in danger of changing parity outside the agreed upon limits. (Not sure if this is what pre-Brexit UK did?)

  • I mean you're not wrong. But here we are. If you've ever tried to convince anyone of... well anything that conflicts with their views, you're probably well aware that there's no changing peoples' minds.

So I guess my honest question is... what now?

  • I'd say all these articles about social media saying it's broken are just about maintaining the illusion of something better. As long as they can keep it up, people are going to think "it's bad but it shouldn't be!" and just keep coming back hoping it improves. And that can keep social media alive with everything it can do for everybody using it as an income stream.

It has never informed users and a pet peeve of mine is governments using fucking twitter to communicate. And businesses too lazy to create their own webpages (or pay somebody to do it for them) and pay for some hosting (deductible as a business expense, by the way) so they use fecebook instead.

Also, as somebody mentioned in a different comment, it is actually the town square, as it always was (I believe their comment evoked witch trials as an example).

  • Yes, as others have said, it's paracetamol with some other stuff.

Something I've not seen mentioned yet however is to please be mindful that these do contain it and try to not take additional paracetamol (say, in tablet form) without watching your dose. Paracetamol overdose leads to some very nasty effects. Be careful not to exceed the daily dose of paracetamol, as stated in the product insert.

  • may I introduce you to the very real concepts of anti-vaccine people and flat-earthers? or the people disregarding health advice during the pandemic because of some global conspiracy to kill people with masks

  • the world would be a much more terrifying place if stupid people doing 'evil' (never ascribe to malice what can be explained by stupidity) stuff were instead evil and highly intelligent. I like this version better. we like to think that intelligence brings with itself high morals and every intelligent person is an agent of good. some people might just want to watch the world burn, but that's a discussion for another thread, I think.

imagine a highly intelligent musk or spez. ugh

  • I also get adrenaline rushes and instinctively angry when loud noises that can be avoided, happen.

I have also developed (without going for it) some very good stealth skills and I am not an especially tiny person.

I also grew up with a fairly short temper, though I wonder if it's genetics or the upbringing. Learned over time I can control it, but the berserker rage is still there.
