  • Well, poor literature has always existed, which some might not even dignify to call literature. Are writers of such things threatened by LLMs? Of course they are. Every new technology has beought with it the fear of upending somebody's world. And to some extent, every new technology has indeed done just that.

Personally, and... this will probably be highly unpopular, I honestly don't care who or what created a piece of art. Is it pretty? Does it satisfy my need for just the right amount of weird, funny and disturbing to stir emotions or make me go 'heh, interesting!'? Then it really doesn't matter where it comes from. We put way too much emphasis on the pedigree of art and not on the content. Hell, one very nice short story I read was the greentext one about humans being AI and escaping from the simulation. Wonder how many would scoff at calling art something that came out of 4chan?

Maybe this is the issue? Art is thought of as a purely human endeavour (also birds do it, and that one pufferfish that draws on the seabed, but they're "dumb" animals so they don't count, right? hell, there's even a jumping spider that does some pretty rad dances). And if code in a machine can do it just as well (can it? let it - we'll be all the better for it. can't it? let it be then - no issue) then what would be the significance of being human?

  • Aye, but I'm thinking the whole notion of copyright is banking on the fact that human beings are inherently lazy and not everyone will start churning out books in the same universe or style. And if they do, it takes quite some time to get the finished product and they just get sued for it. It's easy, because there's a single target.

So there's an extra deterrent to people writing and publishing a new harry potter novel, unaffiliated with the current owner of the copyright. Invest all that time and resources just to be sued? Nah...

Issue with generating stuff with 'puters is that you invest way less time, so the same issue pops up for the copyright owner, they're just DDoS-ed on their possible attack routes. Will they really sue thousands or hundreds of thoudands of internet randos generating harry potter erotica using a LLM? Would you even know who they are? People can hide money away in Switzerland from entite governments, I'm sure there are ways to hide your identity from a book publisher.

It was never about the content, it's about the opportunities the technology provides to halt the gears of the system that works to enforce questionable laws. So they're nipping it in the bud.

  • I am not in any way defending said people for being rapists, murderers and overall just nasty fellows. I would like to point out that Russia has been known to lash out on people's loved ones to get them to fall in line, so running away may be just part of the equation. Now to what extent one's attachment to one's family forces them to do things is an interesting topic.

Could a person that rapes and murders because they got a free pass be considered capable of genuine human affection towards their loved ones? Or are they using it as a generally accepted excuse 'they were gonna harm my family if I didn't amputate this poor fella's arms in a dark dungeon!'?

That being said, there were some recorded phone conversations circulating around a bit earlier in the conflict about some of them loved ones communicating to soldiers about 'how many did you rape/kill?' and 'loot some shit and bring it home!'

Obligatory not all people are the same and such.

  • Direct democracy is still corruptible via propaganda. It's way more difficult to steal a majority of votes, but if you use some carefully crafted us vs. them narrative, you can steer the public opinion in your favour. Which begs the question then, if public opinion (in this case just a bit over half) is in your favour, has democracy not been achieved?

And if so, is direct democracy not just the current system but with extra steps?

Or are we counting on a "more locks deter opportunists, but don't prevent the ones truly bent on breaking in" in order to discourage minor acts of corruption hoping it wouldn't cascade into something bigger?

  • nah, lad, people are most likely understanding exactly what ya meant and they're downvoting because of that. also the 'pseudo-childfree' mention might also be bothersome to some, what with it suggesting said lifestyle might be just a phase and thus claiming to have the absolute truth and such things. pretty sure parents would downvote a childfree person for suggesting a pseudo-parent notion.

but I'm 2 ales and a barleywine in already, so YMMV

this thread is entertaining though, for what it's worth. I just want to see the fuckcarspeople get involved here as well, 'cause it's getting kind of repetitive

why isn't there a fuckplanes community, I wonder? I mean they still use leaded fuel and are probably making us all stupider and more violent and stuff

  • Everyone in the comments pointing out inconsistencies in the English language, but there's lots of people who speak other languages, that do very interesting things to such consonants.

Can we get some input from the likes of the Danish and the Dutch regarding how to read this?

  • I'm shocked, shocked I say that some would accuse such an organization as the WHO of being highly corrupt and political! My good sir, I shall not stand thy slander of such a useless appendage whose perceived power lies only in the fact that it's named 'the World health organization'. Why, how dare you criticize an organization that has tippytoed around the associations between covid and China for fear of losing its precious funding and the sinecures they provide?

    Good day, sir!

  • Not OP, but basically tap water, depending on where it comes from, may have more or less calcium in it. If you're used to drinking high calcium water, you might not be drinking lots of milk or eating much cheese. Shifting to purified water would remove said calcium from the diet and leave you at a slight deficit. Incorporate some other source of minerals into your diet.

Same goes for other things you would get from water like sodium (though not a concern if your diet is high enough in sodium), magnesium even if you are blessed with a source of mineral water.

The human body uses these ions in way more ways than just say... calcium for bones. Calcium is important for example for proper muscle function (including the heart muscle), as are magnesium, sodium and potassium - that's why you feel like crap when hungover - drinking too much caused you to eliminate too much water. And the kidneys cannot eliminate just pure water, they do so by using some of the aforementioned ions, and since alcohol forces elimination of water from the body, the kidneys start throwing out whatever they can to get the water out too, starting with sodium and potassium. That's why salty snacks taste so good with alcohol and bananas are recommended for hangovers.

    But I digress.

TL;DR - Keep your ions in balance, folks - RO or distilled water no longer contain sodium, calcium, potassium and other such goodies. Get them somewhere else.

  • After having one of those undersink systems, I can say they work, the water is very pure coming out, only issue being that it's basically pure water - no minerals, no anything - some issues there with actual hydration since drinking pure water can kill you - look up hyponatremia.

edit: might not be the case - see reply

The principle is the same as for the more expensive systems, what you don't get is

    • potentially an UV inline lamp to sanitize stuff
    • a pump to increase the pressure and increase efficiency/speed
    • maybe a storage tank (some cheaper models have like a 1-2 gallon storage tank)
    • not sure about this one but more expensive membranes might have a better removal rating - mine said 95% I think

If you have around 45 psi of water pressure on your tap, it's good enough, but don't expect to be bathing in the stuff, it takes quite a long time to get usable quantities and I think you get 1L RO water to 4-5 L 'waste' water. Higher pressure - higher efficiency and speed but check the pressures the membrane is rated for. Also if your water is chlorinated you need some activated charcoal pre-filters because chlorine harms the membrane.

Maintenance should also be done regularly to change prefilters once every 3 months and the membrane once every 9-12 months. And it can get slightly messy on cheaper models.

  • Well articulated. We can't absolve people of responsibility just because they are poor, unless we absolve them of all responsibity and treat them like children, and put the ones who have no caregivers in a foster care system. I'm fairly certain nobody wants that.

Yes, I am aware poverty is not something you can just wish away, but they know what they're doing. Same as the people illegally cutting down forests in Eastern Europe. They're also poor but they're also assholes. They also have a penchant for shooting people who try to stop them. Pretty sure them rhino poachers would do bad stuff to anybody getting in their way as well.

  • My bad, I have interpreted it as apologetic for the people yelling at Larian for 'ruining it' for everyone.

I agree that we should not expect this sort of quality from everything, after all Gauss' curve applies universally and this is quite far from the mean as I see it. We would just maybe like... less shite.

But it's not like Larian are the first to raise the bar. I remember the days when Blizzard was an awesome company. Then I remember Bethesda being awesome. Now it's Larian on the spotlight. I may not have followed the news back when the others were good, but I don't remember such attitudes around as mentioned in the original post, to basically discredit instead of leaving it alone.

  • So the answer is for the ones who make nice things because of a nice system they have to just stop because the other crabs can't get out of the bucket. Maybe their beef should be with their idiot boss, not with the guys who do the work.

Whatever happened to companies learning from other's successes instead of trying to keep others down?
