  • I get what your saying now but it would be possible if you made the mirrors with a focal point at 300km and it would be less effective at different lengths but it shouldnt change all that much since you would only need like a couple seconds with that kind of intensity.

  • Unfortunately I can't open the links on my phone so it's hard to follow what you're describing. I understand the rays aren't perfectly parallel but they're pretty close to parallel. Do you mind doing the math of where you are getting 3km from I'm not really following your logic. It doesn't make sense to me that the light should suddenly spread out way more after bouncing off a mirror than if it has just continued traveling straight.

  • It's not that the plastic isn't recyclable it's that you cant mix plastics and recycle them. So if there is a doubt at all what a plastic is then it's thrown away or if it can't be separated from other materials or contaminated with oil or something.

  • Light doesn't have to spread wider than a target or else you wouldn't be able to have telescopes or magnifine glasses. Each panel in unison can act like a giant magnifine glass. The difference in power density would be the ratio of the distance of sun to earth squared vs (sun to earth + earth to satellite) squared which is basically negligible. Where do you get the 3km wide beam? Suns rays are almost parallel.

  • No that's not true only about 30% of light energy scatters when traveling through the atmosphere to earth and certain wavelengths are almost completely absorbed in the way down. So on the way back up it should be a high portion make it to the satellite I would imagine 80%. Even worse case scenario 200 megawats shinning on a satellite would vaporize it almost instantly.

  • It depends how the actual system was set up if they used flat reflectors then yeah it applies but the difference in power would be the ratio of the distance from earth to the sun vs the distance of E to S +mirror to satellite which would be negligible. If you had a parabolic mirror you could get no loss in power. The power density square law only apply because the area the light is being distributed over is growing at a square ratio to radius but if the beams are parallel the area doesn't grow.

  • The power density square law is for an emitting light source that emits in all directions. Since the incoming light is basically parallel that doesn't really apply. If you were able to accurately track a satellite (a feat I'm sure is pretty hard) you would definitely vaporize it pretty quickly I'm talking under a minute since space is a good insulator.

  • The one thing is would you end up with your soul mate again and even if you did it wouldn't be the same relationship you had back then. I thought about this and have 3 kids and don't know if I would want to give up on my kids because there's no way I could say goodbye to my kids and never see them again.

  • I think you're unfamiliar with California's new policy it doesn't change the cost to install but how much you pay and make for electricity. Basically now you sell electricity to the grid for 3-5 cents and buy it for like 10-15 but then they tack on like 20 cents in transmission fees. So it has made solar not cost effective anymore in most residential cases. So the total number of yearly installs has decreased to 20% compared to last year. But my point was a radical government can do plenty of stuff to sabotage progress in order to keep themselves and friends in power.

  • Still plenty that can be done to stop it. Preventing transmission lines, giving even bigger subsidies to fossil fuels, putting large tarrifs on imported solar panels and wind turbines. Just look at California the power monopoly is in with Gavin Newsom and they created rules that protect their profits above all else and now solar installs is at 20% what it was before.

  • It says in that article the group that got sent to Martha's vineyard are making claims of human trafficking. I find it hard to believe the people put on these buses aren't coerced or lied to. I think there are many reasons people would want to move to NYC instead of bordertown Texas but I don't see Texan politicians caring to filter out ones who do and don't want to go and simply rounding a group up and getting them on a bus.

  • I don't think you understand the business models of those food delivery apps. I used to own a restaurant and talked with many other restaurant owners at the time all those apps take 25-30% Uber was 30 the less known ones were 25%. This is outside of whatever the customer paid for the delivery. You also weren't allowed to change the prices for delivery to compensate. So it does affect the pizza hut.

  • What pizza hut has 5 full time drivers? There's only 1200 people affected by this and 560 locations so a little more than 2 per location. Now let's look at the cost those delivery apps charge 30%. So if 35% of sales are deliveries now theyre paying Uber ~110k to deliver their pizzas. 28$/hr is high closer to 23-25$/hr for overhead. That's roughly what the delivery drivers would have cost and now they're getting way shittier delivery service and people are much less likely to buy pizza from them. Sounds like a dumb move.
