Israel's Failure to Stop the Hamas Attack Shows the Danger of Too Much Surveillance

Bro Im not trying to add to a chorus of people who're gonna tell you not to have your hobby. I adore everything about sailboats, that being said, the only way I've seen anyone stay on top of the things is by living in it, which maybe you should consider. Mooring costs aren't as high as rent payments are, at least, not yet. Fuck if my wife would agree, that's exactly what I'd do in a heartbeat. Then I'd get the boat ready over a year or two and sail down to Patagonia and try to win over an adventurous penguin.
In a heartbeat.
And props on not carrying debt. Debt is just slavery with more steps. Jesus lost his shit one time in the bible. He even forgave his killers. But the fucking money lenders, the bankers, he fucked their shit up. Based Jesus. If he were around today, after a couple months he'd put down the internet porn, look around and say 'i fucking told you guys 2000 years ago, for fucks sake'.
To be clear, you can have any hobby you want my man, that's cool. You do you. I'm not taking umbrage due to your taste or aesthetics. The part that offends is your condescending attitude towards other peoples spending, while you do one of the most expensive "hobbies" there are. If the contrast isn't striking to you or you think you've earned some next level respect, having risen above the mere mortals and all, well then you just come off quite Antoinette, and as a quick reminder, that's not a good look either.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that's what this is or putting you on blast, I'm just saying it's bringing these vibes to me and putting that on the table. You do with it what you will. If there's something I can tell ya that's universal across cultures, it's lend a hand to help, bring people up with you, and attack up, not down, especially with jokes, opinions and attitudes.
Otherwise you're just a kiss ass for people with more money/power than you. And idk man, some people are comfortable licking boots and kneeling, I don't get it but it is what it is, it's just not something I can quantifying into a price. The rest of us just have to cope, I guess, with owning our dignity, integrity and spines. For some people everything is for sale.
Fiberglass ain't cheap either brother. You need to fix a water tank? Just looking at fiberglass makes your wallet lighter $500, and costs rise exponentially.
Problem with your inverter? Batteries? Generator? 3k a piece, and that's if you're shopping around.
Don't get me wrong, I live off-grid and after doing it for a few years we decided a while back that if it's not rated marine we just aren't interested in it. Everything rusts. Every bullshit thing in the market is designed to fail after 200 cycles, just past the 180day warranty. But marine ratings are actually enforced. So everything we own has steadily become aluminum or stainless steel. Redoing finishes and waterproofing, oiling. Protecting shit from the weather is almost a full time job.
And then the canvas. And the rigging. And the ropes. Rope is without question my favorite tool. I know a solid 50+ knots I can do blindfolded, upside down and behind my back hanging in a tree. Bro, I love sailing, and rigging for that matter, and I won't even do what your doing and I'm in my early 40s, childless, no debt, own two businesses, have no rent or mortgage payment - and I can't afford a boat.
Godspeed my man.
I bought a boat last year and now I want a bigger one....I don't live beyond my means....spend stupidly....
🤯🤯🤯
Homie. You just bought the largest money sink there is. You can drop 20k into your 2k boat and when you turn around and sell it you'll get your 2k back, that's it, maybe. All the amenities are nice, but no one cares if the all the outlets match the drapes - that's why buying either is stupid, financially.
Fences are another good example. They can cost tens of thousands...EASY. In fact if I heard a neighbor fenced even one side of their yard for under 5k id be in shock. They make a place more livable, more comfortable. They increase the likelihood of a sale but they don't increase property value so you're never getting a return on that money.
Be it fences, boats, outlet covers or drapes, those are all emotional purchases. Their value is subjective, so most find when it's time to move on from them theyre the only ones who see that value.
Like go spend 5k on a couch. How much you think your gonna get for that? Or your mattress?
Better live on your next boat if you like life on the water. It's literally the only way I've ever seen anyone who works for a paycheck hold onto a boat. A real boat. The kind that you have to moar and drydock once every few years. Only way.
Someone share this story with John Green
You sit in a white room empty of everything but theres a slab to sleep on. One thin as fuck scratchy wool blanket. A sink/toilet combo. Maybe a cup that tastes like plastic, if yr lucky. That's it. And the light never goes out.
You lose track of time as you have no basis besides meals (which is like a sack lunch with 2 pieces white bread dry and a piece of bologna. And a red delicious apple. I'll starve, thanks) which are by no means at a set time. You lose track of everything.
It's inhumane. It's contempably cruel. And the cruelty is the point. What little contact you get with the jailers, they make sure to to let you know they enjoy your suffering. There is no empathy inside. There is no respect. You're a piece of meat, not a citizen.
If there's a just god in any capacity, everyone who works in the prison system will burn in hell. All of them
Myself, id prefer direct democracy; once automation frees up our time, allows ubi and education and medicine get recognized as an inherent human right. Since it's all a part of our global heritage.
So post capitalism.
And only then if we've unlocked the tech tree to allow socialism. No dice if we buy the authoritarian, neo-fuedalism expansion pack. If we buy that, then fuck it, just reset the game.
I'm preeeeeetty sure they could afford direct, un molested (maybe not if Republicans are around tho) copper wire to a kill switch. Reading resistance on the receiving end would ensure the line hasn't been tampered with.
It's only like technology over 100 years old but what do I know.
I'm not lambasting you or even arguing with your first two paragraphs here. I agree with you, to be clear. I dont even see the point in chiming in on the mental disorder "collectors", it just feels exactly like boomers telling me "I ruined everything" as a millennial. genZ doing stupid shit as teenagers, let it go, they were teenagers. We got lucky that Tom was a true homie and wiped Myspace on his way out the door. Let the kids have tictok while they still know everything. They'll come to terms with reality when they have to, just like we did. I don't see the point in holding this kind of thing over their heads.
And if you feel you aren't, great. But enough people do and you're just adding to the chorus. Just be aware of the company youre keeping, all I'm saying.
In the 50s-70s kids identified with car culture. In the 80s-90s kids identified and differentiated thru music. I can't even tell you what kids do now, I'm not at an age, or profession, to be interested in that knowledge. Teens rebel. They're smart enough to start shouldering some responsibility but society keeps them from utilizing their agency. Social media gives them some of that agency back, even if it is for dumb shit like eating tidepods. Some kids HAVE to touch the stove. Some kids learn by jumping in the deep end (right here, I did that). Theyre in the process of discovery. There's always been clicks, it's part of how we figure out who and what we are.
Beyond that, going to, or worse, NEEDING (GASP!) therapy IS shamed, even if you aren't doing it.
Not just shamed for some, but detrimental, to most men's careers.
Any high stress job, surgeon, police, law, there goes your chances of advancement.
Because for some reason accepting the fact that people don't have all the necessary tools to process every situation in life is seen as some kind of failing, even tho entire fields of study are dedicated to it.
Getting therapy should be seen as nothing more than going to an expert, because you are smart enough to know you aren't. Which makes it the smarter, more rational decision. People are complicated and obtuse. And language, while pretty amazing at some stuff really falls flat for most everything internal. It takes specialization. People dedicate their lives to JUST that. That entire train of thought needs normalization, universal promotion, and access commodified, as well as made mandatory for said, and unsaid, high stress professions.
Harrison wrote all my favorite Beatles songs. I wrote em out when I was in my late teens and looked it up, every single one written by Harrison.
I don't think it's quite fair to unload on genZ about self diagnosis when access to medical care is restricted and understaffed as it is here in America. Another way to see it is at least genZ is concerned with their mental health and concerned enough about other people's that theyve set to normalizing it.
I'm sure if therapy were blanket covered by insurance than 9 out of 10 people wouldve gone by now. All those numbers are only indicative of how many people could afford, what's often considered elective, medical care.
And then how many received a diagnosis just so the doctor knew they'd get paid? $$$ in medicine fucks up all our stats, which fucks up all the conclusions we draw from them.
Blame the dead women, you mean.
Roe was passed based on privacy, which is reason enough, imo. People don't need to know other people's business and some dipshit busybody aspiring HOA presidents opinion shouldn't even be in the same conversation as a medical professionals.
Roe passed the court on privacy but Roe passed public opinion because of the many many deaths from back alley alternatives. Roe was about saving women's lives. Conservatives can bemoan the lost fetuses but losing the women is worse. The women cant go on and have other children if they're dead.
My grandmother was taught by her mother. My mother by my grandmother. My sisters were spared this dark legacy thanks to Roe.
I mentioned Roe and privacy one time around my Grandmother. Unbeknownst to me, gran used to protest and I'm supposing, burn her bra's, cuz she went red immediately and set me right. The kind of mad that made my mom admonish me even tho she didn't even hear what I said, it was just THAT tone. Grandma only got that fired up one other time- when I said McCartney was more talented than Lennon, but I'll die on that hill, sorry Gran.
If the majority of people have it, wouldn't that make it the order of things and not a disorder?
If everyone has the same affliction then that's just the norm. Better questions would be centered on what is it about society that is engendering these new social norms?
But that would take real discussions, dive into politics and economics and necessitate actual actions instead of just more NeoLiberal busybody posturing. Keep kicking that can down the road boomers, it is after all, all you've ever fucking done, besides let the country devolve into dilapidation and disrepair under your watch. Institutionalized neglect, smh
The difference was that Ronald Reagan had had skin cancer so he actually took it seriously and listened to the scientists.
Conservatives never believe anything until it effects them. Sonder is a foreign concept to them, along with empathy. Out of sight; out of mind.
I recently read a study about micro plastics that fairly well substantiates tires as their most of prolific source.
Think the media is gonna run with that? What would be seen as an attack on car culture itself, fuck the science or concerns of health effects. Micro plastics in the clouds, in the Arctic, in the placenta..
I'm not holding my breath.
I also only use Facebook thru Firefox. Marketplace to be exact, I lost interest on the social media side in 2016 and haven't scrolled down once since then.
Reddit thru Firefox spits out different front pages if it detects mobile v desktop version. I rarely go there but I can not stand the mobile ad/smut push, like it's way to obvious just BUY THIS and BOOBIES. Unusable imo. And I'm just talking about the mobile version of Firefox, I won't use their app. Fuck reddit.
An attitude they share as well. Eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.
Ya gotta leave them able to see. And then show them you have the same capacity for cruelty, but only dole it harsh to the ringleaders.
That's not a solution and you know it. I feel ya my man, I do.
You don't need sympathy for them. You don't need to forgive anyone for them - you do that shit for yourself, so you'll be free of the negativity of their weight and move forward clear of them.
Don't let them define the limits of your virtues. Don't let anyone tell you who you are (which is essentially the same thing). That's for you to tell them.
Most are probably a lost cause. Not all, for sure. Look at them like you would a wounded animal and for reasons we don't know they blame us. It's much easier to understand and anticipate, therefore mitigate the pain they're choosing to propagate. But over generations...we can teach their children tolerance. And patience. Hence their war on education (the ones showing up at PTA meetings, not the ones trying to loot the budget).
I'm one of the first to respond to fascist violence with violence. Fighting nazis is a great family tradition of mine, going back 80 years. I'm no Gandhi, MLK. I'm much more aligned with Malcolm and Hampton. I'll let the Gandhi's have the mic and lead from the ideals, but while theyre sheparding the high road, I'm defending on the low road.
I say that because if the answer is to just damn half the population, then you've got to put more effort into your answer. Or just do what I do, which is let others more eloquent elucidate. I don't need to sway anyone's opinions, hell sometimes I'm the last person who should have the mic. Knowing this is a strength, not a weakness.
What I do know is that Hate isn't the way. Every spiritual or moral teacher in history has said the same thing. But I don't need hate to fight, simply resignation to the task at hand, like putting down a wounded animal. If anything it makes me more cognizant in the moment.
While I question the intelligence of the MAGA crowd as well, I feel like I have to constantly remind people that the other half of the people who would vote for him are really voting against neoliberalism, even tho they can't describe it as such.
They'll say globalism, they might even take a swipe at wall street or corporations. NAFTA, "Elites" etc etc.
They're struggling just like everyone else due to late stage capitalism and they don't care how it ends, just that it does.
Mind you theyre also statistically white and think they'll be in the in group when our money becomes less valuable than toilet paper and weather it all fine, which is delusional.
There's the haves and the have nots. Even security for the rich, after the walls fell, will still be servants, not equals.
I say all this so those inclined can see there is actually a good amount of material we all agree on, and if you can approach it without instigating their pearl clutch reflex, some can even be brought into the light.
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
