Their govt is capitalist. Putin mostly sucks. They're also the only thing standing in the way of the total hegemony of the largest fascist empire the world has ever seen spearheaded by the U.S.
Russia, as "totalitarian" as it may be, does not ban communists from its government and in fact the communist party is very large. It does ban neo-Nazi groups as well as parties calling themselves explicitly fascist. Ukraine, on the other hand, has avowed fascists in positions of power in both the government and the military. They have recently banned all communist parties as well as all leftist parties, ranging from mere anti-war liberals to social-democrats. Anyone bringing awareness to the Nazi problem in Ukraine is summarily arrested. Zelensky himself wants to turn Ukraine into a "new Israel" with ethnic Ukrainians being in charge of an apartheid state where ethnic Russians are second class citizens and armed military police roam the streets and "guard" movie theatres, hospitals, schools, and more.
Russia is currently attempting to liberate ethnic Russians in the Donbass region from an ethnic cleansing campaign that goes back to 2014 and before. Over 14,000 ethnic Russians have had their lives taken by the Ukrainian military and many more have had their homes and livelihoods destroyed. This is the reason Crimea voluntarily voted to join the Russian federation, as did the people in the Donbass. Russia is acknowledging a democratic referendum. Ukraine is continuing its ethnic cleansing policy. It may seem complicated, but there is an obvious answer to the question of which camp is perpetuating imperialism and genocide and which one is finding itself fighting against it.
I could see a very interesting storyline where you play as a German or Japanese conscript who becomes disillusioned as you witness the horrors of fascism before your own eyes and frag your superior officers. The problem? Nothing like this has been recorded as having ever happened, not even to the scale it happened during Vietnam among Amerikan conscripts. Either German and Japanese soldiers were so proselytized into their fascistic ideologies that they were ecstatic to be taking part in atrocities, or the post-war German and Japanese governments completely destroyed records of any comparable events. The only historically accurate campaign or story based game you could play as a German or Japanese soldier is one where your player character embraces Nazi or Japanese imperialist ideology fully and completely, or you get shot in the head by your superior officers immediately for showing hesitation. There is no compelling story to be told here, as the majority of the war was not hell for these people. It was looting, raping, pillaging and loving every disgusting fucking second of it.

Related to your last paragraph, I think PCUSA is doing an absolute banger of a public service with their People's School series and the person who narrates the readings has such an incredible reading voice that the dryest shit becomes incredibly engaging. Although I know from members CPUSA is abandoning a lot of the liberalism that has defined them in the past and regrouping as more staunchly Marxist-Leninist, I still feel as if PCUSA's platform is much much better and free from electoral obsession. I wish they'd distance themselves from this patsoc garbage but they seem to be embracing it, or at least were. It's my only hang-up about the party.

Have you heard the idea that Laventiy Beria was a massive rapist and had childrens' bones dug up out of his yard posthumously? Montefiore. The idea that he was a sadistic lover of torture comes first from Khruschev, and then the sexual element comes later from Montefiore and is sort of retroactively attributed to his supposed love of torture as leader of the NKVD. Beria is also blamed for the Katyn massacre (Nazis did that) as well as "genocidal" ethnic relocations during WW2 which is a complicated topic but the major point being that Beria did not single-handedly order this.
In reality, none of this is true. Under Beria, the NKVD nearly, if not entirely eliminated torture as an information retrieval tactic because 1. it's cruel and fascistic and 2. it doesn't work. Under Beria, the former torturer Yezhov was executed for his crimes against humanity (which he perpetuated of his own sadistic volition).
I'd recommend reading Khruschev Lied by Grover Furr to learn more, he dispels a lot of the myths relating to Beria there. If you investigate these claims on your own, you'll find that the source for damn near everything either goes back to Montefiore's "anonymous sources" or straight up unsourced garbage, or Khruschev's "secret speech".
Tangential here: I don't think Beria poisoned Stalin either as seems to be a common idea among some MLs because of Beria's renown as a rapist mass murderer. I think they were quite close and that Beria was most likely a good communist and comrade. He was executed by the Khruschevite clique, likely because he remained as a vestige of the Old Guard still fiercely loyal to the legacy of Stalin and Marxism-Leninism.
