  • Agreed. My fiancee had some pregnancy complications that resulted in numerous visits to the ER, including one that then required ambulance transfer to a bigger hospital an hour away and a 2 week stay there. One of the weeks she had to share a room and I couldn't stay overnight, but I was set up with a social worker who arranged a paid for hotel room for me a couple minutes away. Overall, I ended up paying $10 for parking at the big hospital (the social worker gave me a pass after I paid the first day), and maybe $20-30 on some really good Nanaimo bars from the lobby coffee shop. The family we shared the room with was in a similar situation, but since they lived further away they were flown in by air ambulance from their hospital, also at no cost.

  • I'm sure you must know the answers already but clearly I'm replying to your comment and referring to the Liberals, the party whose leader has announced his resignation. And once again, it's pretty clear Danielle Smith is the odd one out. She refused to sign off on the first ministers letter a couple weeks ago and every single other premier has been specifically quoted as supporting a team Canada approach, even Scott Moe.

  • I bet he'll end up sprinkling in a handful of very specific exemptions. These are what we need to slap export taxes on. Doesn't need to be much, but match his 25%. At best it'll hammer them where they need it, at worst it'll keep things fair for all our exporters.

  • Yeah but it only really works if it's targeted. Threatening blanket tariffs on countries that represent 60% of all imports (EU, China, Mexico, Canada) takes a bit of the impact away, it's unlikely domestic production could handle all that. Even if it could, why wouldn't American companies raise their prices as much as they felt they now could?

  • I'm equally curious and terrified to find out where the line between "we love trump" Conservatives and "we need our own trump" Conservatives lies. Even if, purely for arguments sake, we accept that all his policies are amazing, they're amazing for a different country and actively detrimental to ours. Assuming we get stuck with PP he's going to have to make a choice. Which half of his base does he agree with? Will he stand up for our country, or roll over and hope the Yanks have their way with us gently. Unfortunately I feel he's going to fumble and fail to do either.

  • I don't think the liberal party has a good play against it, other than if our new liberal leader challenges Trump and musk to a boxing match and literally bears the shit out of them on live television

Ahh, well that's not good. Love him or hate him, I think one thing everyone could agree on about Trudeau is that he'd do pretty well in a politician boxing league.

  • As someone not from Ontario I'm pleasantly surprised with how he's handling the issue and the stances he's taking. I also have to acknowledge if I did live in Ontario and had to put up with his antics on literally any other issue I'd hate him. But from a holistic Canadian perspective I think it's good. Sorry Ontarians.

  • The point is we need alternatives that are an improvement over the status quo, not making the current options worse. In some cases it might mean making things cheaper (EVs), in other cases it might be improving the service even if the cost goes up a little (public transit). In any case no one's going to switch to a much worse or more expensive product or service for environmental reasons, it needs to be better on its own merits.

  • That's not really what I meant. Most of the similar proposed proportional systems break down the proportional "evening out" to provinces or smaller regions. Theoretically (although extremely unlikely) if the Bloq lost with 50%-1 votes in every riding they'd have about 12.5% of the overall vote with 0 seats. They'd get 50 of the 62 seats regardless of anything else that happens anywhere else in the country.
