For those who are unfamiliar, encrypted or not radio signals can still be tracked down. Normal communication is like everyone in a room speaking English and we all understand each other. Encrypted communication is like speaking in gibberish that only a few can understand. BUT everyone in the room can still hear that a person is saying something.

Triangulation is a thing. If you become a pest licenced operators (see radio fox hunting) and maybe the FCC themselves will be able to direction find you easily if you aren't careful. $7-10k is the base rate for fines for this stuff if it came to that. If you fuck around near aviation, police, fire, or other similarly important radio frequencies you will find out VERY quickly.

fun fact lora bands (the ones meshtastic uses) are mostly outside of amateur bands and have encryption enabled by default. They don't transmit very far on their own though, they need other meshtastic devices to relay messages over longer distances. Business band licences allow encrypted radios too.

Maybe if you are in a rural area you can try it with basic FRS/GMRS walkie talkies where there isn't a licencing requirement and by extension maybe a bit more leniance if you claimed you didn't know it was against the rules.

He has been at the head of a company for years. He is now in a position of overseeing and altering whole government organizations.

He knows the stakes, he knows the responsibility, he's been in the public eye for a long time. The salute was legit that is out of the question, he could have made any number of different gestures but he did that particular one twice.

Now at BEST it was "just" a senseless and reckless lapse of judgement or some batshit level trolling. But even if I gave that benefit of the doubt why would I want someone with that little self control anywhere near the level of government that he is currently playing with?

If I was calling the shots I would show him the door and pull all US Govt support for anything he touches on principal alone. Not a fan of Trump but even he hasn't pulled shit like this.

Just go for it, so long as you aren't overtly rude you'll have minimal issues (hard to do, in my experience Germans are quite polite). Few people will care at all and those that do probably won't tell you to your face which is for the best for everyone anyway.

Assuming you're going to visit as a tourist most places you will be at will be fine for both of you.

Santa Ana winds are a well known phenomenon out there but I imagine that strong is fairly rare and notable. Large fires will suck in tremendous amounts of air as the hot air rises up. Those fires are burning a massive area

The fire bombings of cities in WW2 created similar firestorms. I remember a history book describing the winds being strong enough to send bodies tumbling through the streets like leaves.

Large corporations like google have grown and thrived in Silicon Valley, supported by the politicians of California. So by extension they are partially responsible for enabling these companies to be the giants they are.

According to this article Google has funded 40 elected officials and spent $10.7 million in lobbying California's legislature and Governor this year alone.

If a president (even a shitty one) was considering putting a damper on companies like google, I would not be against that. We'll see if anything actually happens.

It generally means I'm more in the middle of the road.

I like that marijuana is becoming legalized. I also want more responsible gun ownership. I want people to enjoy gay rights and freedom of religion as they see fit. I want a smaller less bureaucratic federal govt while also keeping a capable military. I want a good economy and action to mitigate climate change. I want very poor and homeless people to be cared for without ecouraging them to do nothing about it.

Basically I have something to piss everyone off

Constructive and condecending are two different things. Some people simply love to flaunt their pros and trash our cons.

I am more centrist with mildly right leaning views, but I play dnd with people that are quite left leaning. We respect each other's perspectives and differences but otherwise get along just fine. There are divides, mainly boiling down to city vs rural but reality often isn't as polarized as the news and comments will have you believe.
