  • because their current lighting cable only transfers at USB 2.0 speeds as well

This is the main reason. People are confusing the protocol (USB 2.0/3.0) with the connector (USB C/Lightning). Apple slapping a different connector on the phone isn't changing the underlying technology inside the phone. People claiming that USB-C must mean 3.0 are just spreading FUD in order to shit on Apple again.

And, as others in this thread have pointed out, high speed transfers by cable are low priority for phone users, there are much better tools to do that, like maybe an external hard drive.

  • The only thing that affects how long it takes to brute force a password is length and entropy (the different types of characters used). Passphrase is designed to make it easier for a human to remember, so if you are using a PM to remember it anyway, a 64 character random password is going to be better than a 64 character passphrase.

I usually use the password generator in the 32 character range with all of the symbols, numbers, and characters included, since it seems like a lot of places don't like longer passwords.

  • I can also vouch for VLC to somewhat work, but it is pretty flaky and might need some finesse to work very well.

My experience has been to just rip all the titles using MakeMKV and load the extras into Jellyfin into a /Extras directory. That way I can watch the special features, but I lose the DVD menus, which can sometimes be a good thing with forced previews and FBI warnings and whatnot.

  • This seems like a no brainer idea for being able to order in a store and get it delivered home. I just hope they don’t end up having no stock in the retail stores and force all orders to be delivered.

I personally will just order online if I want it delivered or if what I want isn’t in stock at retail. I only go in if it is for something that I can pick up right now.

  • I like to use a soda stream. I can add co2 to my own water and add whatever I want to use to flavor it. Sometimes I just use a few drops of lime juice, sometimes I use bourbon.

I also like it unflavored. Sometimes all I want is the bubbles.

  • Be careful buying drive you intend to shuck for a NAS. It is hard to tell if they are SMR or not, and if they are the NAS will throw errors from time to time. I would say if you already have the drives go ahead and try it out, but if you are buying new, get some that are designed for a NAS.

  • It was pretty easy to set up. There was a time machine setting somewhere that makes it so the Mac will just see it as a viable backup location.

Having everyone’s TM on the NAS would make it easy to set up some sort of offsite mirror as well.

I just googled Synology Time Machine setup or something and there were a ton of guides.

  • I use a Synology DS920+ And have been very happy with it. I have time machine running for several MacBooks. I also use it as a Jellyfin server.

The Synology setup is easy and it is smooth to add new drives. Just remember to add the smallest drives first. If you have two 4 tb drives setup, don’t buy a 2tb drive to add more space, but going up to an 8 is no problem.
