  • We're just arguing semantics just to argue at this point.

I can say how the paragraph says the majority of Fediverse platforms operate on ActivityPub and how ATProto is not within that majority at the moment.

Or I can say yes Diaspora is the only one that matches the original definition, but what is the definition now?

But a much better conversation is why we're trying to fracture our conversations around decentralized social media? The data is open and can be bridged. At that point are both protocols the Fediverse? Why are we digging ourselves into a whole here on the Activitypub side and refusing to discuss how we can further the Fediverse and decentralization?

  • Posted in another comment but wikipedia disagrees.

The Fediverse (commonly shortened to fedi)[4][5][6] is a collection of social networking services that can communicate with each other (formally known as federation) using a common protocol.

We can argue semantics all day but at the end of the day I'll hold the same stance that we shouldn't be fracturing the communities and instead discussing the content and idea of a decentralized communicating social media landscape.

  • The literal first line of Wikipedia agrees with me?

The Fediverse (commonly shortened to fedi)[4][5][6] is a collection of social networking services that can communicate with each other (formally known as federation) using a common protocol.

  • Instead of being a patronizing ass, how about let's have some discussion about

The ultimate goal of this subreddit is a fully decentralized social media landscape.

And how ATProto is not accomplishing this / what they can be doing differently than what's outlined in their blog post

    Or a counter argument to

Fracturing discussion between ActivityPub and ATProto helps no one, especially in niche communities like this.

  • The idea of the Fediverse is simply a group of social networks communicating through the same protocol, is that not what ATProto is attempting to accomplish?

I've been a long time supporter that ATProto actually is apart of the Fediverse. The ultimate goal of this subreddit is a fully decentralized social media landscape. Fracturing discussion between ActivityPub and ATProto helps no one, especially in niche communities like this. The long-term goal is the same, and whether that progression happens on protocol A or platform B it's progressive nonetheless and we should discuss it.

  • I know this convo was 2 weeks ago, but they published a great article that includes how Identify is handled that answers our questions.

    https://atproto.com/articles/atproto-ethos

Effectively identify is as the PDS level. So if Bluesky goes down and your account were through Bluesky you'd lose your identity ?*

If your account is held through another platform like Spark or your own self hosted PDS your identity would remain live.

*My question that sparked from this is if Bluesky went down and you're already logged into a second platform, when you log into that second platform does it duplicate your DID? I'm assuming not and you'd still lose it because logins are through OIDC and the keys still exist on Bluesky.

Regardless the true path to decentralization should be everyone hosting their own identity on their own PDS w/ identity but that might be a longshot. The path to decentralization is effectively allowed but will people take advantage of it?

  • There was no progress because the filibuster.

When it's Democrats in control this is the excuse.

When it's Republicans in control they do as they please illegal or not.

Why do you think this is? Republicans have already burned through 80% of Project 2025 without a filibuster being started, why are they able to accomplish so many of their goals, the Democrats however almost none.

Their AIPAC and Insurance provider paychecks come with stipulations.

You say you're empathetic towards Gaza yet you're rooting for a politician who's accepted 3/4 million dollars directly from Israel.

  • Billionaires, US politics is largely fanfare with niche outliers like Bernie. There's a reason the US has largely been the exact same imperialist state feeding the billionaires for almost 50 years now. Democrats had 100% control of Senate, House, and Executive branch in 2022 and what did they do to prevent what is unfolding today?

Largely fanfare with a focus on imperialist foreign affairs in Gaza.

Anyone who's been paying attention to the news for more than 3 administrations can tell you this is the reality of our system and nothing will change until it crashes and is rebuilt.

  • There's 10-20 other Dem senators there helping him by taking questions, giving speeches and allowing him to get bathroom breaks.

And they're doing the bare minimum. They should've been on rotational shifts from one week in, and this especially should've been going on when they signed away all their power with the budget approvals a few weeks ago.

I promise I am not attacking you personally, let's just not mistake this as the Democratic party fighting, this is one man fighting an uphill battle with the bare level of help.
