  • The counter to this are the strongly patriarchal countries around the world having the exact same problems as the western world. Cost of living problems are a population growth problem, that humanity has done an amazingly shit job of dealing with.

Consider that there hasn't been a shortage of food for humans on Earth for over 500 years. And yet, starvation and famine have very much been a thing. Not because there wasn't food, but because the food that existed was restricted to some populations, usually intentionally. Resource restriction is just another tool for authoritarians. From companies taking away health care, to trade embargoes, to wiping out the buffalo. Starving your opponent has always been a viable strategy.

Stopping a system from starving you of resources has always been a problem too. That's why it works.

  • Every phone has a radio with remote root access controlled by a security key that is supposedly only in the hands of the manufacturer. A manufacturer that could be forced to give up that key, and forced not to tell anyone they had done so.

At least with a PC you can control the physical access to transmission, giving you a way to possibly audit before send, and physically control all input.

The reality is that any large scale communication network will be breached by the controlling government, or it will be shut down. If you want actually secure communication, you have to do it by broadcasting in the clear using an unbreakable cypher that's been physically passed on.

  • The canal is on a crash course with climate change. They're going to need absolutely massive investment to operate once the lake dries up, and they're not pulling in massive profits to pay for that. If Trump wants lower fees, he best be ready to pay for them. The reality though is that he's probably just betting on failure.

  • Not my kinda show, but I'd just take a sub to mgm for a month if I really liked the show. Otherwise it's a trip to the torrent farm. Honestly I really have to want to see a show for it to be worth dealing with the bay. There's just way too much for free, or already on a cheap stream, to keep me distracted.

  • I haven't been able to watch broadcast TV in decades. The commercials were making me physically ill. Too much flash flash between them with sudden volume changes.

As for news, it's easier and faster to read, plus I can deep dive on anything interesting. For everything else, there's streaming or piracy.

  • It's always interesting to watch moments like this in history. There are thousands and thousands of them. Small bits of violence, happening at random, but really the same thing over and over. Most of the populace just ignoring it. Until one particular case, no different than any of the others, catches the attention of the masses. And suddenly the world changes in drastic, sometimes horrible, ways over night.
