  • To start with, it would be good if EU, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand banned visits/residence for russian citizens until russia leaves all occupied territories, hands over all war criminals and provides financial compensation for all damage.

With a explicit notice that they are welcome to play the victim and talk about alleged "russophobia"; this is not going to work.

Realistically, a change in attitudes would require other measures, but this would be a start.

  • That's not true. The beginning of the invasion of Ukraine started with the annexation of Crimea in 2014. This was supported by 84% of the population (consistent across 7 years of polling 2014 to 2021). Even with list experiments to account for preference falsification, the support number largely stays the same at 80%.

And support for the full scale invasion was at 65% in 2022 even with preference falsification adjustments.

And then there is the matter of the russian population: 1. electing a KGB goon in 2000 (considered largely free and fair) 2. Reelecting the KGB goon after he shut down mass market independent media (also free and fair) 3. Supporting the comical Medvedev seat warming plan in 2008 4. Electing putin as leader for life in 2012.

Don't get me wrong, I agree you that Western support has been very weak (if funding is an issue, there was 550 billion in russian assets) and failed to effectively challenge russia.

  • It's not just putin though, it is at the very least a strong majority of russian population who are supporters of genocidal imperialism.

And this holds true across every demographic segement (age, income, rural vs. urban, education).

  • Funny how Francis doesn't hold the same level of humanitarian concern when it comes to the actions of the russians (not only in Ukraine, but also in multiple African countries, Syria, Georgia).

He was actually caught prasing russian imperialism.

  • I generally prefer 80s/90s anime, but there is some really good stuff from the 2000s as well (haven't really watched anything from last 10 years).

Michiko to Hatchin (2008) Ergo Proxy (2006) Texhnolyze (2003) Kaiba (2008) The Sky Crawlers (2008) Ghost in the Shell: Innocence (2004) Blame! (2003) Howl's Moving Castle (2004) Paranoia Agent (2004) Planetes (2004) Samurai Champloo (2004)

Not saying you have to like all of them (these are my favourites after all), but there is good stuff from the 2000s.

  • You still get people who think anime is "cartoons", but they tend to be older.

I feel like around ~20 years ago is when anime started entering the mainstream.

  • “There’s never been a more exciting time to be an anime fan, and we are strategically feeding a pipeline of anime content and experiences that fuels that fandom, deepens the love of anime, and exposes more audiences to the medium,” the company said. “The Crunchyroll business is outperforming our financial expectations, and the company is well positioned to continue to grow alongside the rising global demand for anime.”

We live in interesting times. ~20 years ago I would have never imagined such a statement.

  • "Fascism, that's not a word that regular people, you know, use, you know?" Fetterman said

    A fascinating perspective.

  • It basically relies on this false stereotype that since Israel is a Jewish state, and Jewish people are inherently manipulative or deceitful, Israel must not be telling the truth.

This almost supremacist rhetoric. With the implication being that the Israeli government due to its superiority over others is inherently incapable of being manipulative or deceitful and any claims to the contrary are anti-antisemitism.

One could interpret this as a racist take.

  • To be fair I was replying to a thread that said LW/ML are equal and something about fascism in LW.

I just don't think they are as problematic as you imply. Are there issues? Sure (I be have my own complaints), but generally those communities seem somewhat usable.

  • I don't really see it. A lot of the posts in that community don't even explicitly state what community is being discussed.

Some of the stuff is legitimate, some of the stuff feels more like bitching.

I don't really understand how you can claim LW is the worst considering that on ML you get instance banned for opposing the russian invasion of Ukraine or having a critical attitude towards China.

  • This guy has just, out in the open, bought himself into a position of power. This is the type of shit you see in a movie. Next thing you know, he’ll be scowling at a local detective reminding him of his diplomatic immunity.

Is it really something you only see in a movie (even in the context of the US). This is being reported because Musk's diva persona, but I would speculate a lot of US oligarchs have previously had massive influence on government processes and some even got themselves into positions of power ala Musk.

  • This is a bullshit article:

Biden has erroneously viewed the war as a conflict over territory, believing Ukraine’s leverage depends on pushing Russian lines back. But for Russia, this war is primarily about defusing the threat posed by the United States and NATO. Putin cannot secure Russia against the 32-member NATO alliance or new U.S. missile technology by winning the war in Ukraine.

Anatol Lieven is a known russian shill. This war was never about NATO or threat from the US. It is a genocidal imperialist war.

Ukraine was neutral on a legal level before the beginning of the russian invasion in 2014. Russia already had a border with NATo by that point and now Finland has also joined NATO.

What Liiven is basically saying is that it is OK for russians to invade independent countries, exterminate Ukrianian identity and send 10 of thousands of people to torture camps in the occupied territories.

I hope one day Lieven and his family end up in a russian torture camp.

  • With the US civil rights movement it's worth considering the international context too. The cold war was was it's early phase of intensity and it was difficult for US to compete in terms of soft power with formal discrimination laws. The world was undergoing intense decolonisation during that period.

That being said, I don't support a defeatist view of the viability of protest. But you do need clear goals and a sufficiently large core group of people willing to take risks.

  • I am not from the US, so I might be out of league here, but haven't recent US protest movements been somewhat ineffectual?

In a global context, successful protests movements tend to take active measures; blockading of transport and key commercial zones, organisation on a level that makes security forces ask themselves uncomfortable questions.

To be fair, such movements also tend to have very strange support (be it broad based or high approval amongst a very large minority).

It is not my intention to be defeatist or overly critical, just some thoughts. I could be wrong.

  • Will need to try this. Grabbing the thumbnail via an external site is annoying.

  • I initially read Elmo as Elon Musk, I was confused why you hate Musk specifically as someone who's kid used to be a toddler.
