  • You can buy a quad core hp t620 thinclient for that. Make sure you search for quad core because they did come in Dual core variants.

Pros: upgradeable, cheaper, standard architecture, comes with everything you need including a power supply, available with a PCI-E slot (Those models are more expensive though)

Cons: bigger than an rpi, no gpio (does have serial port and you can buy USB gpio things), probably uses more power than pi.

For 99% of use cases this is what most people need and not an sbc.

  • Well yes and no, since we have USPS (for now). I sell quite a bit online and the prices for anything below a certain size and weight are below UPS and FEDEX prices. With the caveat that the the backend hauling for USPS is generally contacted out to various companies including XPO and UPS.

Anything above the size and weight of a package will get shipped freight through any manner of independent carriers that take jobs from a dispatcher.

  • Getting a domain name is very easy, I used namecheap. I decided to go with a cloud server as I don't have a good Internet connection at home.

I went with digital ocean and fired up an Ubuntu Lts "droplet" what they call a container.

I logged in and created a sudo user and disabled ssh for root for security reasons and ran updates.

I then followed the instructions for the Ansible installation. This took me some time to figure out what to do because I've never done anything like this before.

It's much easier if you have a Linux computer, I have a Linux partition on my windows laptop.

You do all of the instructions on your machine, fill out the configs with the domain name, etc. On your machine, then run the Ansible config and it will ssh into the server and install Lemmy for you.

Then you go back to namecheap and point your domain at the up address for your server.

Once that's connected you can go to your web address and set up your admin account.

I ran into issues along the way and nuked the install once just to start fresh.

The issue with email has to do with digital ocean not allowing emails, so you have to configure a third party mail forwarder. I have done this, but I cannot get it working with Lemmy, I can send test emails from the servers command line, so I'm not sure what to do. I got some help from the Lemmy matrix instance, but still nothing yet.

  • One could say that conservatives can be very passionate about their political beliefs. If you're listening to a podcast about technology, or any other topic for that matter, you might find it off-putting for the host to interject with their irrelevant beliefs. Obviously there are times when politics can be topical to the conversation. That usually revolves around legal cases and policy making.

  • The Homelab show. Hosted by the owner of Lawrence Systems Canadian managed services firm along with another guy who I can't remember. Very cool podcast for people who like to tinker with servers at home, or in the cloud.

  • To me "power mod" means someone that uses their moderator/admin powers to bully users. I've been banned from FB groups for citing city ordinances and for pointing out that a post was made by a scammer.

The legal advice mod gave me a vulgar and derogatory flare because I argued that the smell of marijuana coming from your neighbors house is a nuisance.

If a moderator has the ability to shape the narrative on a platform and uses their powers to harass people, they are a "power mod"

  • Unless you pissed off an entire nation state I wouldn't worry about signal as long as you encrypt your device and use a password to unlock. Although I believe that some police in the u.s. have some kind of black box for unlocking phones. In that case, I guess you break off your USB port and rely on wireless charging. Even then, they could send the phone to someone to disassemble and pull an image from the device image and try to get in that way.
