  • I made no argument for a test. I answered your direct question as to how it could be done fairly.

Reading and comprehension is prerequisite to a good faith response. You skipped half a post then needed to be told twice to read it. It's not my responsibility to coddle you into good faith. I delivered content well within your capacity to understand.

I accept no responsibility for your error. The input was far better than what you usually receive. You just wanted to fight with someone and I was next in line. You're a public figure. We all know your MO.

  • Why would I involuntarily defend a position I do not hold because some idiot can't be bothered to use the reading comprehension and social skills I know they have?

please do explain how asking you how this test would be automated and objective is a straw man

Because I don't believe in a test. I've told you twice. But, you're uncharacteristically being a jackass, now even after you've slept on it.

I'll make it about you because you're a valuable member of the community whom I respect, and who's seemingly not meeting their own standards of behavior (based on the past). If you don't like it, block. I'm pretty close.

  • California's western slopes of the Sierra Nevada is full of elitist, entitled neoliberals. There's another decent concentration of them around Mt. St. Helens.

While I've found pockets of all sorts of cultures all over the US, this is a special brand of asshole seemingly found only on the west (wet) side of the Sierra Nevada.

    (topical break)

You're coming across so passionate it becomes aggressive. I'm not faulting you as I think such a presentation is valuable (and do the same myself sometimes). I just want you to know.

  • How many more communities will burn before our government starts taking real proactive action against climate change-driven disasters?

The corporations causing climate change don't pay for mitigation and recovery from the consequences of their actions. The politicians forming government are owned by the corporations. Communities burning isn't motivation for change.

  • A modern commercial aircraft is one of the most complex machines humans have ever built, second only to a spacecraft. The average middle class American calls a plumber because their toilet internals broke.

Boeing is the only competitor with Airbus. The average middle class American doesn't understand the capitalist concepts, let alone the corruption of them they now suffer.

This team, a small part of Boieing, put humans in space, approaching what was perhaps humanity's greatest achievement so far. They had one issue. And, rather than cover it up and risk, especially now when such would be incredibly valuable, they communicated honestly, worked the problem, and will almost certainly bring this crew home safely.

As an engineer by education and computer scientist by trade, fuck all of you mindlessly crapping on this endeavor and their handling of it. What they've done is technically and ethically incredible.

  • High light condition with short depth of field means a large aperture and fast shutter speed was used. The fast shutter speed was used to avoid motion blur. However, the focal point is in front of the podium, the whole picture out of focus.

A modern professional camera can use shutter speeds as fast as 1/8000th to 1/32000th of a second. The AR-15 has a muzzle velocity of 3000-3300fps. The length of the visible trail is heavily dependant upon relative humidity.

If you want something fucked, it's that the focal point is in front of the podium. The camera almost always does that, not the photographer. AutoFocus is a touch or half push on the button that takes the photo on a full push. Some security agency probably modified the photo to prevent internet sleuthing and ensure they'd control of the narrative.

Note that this is only application of basics. It's not a nuanced or expert perspective.

  • It's a pop culture reference.

The system is ridiculously complex. But, input and output is easily predicted. When you point out complexity but don't explain the relevance, you've harmed the community discourse to feed your ego.

  • Give that test to everyone. It's just basic reading comprehension with a simple logic question and a simple math question. Even just that would disenfranchise the vast majority of American voters.

My point wasn't that a test is a good thing. It's an incredibly horrible idea.

My point is that the vast majority of Americans know less of their history than their immigrants. And, the vast majority of Americans are now in favor of repeating one mistake or the other because they don't know their history.

My evidence is that my suggestion above is predominantly upvoted.

  • In order to vote, I think American voters should have to pass the same history test that immigrants need to in order to gain citizenship.

edit: This sits at +11 because Americans don't know their history. We already did it to African Americans and it went extremely poorly. That's the point: Pick up a book.

  • My first job in high school I asked what my title was. I was a mail clerk.

The owner of the company, as a joke, had business cards printed up for me that read: Deputy to the Assistant Vice President of Mailroom Operations.

I felt kinda special until he also printed some for his dog and started handing them out to any visitor that pet him.
