  • an $150

    a $1500

How do you pronounce these? An 'undred and fifty? I'm honestly curious, because I can't feel like an fits on either. I wasn't going to care enough to ask but then you put a on one thousand five hundred.

  • It's amazing how effects that were so convincing can become so obvious and dated.

  • Personally I prefer when people keep their fucking inside, rather than outside where I might have to accidentally see it.

  • Or if there were 45 services, but they all basically had everything, rather than all of them having basically nothing

  • But you're not translating, you say it yourself - you're very deliberately trying to replace in order to make yourself comfortable, not because the text actually needs any adjusting.

What I said myself is that it's not about comfort. I am translating, just like you might have to translate a poem by Robert Burns. I live closer (culturally and temporally) to Malcolm X than most anyone today to Robert Burns, and the amount that needs to change for a translation is smaller too.

I agree, if it was about it making me uncomfortable it wouldn't be reasonable to make the change. But it's not. Please do not put words into my mouth, especially after I have explicitly told you they are not true.

  • It's because the word doesn't mean the same thing it meant when he said it.

It was difficult for me to fully parse, not so much that it made me uncomfortable.

I tried a number of words as replacements, but none made as much sense as the word slave, at least in my lexicon. Clearly there would be no issue changing the word in a translation, so why not in this case? I'm not suggesting we remove the original, merely that it can be presented in different ways for different audiences.

  • Whatever kind of energy was kept in mind as a unit was developed, all units of energy "are a measure" of the same thing: energy. And also work because that's actually just energy. They're just different sized units like cm vs inches or °F vs °C.

A fathom was designed to measure how deep water is, but nothing is stopping me from saying that a football field is 50 fathoms long. A calorie was designed to measure heat, but nothing stops me from saying it takes about 5 calories of work to compress a bike spring.

The reason we have the SI is that once you understand how all the different units for one quantity interact, and how they're related to the units for another quantity, we may as well just make them interact simply and stick to one unit for each quantity to reduce confusion.

  • smoking is often statistically associated with substance abuse and bad health - which increases the likelihood of major trauma events, but on the other hand smokers die earlier, leaving more old people to walk in front of vehicles due to reduced cognitive abilities)

So what about if we control for age? Are old smokers more or less likely to get hit by a bus than old non-smokers?

    Quick, someone do an RCT.

  • I've never survived being hit by a bus, and I don't smoke. Checkmate, atheists.

  • Also you're more likely to be milling around outside

  • Ohhhh, now I get it! I thought that meant it would make my cupboard colder.

  • Perhaps it depends on the audience. It was quite difficult for me to read before I mentally made the replacement, and I don't think I would have gotten nearly as much from it without.

  • I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
    The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
    My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

  • Even "clear" things cast shadows. If you can see it, it's because some of the light is bouncing off and reaching your eyes, so at least that much light won't make it to the page

  • Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime

Well look at you mr VP of sales

  • But, like, why is that listed then? Why would Kia and Nissan say they collect information on your "sex life" and "sexual activity" respectively of they're not? What's to gain from keeping the window open if you're using it?

  • Obviously the main source of heat is what enters through the windows, and how much is reflected out again does have an influence.,

A lot of things seem obvious but turn out not to be, or not as much as I've first thought. Hence the usefulness of data and studies rather than mere reasoning.
