  • I'd love to see enforcement that leads to demerit points. But you need a revenue stream to pay for officers on the ground, and nobody wants to pay more in taxes to compensate.

Either we use the revenue to fund traffic cops, or we set fines high enough (but proportional to income or net worth) in order for it to be self-sufficient.

We're far too lenient on drivers that can't drive safely.

  • I mean I think its fine if people "know" the places they have to slow down for the cameras

What that does is cause people to slow down where the cameras are, then speed up where they aren't.

If drivers assume that cameras are everywhere, watching and waiting to ticket them, maybe they'll just go the posted speed limit.

  • The idea of speed cameras is to get drivers to slow down.

It's one strategy that works for some people. Speed bumps work for others. Narrow streets work for others. And so on.

It's also one of the least expensive ways to deter speeding, recoup the costs of infrastructure, and enforce the law.

To have 30k tickets after their install shows that they're not doing the job of getting people to slow down.

They just installed them! It's not like the same people are getting 100 tickets. At least, I hope not. If they are, mandatory retest should be required to drive again.

  • All I know know is that I only needed to get one speeding ticket for me to never speed again.

And that was in a speed trap, not because I wanted to be an ass on the road. An 80km/h country road suddenly turned to 50km/h without a warning, and I was already slowing down...

That was over 20 years ago, but I digress.

If people are constantly getting tickets, they should have mandatory driving school and a retest. But still ticket them so their habit can pay for better infrastructure in the meantime 🤑

  • council is due to receive a report from staff on ways the city can create more effective signage about the presence of cameras.

    Are you fucking kidding me?

It's like pointing out to thieves where all the cameras in a bank are.

The speed limit sign is the only information drivers need. If they are going faster, it's a ticket.

These automated speed cameras seem to be working exactly as intended. The 32,000 speeders can go fuck right off.

  • Thank you for sharing. It's painful to realize in hindsight that those websites were peak internet.

They lack polish, but they were all a labour of love. No enshittification, no selling things, no corporate influence, no shit posting.

Everything had a purpose, every post took effort, and it was all about sharing experiences or knowledge.

    I really miss that internet.

    EDIT: correcting gibberish 🤭

  • As a disabled person to qualify for the new disability benefit you must also qualify for the disability tax credit. Which has specific parameters to meet. If you are not severely disabled and have permanent issues with bodily functions or do not require supports you do not qualify. Period.

Yup, the DTC needs some changes. And disabled people shouldn't have to suffer if their doctor is lazy or unwilling to sign the application.

For the number of disability groups who advocate for more funds, progress is going at a snail's pace.

But to be honest, if we had a conservative federal government, we'd have disability supports taken away, not added to. We must keep fighting.

  • The newly created Canada Disability Benefit is a start, which is in addition to other benefits.

But as the article points out, the "gotcha!" with these benefits is that it pays out based on income, rather than your gross income (after medical expenses).

More work is always needed when it comes to supporting the disabled, so I'm optimistic that we can move in the right direction with only a minority government.

  • The iZEV program offered up to $5,000 off the cost of a new electric vehicle.

No. Gift each family with two ebikes or a cargo bike and lets get people out of their damn cars.

Incentivizing large vehicles will only burden taxpayers in the long term.

  • A from HHS on Tuesday said the hotline will “focus on serving all help seekers” and “no longer silo LGB+ youth services.” Notably, the statement omitted the markers referring to transgender and queer individuals.

Can't even acknowledge their existence? Nazis scum.

  • UK for instance has places with delivery twice a day

WTF?? What mail do you guys get that you need it delivered twice a day????

I might get something "important" (i.e. from the government) maybe a few times a month. Bills are nearly all electronic. A few packages are delivered by Canada Post, but none are urgent enough to need even a daily delivery service.

Of course, I'm only speaking for myself. Maybe there are people who still get a ton of mail, but I can't imagine it's the majority.

  • I'd have no problem if urban mail took a week, while resources were used to make sure that rural service was more timely. But I also don't know how much is spent on rural delivery vs. urban mail. I have a friend who works for Canada Post, maybe I should ask. LOL

  • Reduce mail to 3 days a week.

TBH, if it avoids privatization and saves money, I'd be happy getting mail even once a week. Nothing we get by mail is so urgent that a few extra days will destroy lives.

In cases where something is needed urgently, there's courier, express mail, etc. as premium options. Regular "snail mail" isn't meant to be fast.
