  • At what point would the effort and expense be "too much"? LOL These parts are normally available for under $10 for the seal, bearing, clips, and metal post.

On the other hand, we have a shower faucet knob where this internal piece would always crack. We replaced that part many times with the official component, but I ended up 3d printing it, and it hasn't broken once in at least the last 6 years!

  • Why not give the NDP a try?

Because the people they listen to tell them that if they lean left they are "gay" or "beta" or whatever other bullshit ego-destroying insults they project onto these young minds.

If young voters are worried about jobs, housing, healthcare, education, or crime, they need to stop "flocking" to Conservatives, and learn about how their provincial and municipal governments work.

And when they realize that Conservative leaders at the provincial and municipal levels of government are the ones directly affecting their lives, perhaps they will have an "ah ha" moment and vote for anyone but the Conservatives in the next election.

  • To be honest, I've 3d printed parts for other things before, but I don't think it would work here. Great idea, though!

This is a high-heat part that needs to be some kind of silicone/rubber. The seal itself is shaped (not just a round washer), but there are other metal parts that appear to have broken/deteriorated. I don't actually think my seals are broken, but the "seal kits" you usually find have all the parts I'd want to replace.

  • Don't even get me started with vacuums! We have a Shark vacuum that was gifted to us. It works great, and I have no complaints... except for this one thing:

The hose had split one day, and having looked at a few videos on how to fix this common problem, I got to work.

Shark, with their engineers, made it so that the hose has a wire running through it, making it impossible to fix this very simple problem.

I call up their service, because the machine was still under warranty. They wanted me to VIDEO CALL showing the issue with the hose, then claimed that the hose was a consumable item and not covered under warranty! Like, WTF?? I argued with them, and they finally agreed to replace the hose with shipping at my expense.

    Infuriating.

I do remember older vacuums being way more serviceable. My only real complaint about older vacs is that they tend to use disposable bags, which I hate (another consumable!). But when it comes time to replace this, I will be shopping around for the most repairable models.

  • Is this really your experience with +16 years old? If so, you should get your province to invest more in education.

That's the problem, though. Young males voters are swaying heavily to right-wing parties, and it's thought that this is because of the online influence of bad actors.

Of course, any age can be manipulated, but far fewer are being swayed by these “influencers” as age increases.

And a lack of education ties in with voting Conservative, so there's no incentive for the Cons to change this. They benefit from young, naive, undereducated voters.

They(16yo) can drive, they can enlist.

I'm against that, too. Young drivers are notoriously bad at driving, and have poor judgment on the road.

In most provinces, they are choosing their career, trade, university, and with fresh knowledge of history and geopolitics they get from schools.

Yes, of course. It's a transition age.

Many countries already allowed 16 years old people to vote, for more than 20 years, and they did not become a misogynist hell-hole.

Other countries may not (at least, not now) have a problem with social media influencing their young voters. So, it may "work" for them, but not for North Americans.

I'm not trying to throw this age group under the bus. It's THEIR future that we vote for, and they really should be playing a role in shaping that future.

But I'd want them to be making an informed vote, without the voice of right-wing extremists in their heads. At this present time, I don't think that could happen, because these influencers run unchecked, and it DOES impact how our youth think and act.

  • Yeah, I've been far more conscious of whether the stuff I buy can be easily repaired or not, and it often makes or breaks my purchase decision.

I wish consumers had more resources into what parts might break on which product, so they can actively make better purchasing decisions.

Had I known this part could be treated like a consumable, I may have spent more on a better model that supports easier repairs.

Which reminds me, my expensive blender has a jar with a built-in blade. Eventually, the blade will need to be replaced (actually, it's the bearings), but since you can't disassemble it, you have to purchase an entirely new jar with the blade! So, I sourced out compatible jars that have removable blades that can be more easily serviced!

  • This is actually part of planned obsolescence, where it is difficult and costly to repair things even when parts are available by constant minor cosmetic tweaks dueing production.

For sure! We need stronger laws that prevent this. Lump it into some environmental protection mandate, and expedite it!

  • lower the voting age to 16

I don't agree with this, mostly because that age range is perhaps the most influenced by social media and "misogynist male influencers".

They are too young to know better at that age, and to throw away their future because Joe Rogan or Andrew "The Rapist" Tate manipulated them is just not what this country needs.

But an overhaul of our election system is needed, and laws need to be made that protect people from the barrage of misinformation we are seeing more of every day.

  • If we don't do something about social media, disinformation, and voting reform, we will not have a Canada to protect after the next election.

It will be difficult to impossible to hold onto a country that nearly half the population would freely give away without a fight.

  • It’s a bit alarming to see more Canadian Cons didn’t reject him however,

Beyond just a little alarming. Over 40% of the population basically said "We don't want Canada to survive the next four years" with their vote.

Everyone was in disbelief when people voted for Trump the first time. Then the second time. And look at what's happened there. A total collapse of their country.

Ironically, PP is the man of "no confidence" when it came to Trudeau. Yet, PP lost a 30%+ lead. Talk about no confidence! They should be kicking him out.

but after 3 liberal terms it gets harder and harder.

This is frustrating to hear, because I know this type of thinking can affect voting.

The reality is, if anyone is suffering during their day-to-day life, they need to squarely blame their Provincial and Municipal governments.

We keep voting for conservatives who impact our daily lives, but blame the federal government. Education is key to inform future voters of how each level of government affects them.

  • I installed bluefin on my wife's laptop, and on a spare laptop, just yesterday 🤭 It really is great.

I think I'll be putting it on my desktop PC and keep Aurora on my daily driver Laptop.

Either way, we're all winning 😂

  • It's still indexing, but seems to be working as I expect. I really only want it for the contextual search, but it's nice to know that I can do more with it if/when I move away from the Synology ecosystem. 🫣

  • Just for clarity, I followed the links they wanted me to follow.

The sketchy tone and vagueness while they "do stuff" after getting your email seem to have no connection to self-hosting at all.

If my intention was not to self-host, they lost me before I could even trust them enough to provide an email address 😟
