  • I definitely learned that working with a law firm once. I could have set them up something more secure with an open source stack but what they really wanted was a company to blame if things weren’t as secure as I promised.

I imagine that’s why a lot of governments and big companies pick a big corporate vendor when it’d be cheaper and better to hire people. There’s less liability if you can blame a vendor than a specialist in the event something goes haywire.

  • I’m going to give a sincere answer.

Usually AWS (or Vercel and Mongo Atlas if it’s a Node/MongoDB situation or an early dev situation). I forget all the brand names the other cloud providers use and have to do a search for “EC2 equivalent Azure” or whatever. You can’t be an expert in everything, after all. Plus, Azure has admin pages where I have to use Chromium instead of Firefox and it’s like, “Come on, assholes.” I don’t mind Google Cloud but it’s rarely cheaper and I can’t justify it to someone paying me.

I know Amazon is evil. I cancelled my Washington Post subscription — I lived in DC so I kept it longer than most would — because Jeff Bezos is a fucking menace. But you kind of have to pick one or keep a chart on your desk with all the different brand names and what equals what.

  • Just use open source. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. I’m a full stack developer and I’ve never given Microsoft a dime.

Well, truth be told, my gaming PC came with Windows and I did buy Flight Simulator but I felt dirty after and some of the silly airplane peripherals weren’t working right with Fedora so I kept it dual boot. That was before Steam Deck and Proton, though, so I should probably test it all again.

  • As a Louisiana resident disgusted with what’s happening I make a solemn promise to the people of Greenland and Canada: when it gets below 40°F (4°C, 277K, 500° Rankine, etc.), I will just lay down and die before I fight someone. I was in Montreal in February once and I would have surrendered immediately had someone said the POW camp has mittens.

  • Egg prices aren’t high solely because of bird flu. They’re high because of regional monopolies and a price fixing cartel. The largest egg producers are seeing record profits.

I hope it’s clear that I’m not saying bird flu doesn’t exist or affect prices. I’m not much of a conspiracy theorist. But if I had to guess, I’d say it’s 10% bird flu and 90% companies raising prices in unison because they can blame bird flu. If it were just bird flu, the companies would be losing money.

NB: it feels very weird to call them “egg producers” because hens are the actual egg producers. Egg distributors, maybe? In any case, the distributors are doing fine and their only competition in most regions are small, organic farms whose eggs were already $7 a dozen. It’s just the low end of the market that’s gone crazy.

  • Edit: Jesus washed her feet because they both were fantastic at cuddling and they were in a healthy platonic relationship where boundaries were clearly expressed and respected. It was sweet.

  • Yeah. I’m not a realist by any means — if anything, I’m a constructivist and I think we can do better — but power exists. It may make me vomit in my own mouth and want to become a realist and sock someone but we can do better.

It’s like that Jesus guy said: washing hoes feet will get you to Heaven. (I don’t think he said those exact words but you know Mary Magdalene’s feet were clean and smelling fresh. Anointed with fragrances and oils and everything. Jesus loved feet.)

  • I might be the poster child for medicinal use. I never really enjoyed getting high and I’ve gone to many Dead and Company and Widespread shows. So, I’m not an amateur or in favor of restricting drugs but I normally just say “No thanks.” when I’m the rotation. Most strains make me itchy or tired and antisocial. Everyone’s brain chemistry is different. For me, I either had fun or (more often) just felt miserable.

When I developed an anxiety disorder, I tried everything else. And some pharmaceutical pills do work but it takes like 30 minutes for a pill to work. But I found a strain and dose that works in 2 or 3 minutes. I’m not saying everyone will have the same experience but it should be legal everywhere. People who don’t even smoke recreationally testify that it’s got fewer negative side effects and helps. If it were a novel drug, it’d easily get FDA clearance.

  • A lot has gone backwards since then but at least cannabis is legal in most places (even if only medicinally). I have a prescription and being able to know the strain and dose is actually really important.

I just have random anxiety attacks and a small-to-medium dose of Granddaddy Purp works better than any traditional medicine I’ve tried. Benzos just make me sleep. I can at least function with the right dose and strain and I can be certain about it buying from a dispensary. And my case is minor. It’s way more important for people with stomach cancer or whatever who have no appetite. The right dose and strain makes them hungry and happy. I don’t think there’s an equivalent pharmaceutical. Every state/country should make medicinal marijuana legal. Otherwise, people buy it off a dealer and can’t measure the dose or know the strain.

  • I know it’s not being covered by the media but there’s frequent protests in state capitals, Republicans have stopped having town halls because of the hostility, every Congressperson’s phone line says “this mailbox is full” because so many people are calling, and several Tesla showrooms have been vandalized.

There’s not an organized “March on Washington” type thing because the country spans a continent. It’s an expensive 5 hour flight from Los Angeles to DC and that’s if you fly direct. By contrast, it’s a 3 or 4 hour train ride from Marseille to Paris and it costs like 1/5 the price of an LAX to DCA direct flight.

We all wish Chuck Schumer wasn’t a pathetic bozo but the American people are doing what we can with the tools we have.

  • There’s been hundreds of protests. The national media isn’t covering them but there have been protests in every state capital and major city. Republicans have stopped doing town halls. France is the size of Texas and Paris is a few hours (by train) from Marseille. Los Angeles is like a 6 hour flight from DC. It’s a lot harder to have one big protest here than in geographically smaller countries.

  • I went to summer camp and high school with Theo Von Kurnatowski and he’s a good dude. I took Art III with him and he wrote poetry. He’s probably the same person in private now but all the incentives in the “talk radio” podcast industry are to be the next Joe Rogan.
