  • I wonder what the results would look like if, when courts rejected district maps, and there was no acceptable map created, they instead mandated that there would be no districts and the top N candidates statewide would go to Congress.

  • Honestly, yeah. From what I've heard about Congressional offices, they basically just count the number of people expressing an opinion for/against a particular issue, and report that to the congressperson. Mail, calls, voicemail, emails, everything.

  • I have never known RPM of a drive to affect its noise level. The fan(s) will be far more significant in noise level. Most drives run pretty quietly, though some can get noisy during I/O, like my HGST Ultrastar He6 drives.

Also, without knowing the model, I wouldn't say they're not made to run 24/7. But even on desktop drives, it's rarely run time that kills them, it's start-stop cycles. Everything will be fine, but one day you'll shut it down and some drives won't spin up. That's why power outages can be deadly to an old server.

  • I can read and write modern cursive just fine (well, mostly), but I often have trouble with historic documents. It's not really that helpful in deciphering the handwriting of someone who learned their cursive over a hundred years ago.

  • Right. The only times I've heard of people being called back and tried after long periods of time is when they were senior officers.

Pretty sure they can still downgrade your discharge characterization for being a piece of shit later on, even if you were junior enlisted. But they probably don't care unless you do something like this guy.

  • The interrobang is purportedly for indicating sarcasm, though I and other people generally only use it as a silly "?!" ligature.

Personally, I still believe that if satire can't be detected, either it's shitty satire, or your audience is too dense to understand it even if they recognized it.

  • Yes, but those limits were very low.

Before reddit changed the karma algorithm so that it's easier to gain karma, I was a member of /r/centuryandahalfclub, for people with at least 150,000 combined karma. It was mostly pictures of animal penises.

  • Some people care more about having fancy tools than actually doing work with them.

On reddit, I used to subscribe to the VS Code subreddit. A lot of posts were just about themes, people asking "what theme is this" or posting their latest minor recolor. Meanwhile, I'm there for posts about actually using the damn thing.

  • Because otherwise they couldn't justify their continued work on things nobody asked for.

Also, those letter combinations are called ligatures, and are generally a bad idea in monospace fonts. The point of them is to make it very clear where one character ends and the next one begins.
