  • Ugh that's terrible about the experience with the audio driver, and unfortunately I have to agree... there ARE some really elitist linux communities out there. My last bad experience was on Digg, I was trying to ask a question about changing the resolution on the console from the grub config. The admin of the group was so hung up on insisting that I couldn't have a "real" server because I had a monitor connected to it, that he wouldn't even let anyone else try to answer the question (and it's actually a simple setting). He actually deleted the post because he was so disgusted by the idea that my rack of servers has a kvm switch attached.

The communities here on lemmy have been so much better with helping people out. Yeah there is definitely still hardware out there that is impossible (or nearly so) to get to work under linux, but those are usually the "software" devices (like the 56k modems we saw just before broadband become widespread). I've also run across issues trying to get a soft keyboard to pop up on a 2-in-1 Dell laptop (where you can flip the keyboard to the back and use it like a tablet), but I didn't really poke at that for long. On the other hand I've run into similar issues on Windows over the years, trying to reinstall it on a machine and discovering even the manufacturer no longer has the drivers for the hardware they sold, so I don't feel like linux is unique in this problem.

As far as fixing problems goes... Have you ever had Windows break so badly that you had to burn an install disk, boot up to a command prompt, and perform a series of cryptic commands trying to get the system up and running again? I've had to deal with that both from viruses and from Windows breaking itself. Meanwhile linux has such tools built in from the boot menu, and yeah the commands are still cryptic to most people, but at least you don't have to visit pirate bay from another machine to get back online.

  • Linux on the desktop has a long way to go

What do you perceive is missing? I've been using Linux exclusively since 2006 (while supporting Windows users at work), there's never been a time when I felt like I was missing a particular Windows feature. Mostly I just find Windows' lack of user-friendliness to be extremely maddening.

  • Since we know Musk has probably spent the weekend making a personal copy of all the data he now has access to, one has to wonder... Do these kids know anything about security? Is anyone trying to identify the copied servers and checking for vulnerabilities? It would put quite a damper on Musk's plans to "save" the economy if he starts out $6 trillion in debt.

  • Huh I'm surprised that an LA newspaper would cater to Trump, but it was the first article I found that seemed to have a lot of information (or maybe they've changed the page since I linked it?). Here's another article which is currently very negative of the situation... https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/31/us/trump-water-california-central-valley.html

So basically, dams were opened up spilling water on the other side of a mountain away from the fires. There are no pipes connecting these reservoirs to LA to fight the fires. Even if you wanted to collect the water with fire-fighting airplanes, you would have done that in the reservoir, you can't scoop it up from a river. Basically he drained all the water out into the ground to affect this Summer's crops, there is no other logical explanation.

  • Oh I'm not doubting that all of this isn't orchestrated. The plan is transparent and obvious to all but his lapdog supporters. My only question is who is pulling the strings? Is it Trump himself, or the people behind him?

There was some discussion last year before the election on the Project2025 group on reddit. Perhaps a conspiracy theory, but the idea was that Trump would come out with all these really terrible policies to really push people to their breaking point. And at that time Vance would come along and say oh yeah that's bad, I'm relieving Trump as being unfit for office, and sure, we'll just have to look into these policies. It gives -them- a scapegoat, then they go back to business as usual but more behind-the-scenes. By that point they will have taken over most, if not all of the government. The theory at the time was this would all take about 6 months. The way things are going, I don't think it will take that long before "plan B" goes into effect. We'll see what actually happens, but at this point it's not outside the realm of possibility.

  • I'm really not sure... The way he rants about things, I feel like he's dumb as a rock. On the other hand, the people who have gotten in close to him? It's not hard to figure out that for someone with Trump's ego, all it takes are a few careful suggestions, something to make him think people will admire him, and he'll be happy to do the rest.

  • Feel free to look up Terminus Dam at Lake Kaweah and Schafer Dam at Lake Success. Both runoff rivers flow AWAY from Los Angeles and basically drain into other lakes or into the soil (at least as far as I can tell from the maps). There was no plan to capture any of this water, and Trump is demanding the release of water from several more dams shortly.

So not only has he wasted water which won't be used to help fight the fires (and wouldn't have been of any use anyway), but he has greatly depleted the reservoirs used to grow crops this coming Summer. He's not trying to fight fires, he's just depleting the food that the US will have available this year.

Trump -- too dumb to know that water doesn't flow uphill.

  • Trump also fired the heads of the TSA and all members of the Aviation Security Advisory Committee the day after taking office. This is exactly what we can expect under Trump's claim that he would "restore excellence and safety" in the FAA, and everything else he touches. He claims to be cutting out DEI but all he really cares about is getting rid of the best people for their jobs and replacing them with loyal lapdogs.

  • Let me know when we have some real AI to evaluate rather than products labeled as a marketing ploy. Anyone remember when everything had to be called "3D" because it was cool? I missed my chance to get 3D stereo cables.
