In fiscal year 2022, only 290 of 71,954 defendants in federal criminal cases – about 0.4% – went to trial and were acquitted, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of the latest available statistics from the federal judiciary. Another 1,379 went to trial and were found guilty (1.9%).
The overwhelming majority of defendants in federal criminal cases that year did not go to trial at all. About nine-in-ten (89.5%) pleaded guilty, while another 8.2% had their case dismissed at some point in the judicial process, according to the data from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.
Hey bud, just letting you know that life in general gets a lot easier when alcohol isn't poisoning your mind and body. I got stuck real bad for, sheesh, 7 years because I would feel crappy, drink to feel less crappy, then feel even more crappy the next day, repeat.
Recently I had breakfast with my partner, and brought up that it had really been a problem lately, and they took it to heart and have been keeping me accountable. After about a week I had a six pack and some liquor on Saturday as usual and Sunday just felt like a total waste of a day, I felt awful. I think you lose that perspective over time of how much better being sober is when you have been daily drinking for so long.
Of course I won't pretend I have everything figured out and it has been hard not having that method of self-education, but what really kicked my butt into gear was talking about it to somebody I cared about, and getting that first week of sobriety for perspective of how much better I could be feeling. I wish you the best, I know it's not easy.
This was a big reason I quit. I would spend the next day exhausted and irritable. Occasionally I get the urge again but I just remind myself how crappy I'll feel tomorrow.
Perhaps "feasible" wasn't the word I was looking for so much as "realistic." It's going to be an uphill battle convincing profit-based companies to produce a cheap, green alternative but I'd love to be proven wrong. Short of fascism I do think government nudging of the market through grants etc is something we sorely need to get moving on, because money is the only thing that speaks to these giant faceless corporations.
Imagine being that guy, telling people the same thing scientists have been saying for 100+ years and watching all of them put their hands over their mouths like it's an earth shattering discovery. If only someone had told them repeatedly over the course of multiple generations!
Scientists: The average temperature across the world is rapidly approaching the point of no return on the planet becoming uninhabitable and we have no feasible way to avoid it.
Thank you for sharing this, I had no idea the Glass Cliff was a thing but now I'll be looking for it in the future. I remember the same thing happening on Reddit with Ellen Pao.
I think this is a reasonable take. There should be a shared burden proportional to each country's GDP. Although other countries have been delivering aid and while America is significantly outpacing the pack, they are also outpacing every other country on GDP. I'll be honest, I can't be bothered to crunch the math on how proportional this is, but if any countries are sitting things out and letting America do the heavy lifting, they should be handed the tithe dish with a pointed stare. We're all on this planet together, and I don't want to share a planet that lets these kind of atrocities happen.
Only if you're one of the lucky outliers.
