  • Because we've all seen how fraudulent people can be right?

This is minor, but take a video game for example - even with nothing to gain, lots of systems have to be put in place because people go out of their way to game the systems and cheat.

Why would something with actual consequences be any different? Why wouldn't you have even the simplest system in the way of that?

  • There's still the open version of fact checking: community notes

What are the facts about this? That it doesn't happen...that often?

There's no real time enforcement for it to mean anything. The votes are tallied in real time, and a winner is announced, then months to years later people (who are caught) are prosecuted?

Can someone point out why mail in voting with no ID is a good thing? I'm genuinely curious

  • The comments from when that happened a few years ago? Is that was you're referring to?

Because I'm referring to most of the commenters in this thread having a big 'ol hate circ jerk.

In my head, being on the left used to mean compassion and tolerance, but it's clearly the same spitefulness as the right. I'm beginning it think this is just how tribalism in general works, doesn't matter what team you're on

  • Yeah I have one set up - it's sorta meh.

Most ads from things you look at can be stopped by just an ad blocker plugin for the browser (uBlock Origin). The Pi can't stop ads when they come directly from the sever of the company you're viewing (like from YouTube or Facebook ads).

The Pi just has a library of known advertising domains and doesn't let those past the router, but because the major corps like YouTube don't use 3rd party domains, the Pi won't stop it.

For the TV scenario here id recommend just installing a new Linux based OS on it as this would be just as good as the streaming device, but free.

  • Yeah, it's not any different than ICE vehicles, people here just love being on the Elon hate train. If it's related to anything he touches, you'll mostly only see negative comments be upvoted. Me saying this tends to set some off too so

BRING THE DOWNVOTES, I DRINK YOUR TEARS

  • Haha yeah I've seen the same. A lot of things I see people saying today all feel like part of the Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit song where shes singing

when logic, and proportion have fallen sloppy dead, and the white knights are talking backwards <- And the red queens off with her head

Just remember what the dormouse said

  • Are they all bastards though?

You don't think there's any of them out there trying to actually help?

If you think it's all about getting power and bullying others, then I'd say you're showing us what human dynamics you think have the highest value. Like a form of projection.

There are genuine people that actually do want to help that work in these fields.

Would you want to keep showing up to the worst day of peoples lives and see how you can help? Like the constant shootings, stabbings, car crashes, or domestic violence for example.

If it was all about power, there's way more lucrative industries that require half the effort.

I have no idea what this dude's background is like specifically, maybe he is a bag of shit, but it's unfair to lump every individual person into black and white categories

  • I get the sense you're a bit biased here lol. If you think any of these politicians at the top give a shit about you, you're wrong.

Trump is just selfish (like most big politicians). You can't have no vision and a vision for how to destroy mankind at the same time.

It's a bit illogical to say you hate insurrectionists and people trying to alter society for their own benefit, and also say "id rather have Hitler as a president".

Do you see the irony here?

  • Where and how do you draw the line between opinion and misinformation? And who is the arbiter of truth?

Most issues that are controversial are social/political issues. Like Palestine vs Israel - other than "people are dying on both side" what can we say that wouldn't be a subjective view?

Many things that are subjective, can be spun to be viewed objectively as well. The media is good at appearing like this.

Sometimes even scientific issues arise in the form of skewed/incomplete data pushed by corporations to give their product the go ahead or to make a point, rather than objectively study. See the sugar or tobacco industries as an example. Even "the food pyramid" that was pushed on us all as kids was a lie from skewed studies.

This is sort of the consequence of free speech, one that we currently don't have a solution for. Personally, I'd rather see "misinformation" than have anything censored. This at least gives you the power to infer what you want, and decide who the good and bad actors are
