They federate with everyone, including the insufferable right wingers, the insufferable tankies, and the people who draw loli (I think there's only one lemmy instance still active that allows loli and it's the radqueer one, and it's tiny enough you don't notice it unless you go looking for it). Most of the insufferable right wingers have also closed their respective instances.

If their mastodon instance is any comparison, it still federate with everyone including the instances that post loli. I suspect if an instance were posting stuff illegal in the US that would be grounds for SDF to defederate for legal reasons, but 1A protections are broader than speech protections in most of the rest of the world.

You can always block the community or even the entire instance of anyone you don't want to see.

Or one with the broadest possible federation like lemmy.sdf.org, though they are US based if that's a problem for you.

SDF does not defederate. The blocklist is empty. And it's small enough and chill enough that it's unlikely to get blocked by other instances much.

I've never had that problem. Not on my instance's web page or using Sync on my phone.

Every generation produces small patches of varying quality (mutations) and for most organisms the source is freely distributed to create new builds (reproduction). I mean if no one is downloading your genetic repo that's largely a you problem (natural selection) not a biology problem.

The great part about federation is that there isn't a central control, and so they can in fact have their own instances, and either your instance can block their instance or you as a user can block their instance and you never have to see them or deal with them.

When it comes to controversial subs, the general rule is if you have really dedicated mods who are super careful to never break a rule themselves you can generally keep it up.

Those mods not breaking any rules individually is important because otherwise the admins will invoke their backup plan for dealing with a sub they don't like but isn't breaking any rules - keeping the mods under a microscope and looking for any excuse to ban them and immediately ban the sub for being unmoderated, refuse to give it to new mods, and ban any replacement sub for recreating a banned sub.

They could just ban the sub because they don't like it, but that kind of seeming capriciousness tends to get a bad reaction from the userbase, which is why they look for an excuse to justify the ban.

That gets tricky. The core argument would be that Trump's speech before the attack is firmly within his 1A rights (and it almost certainly is, 1A speech rights are extremely broad and anything short of a direct call to immediate lawless action is usually protected) and that his not doing anything to stop it once it started is him doing a shit job, but not technically illegal (but hypothetically impeachable, if both houses would agree to it which was never going to happen).

You'd have to have proof beyond a reasonable doubt that he planned for J6 to happen the way it did in a fashion that is definitely not attached to his duties as president in any even vaguely reasonable way to have anything to hang on him at all without an impeachment. Something like hard evidence of him coordinating specifically the attack on the capitol (as opposed to the rally or march to the capitol steps) with the people entering the capitol or their leadership and not merely an otherwise legal protest/rally. Which is a high bar to reach.
