  • That makes sense, and I think it literally just is the Deustchian model at least according to this source. It's been a long time since I read the original paper so I guess I misremembered it as a slightly different thing, though further reading suggests this might be a flawed explanation of his own theory, so I'm just thoroughly confused now haha.

I can think of a number of problems with how it would work, depending on the way you set it up it could result in something like "wormholes" to the future just randomly opening up constantly and everywhere just due to the way probability works. There are certainly a lot of interesting mathematical phenomena that arise from time travel like that.

  • What you described to me sounds exactly like what I'm referring to, so I'm not sure tbh. I'm referring to the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.

  • Travelling to the future is so easy that you can't not do it

  • Multiverse theory doesn't really allow jumping like that though, each term in the wave function is independent and that's kinda the point.

At best a time machine can just allow for further splitting of those terms, but that doesn't actually mean anything special because we can do that without time travel by just measuring particle spins.

  • The only saving grace of GR based time travel is that we don't actually know if the weak energy condition is physical. It probably is, but technically it could be a false assumption.

  • From a quantum perspective the Deutschian and similar models are honestly pretty compelling. They essentially require matching up the past and present in a consistent way that can remove paradoxes.

These make the most sense because it's entirely possible to write down spacetimes that contain "closed time like curves" (CTCs) ie. paths connecting past and present and you can then just let physics play out on these models (or more commonly using black box quantum circuits). The only consistent way to do it is to make sure the past and future side of such curves agree. It's not my area at all, just something colleagues of mine did, but from memory there are nice approaches using the path integral formalism that work really nicely in these scenarios.

All that's to say that I don't think time travel leads to anything changing, the past will have always agreed with whatever time travel happens in the future.

Having worked very briefly with the spacetimes that produce CTCs, I don't expect we'll be able to time travel because they usually violate the weak energy condition.

  • Leaving the instance or blocking someone isn't transphobic, but not respecting their pronouns is. It's that simple.

  • Oh boy...

I accidentally left my bokashi bin cooking for almost an entire year and it ended up infested with flies. When I popped the lid to get rid of it I was simultaneously horrified at the infestation and fascinated by how much everything had broken down. It was basically a brown ooze, the only remaining things I could recognise were some pistachio shells

  • He deserves a refund for that voice changer...

  • Honestly most of this album, but Bicycle Spokes in particular.

    Great movie btw

  • Aside from Them jumping the gun, causing an unwarranted dog piling on a well loved mod of a small community that was essentially a safe space for some, resulting in that user leaving Lemmy and the community completely dying, I have read at least one article of Theirs that called people who did not volunteer for war murderers, or something to that effect, I just remember it being an excessively nasty and unnuanced take.

In another article They also advocated for being generally unlikeable, which had some good points but ultimately goes against everything I think is good about being a leftist.

I recall that in general conversation They were often argumentative and quick to anger too, not someone I ever wanted to interact with, though frankly my memory on that aspect is shaky at best.

  • Holy shit this thread has become a prime example of why we love you so much Ada, I've literally never seen a safer place on the internet before and I'm including my own community I run outside of lemmy.

Endlessly defending trans people and banning all those who refuse to accept basic rules, it's incredible although disturbing seeing how many transphobes have come out of the woodwork.

  • I know Coskii meant it as a counter example, but time dependant pronouns kinda kicks ass ngl

I agree it would be hard as hell to use and I'd probably default to some shortcut too tbh, but it's a cool concept.

  • It doesn't really matter what you think about the person, the point is to take their word for it. If making people accept neopronouns is trolling then it's not a bad thing and I am personally not upset by it. If that did somehow "discredit" me I would argue that it only reflects badly on those who think my acceptance of it is bad, they are using it as a weak excuse to attack me.

Using they may be considered misgendering if you know that that person doesn't also go by they, neo-pronouns or otherwise.

  • I don't wanna because "it's a pain". Yep, you're not an ally, you're just being transphobic because that's easier for you.

Being an ally takes effort. We have to unlearn these things in order to make the world better, if the rest of us can do it then so can you. You have been programmed by a patriarchal society to resist change for a reason.

  • Neopronouns are valid as hell and all these people who refuse to acknowledge that fact are by definition transphobic.

You cannot claim to support trans people while declaring a subgroup to be invalid because you think they're not doing it the right way. You are not an ally unless you support all trans people, people who use neopronouns are not the problem, you are.

Policing trans people makes you a transphobe.

  • You cannot claim to respect someone if you can't recognise the simple reality of their gender and it's expression. Assuming people using neopronouns are making it the centre of attention is just you being transphobic and a dick, be better.

You can't demand I change my language for you

You're admitting that you prefer being transphobic over putting in the minimum amount of effort

  • Just to be a contrarian: BRING BACK THE APES

  • I'd been thinking about this for a bit today, I used to own it but I see it pretty differently now.

I kinda realised that I'd basically done all my growing up over the last 4 or so years. That wasn't my past, I was in someone else's life and I didn't know how to play that character. I didn't grow or change or do anything interesting, I just coasted to some destination I was meant to reach to finish a story I wasn't meant to be part of.

Now, I'm living my life instead, making my own decisions, liking the person I've become and telling my own story. The only downside is that I started with 20 years of baggage that I've gotta slowly get rid of.
