  • "What could Bernie be doing differently, that would actually be effective?"

Unfortunately it's not about Bernie doing something differently. The incremental changes cannot only be made at the ballot box or with candidates. It has to be made within the population at large.

Social movements through collective organizing can bring change. Unfortunately the capitalist state knows this as well and that's why any attempts to organize are stamped out quickly through violence, media campaigns to discredit, or various other means.

  • I'm glad to see some actual numbers. I am curious how quickly that is changing. I was a social worker for ten years until the last few months, and I would help people find housing all the time. It feels like there used to be more "mom and pop" landlords when I first started compared to now. Now I see this corporate players for the majority of rental listings.

  • It sounds like you have a few devices, so I would recommend trying out this testing distro with MauiShell. There is a testing iso under the heading "Downloads and Sources" in this most recent blog post about its development progress.

  • When I did some research on hardware keys I was between Yubikey and Nitrokey. I ended up going with Yubikey because KeepassXC supported it.

Something to keep in mind is purchasing a backup key. I bought one for my wife and we use each other's as a backup.

For KeepassXC it does not support registering multiple keys (at least not that I have figured out), so I have a copy of my database where it uses my wife's key as a backup.

  • I can certainly see that in regards to the movie. I think I read somewhere too that the character "Switch" would switch genders from the real world into the Matrix. I think it would have been real cool if it had made it to the movie.

  • That's really what I use the terminal for too. GUI stores still tend to feel very slow to install things. If I know the package name it's much faster to just type the command in a terminal.

Same for making simple modifications to config files. 'Sudo nano filename', make the tweak, save and exit.

  • What if, sometime after Win 10 loses support a virus takes advantage of the lack of patches and propagates across all the machines with a simple message "This operating system is no longer supported, please click here to upgrade." The button then runs a script to download and install a user friendly Linux distro. The world is then saved.

  • I agree with that as well. I ride a cruiser and I wear a full face helmet, jacket, boots or shoes covering the ankles, and at least thick denim pants. Sometimes I think about getting a 3/4 helmet but I don't think I could bring myself to do it.

When I was real hardcore riding everyday I wore waterproof jacket, pants, and boots. Now I just don't ride in the rain at all if I can help it.

  • True, no one was arguing against repurposing, and I wasn't accusing you of such.

Your comment said the answer was not to purchase an old iPad and use the money to get a cheap modern android tablet. My response was just to point out that not everyone may be aware of the planned obsolescence, and the particularly aggressive stance Apple takes.

Although if the OP found Lemmy I guess there should be some assumption of being knowledgeable about the tech world 😅

  • I think its reasonable to assume a perfectly functioning, yet old, piece of hardware could be repurposed. We have all just grown accustomed to mega corporations' design of planned obsolescence; when maybe we shouldn't be.

  • If you want to try some niche music service there is resonate.coop which encourages exploration by making it cheap to listen to a song once. However, if you like the song and keep going back to it it will be considered "purchased" and you will no longer be charged when you listen to it. Last I checked there was no offline mode for purchased songs but they were working on it.

  • Do you have insurance or, if not, does your state provide Medicaid to low income individuals? If you have private insurance I would recommend looking up therapists and maybe even psychiatrists who are covered by your insurance. If you have Medicaid your county probably has a behavioral health department that can provide some help.

If no to both, you can call 9-8-8 and ask for behavioral health resources that are available. in your area. You can also call that number to talk about your depressing and self harming thoughts if you feel like you want to give your friends and family a break.

  • When I was in middle school I got into at least two fights in an outdoor stage that was in plain view from all the windows in the admin office. No security, teachers, or anyone else ever noticed.

I'd like to think it was more because they were these small fights where no one got seriously hurt, rather than the staff not caring at all.

  • I advocate to expand people's thinking of the fantasy genre beyond the usual Euro-centric elves, dwarves, and wizards type stuff.

As such, a fantasy book I recommend is based off of Persian magic and setting is called The Wrath and the Dawn. It is based off of the Arabian Nights legend of that region.

Well, my other recommendation is not a book because it was a web comic, BUT, it fits the fantasy genre. What makes it unique is the fantasy elements are based off of Aztec gods and magic. It is called Leyendas: https://www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/leyendas/list?title_no=63874

There is another fantasy web comic with middle eastern elements called Suihira The City of Water: https://www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/suihira-the-city-of-water/list?title_no=39385
