  • Uhm, you might have missed the point.

The 300.000 men are not those on regular mandatory conscription, these are mobilized troops taken from those who already served their conscription.

Conscription didn't stop, and it counts separately. Also, some of the conscripted soldiers reported being thrown to the border of Ukraine, into Belgorod oblast - not quite the frontline, but very close.

And yes, being a male born in Russia I very well understand how military service works.

  • As another Russian, I can confirm that.

Also, I'd add that, while Russia is full of men, and technically the manpower is close to infinite, the equipment is a whole another story.

Government organized a lot of volunteer services to allow civilians to support the effort by donating clothing, collecting money to buy armor and even guns.

Many on the frontlines are constantly talking about critical lack of basic supplies, and drafting any more people is just sending them to sure death without any effect on the actual military effort the Russian government pursues. This is probably one of the core reasons Russia doesn't escalate the conflict any more.

And yes - war is not popular here, but sadly, that's something we mostly have to share quietly on our kitchens.

  • Not firmware, but apps to which the watches connect.

I'm talking watches with Bluetooth-only connectivity, like Mi Band, not full-fledged machines like Apple Watch.

But yes, there is also open-source firmware for high-tech smart watches, too

  • Smartwatch, but without native software.

I do appreciate the extra functionality compared to regular, and the price is lower, so win-win.

I am, however, privacy-conscious and do not allow the watch manufacturer to get any of the data from the watch.

  • Stripping CITIZENSHIP from people is the most bizarre and fucked up thing one could do.

It makes active citizens insecure, and puts a strong barrier between citizenship by being born to two Americans and citizenship by naturalization, making the latter essentially second-class.

  • Man that's news from 2016, like, it's a bit rare occasion, y'know. You're way more likely to get borked by Arch even after reading all the instructions, and it did happen numerous times.

Touching grass is what I do when you take steps to intervene in your system to make an update work.

I see you are an Arch maximalist, but that goes beyond reason. Even Arch proponents are normally not as aggressive on the topic, and admit Arch is too complicated in that regard.

  • A fully functional system, just like any other normal OS?

You hit update - boom - you get one, seamlessly, with no breakages and no other user interaction. And that's how it works pretty much everywhere - except, you know, Arch.

If you're fine with it - that's fine, go ahead and tinker all you like. But don't expect others to have the same priorities.

  • Communism isn't inherently authoritarian, it holds no relation to authoritarianism or democracy, just like capitalism, and can exist within any political formation. Conflating communism with authoritarianism and capitalism with democracy will likely result in completely justified dictionary arguments, as this misconception is actually very important ideologically.

Associating communism with things like USSR or, in an even more cursed way, China and claiming communism is authoritarian is actively harmful, especially considering that neither of them ever had communism to begin with - they had socialism and claimed to be directed towards communism some time in the future.

Such shortcuts, like communism=authoritarianism=evil prevent you from actually familiarizing yourself with the concepts and puts you in a position when you oppose a strawman.

Search engines are out there! Also, it is very much proven from personal experience that older generations can troubleshoot issues themselves when I'm not available. They just tell me after the fact.
