  • @WeirdGoesPro Yeah it's one of the reasons I hope to self-host, I'd rather know what my data is being used for but also it will be cheaper in the long run. I will have to look into the drive things you where saying about as I don't know how to self-host on a NAS and really would love to move to a NAS in the future.

  • @cheerjoy I think in the long-run of the Fediverse it would be better if we can fully export all of our data to a new instance sure maybe still have a redirect account on the original instance you where using but it would be good for not only people that want to move instance to another popular instance but also if someone creates there own allowing you to try out the Fediverse before spending the time running your own instance as apart of it.

  • @KhouzzethFroststone Then if the Fediverse is the best option for people to move to (What it does look like it), They will slowly crash and full if their user experience keeps slowly becoming worse.

  • @beefbaby182 that is a fair point just hope Reddit falls slowly to force users to move across to platforms like Lemmy and Kbin

  • Can we call it Ex?

    Jump
  • @chakan2 I know most of us are now Ex-Users

  • @sab It's also about Quality, currently a lot of PeerTube Instances make you have a limit on how much space you have, if you self-host you can raise that limit to the amount of space you have. Most people who don't create quality content might not last and possibly would just shut down their servers removing their content from the Fediverse.

But those who get donations and any other form of revenue would be able to keep going and even expand their storage if they need to allow their content to be a bigger part of the Fediverse.

Let's take PewDiePie for instance, if he moved all his videos over to the Fediverse it would be only PewDiePie's videos across the whole Fediverse but because of his money behind him, he can host them. Merch, Donations, and any other sponsorship could keep him running the server for another month, especially if someone already has or builds up a community of people that are willing to spend money on them.

  • @CookieJarObserver They as well as Twitter seem to be trying to kill themselves anyway. The more people jump off these platforms and move the Fediverse, the more likely these big tech social medias will most likely try and hold onto the Fediverse to try and survive.

  • @DannyMac Fair enough, didn't know they had the older UI of Reddit for Lemmy.

  • @beefbaby182 Yeah here's for either Reddit going down or for them to possibly join the Fediverse

  • @housepanther Yeah I think it will most likely be on a Tip based system unless people can work out something better for the Fediverse. It's not that bad if it does become a Tip based system as long as people are willing to spend a little on the creators they enjoy sometimes.

  • @AccidentalLemming We need to make sure that these big tech companies don't fall to quickly as outages of the Fediverse could kill it pretty quickly if the millions of users from even one platform did try to move across all at once.

  • @Godort Sounds like a pretty big positive for the Fediverse tbh.

  • @deegeese More the case of if they made it so their systems linked to ActivityPub and then Federated their servers. I would think that Reddit would get all the content that people are pushing away from Reddit and onto the Fediverse back towards there platform making users most likely not want to leave even more as they get the same thing they enjoy just with more things.

  • @snooggums Yeah I sometimes use the browser on my phone to use Kbin but it would be good to have a fully function App in the near future.

  • @Nitrate55 I can't wait to be able to use Kbin on the go, I'm really gonna have nothing be done at that point

  • @MrShelbySan Yeah VMs seem to very complex to me so I haven't quite got into them just yet but it looks like I'll have to look into them as otherwise I won't be able to run half the programs I need.
