My understanding is that gerrymandering affects house and state legislature elections. The Senate and ballot initiatives shouldn't be affected by gerrymandering because they aren't decided by drawn districts. Unless I'm mistaken somehow.
The core of a democracy is that people get to choose their own leaders. Even though I agree with you that I wish people took voting more seriously. I don't think people should lose their right to vote because I disagree with their decision making process. If you want to flip a coin or roll dice or whatever as long as it's your own choice then you can vote for whomever you want. Even if I utterly disagree with that process. That's what a right is. It's innately a part of you. Unless you commit a felony per Richardson v. Ramirez
There's nothing inherently wrong with regular voter purges, removing deceased voters for example, and even the most well intentioned system will have the occasional error. But there are attorneys general, I've only seen reports with Republican ones, who use voter purges explicitly to influence the results.
I'm going to be pedantic and technical but it would be state not federal but it would make me very happy to see the DOJ investigate disenfranchisement strategies like this
I'm not trying to be a jerk to you. It's just a pet peeve of mine when people say or imply that Democrats and Republicans are the same. If it means anything I appreciate your response.
This article says that a higher percentage of Muslims voted for Trump in 2020 than did in 2016. Is it really far fetched to think that percentage could continue to rise?
Hopefully someday it will be a federal law. I think disenfranchised voters ought to be able to sue the governors and\or attorneys general who removed them from the rolls.
All I really care about personally in the "spring" ahead. It's difficult for me to go to work with an hour less sleep. I have obligations that make it hard for me to go to bed earlier than I do.
It's kind of flying under the radar in the US but Africa (this region especially) had been enduring multiple failed and successful coups and more generally Africa is looking at drought, economic pressure, and terrorism. Africa is obviously enormous but there's been a steady uptick in instability. Here's a short article of you'd like to read more.
A crazy fact I learned just recently was Trump got a higher percentage of Muslim votes in 2020 then in 2016.
