  • Idk the exact number but the camera in my phone probably weighs like a gram or so, so Einstein tells me I'm carrying about 25,000,000 kWh in the camera alone, which if served at 5V would be ~ 5,000,000,000 5,000,000,000,000 mAh.

    Guess I'm winning.

    Edit: mafs.

  • Ahh good 'ol iOS. Firefox on Android allows you to install uBlock, but I think FF iOS doesn't. I'd recommend maybe giving Orion browser a try, it looks like it has support for FF extensions (including uBO).

I unfortunately don't have a ton of experience with iOS options.

  • I think SD card failure rates are way overblown if you're buying from reputable manufacturers (Sandisk, Samsung). I'm sure they do occasionally fail, but I've never experienced one.

You're right, for really intensive tasks the costs can climb, but I see people asking for ideas for what to do with a junk laptop and the top suggestion is always something like pi-hole or a bookmark manager that could run on a potato.

Like with most things in life, it depends.

  • Laptop performance when closed is quite variable, but depending on where you live, each 10W of idle consumption 24/7/365 could cost you somewhere around $20/yr (assumes @$0.20/kWh, YMMV). This isn't overwhelming on it's own, but it is "cost difference between a junked laptop and a Raspberry Pi" kinda money.

  • Much like their "no longer recommended" older pixels, it feels like they could likely continue to provide OS updates well into future Android versions. However, without access to the device-specific releases they may begin to lag behind on firmware updates

  • Others clearly have their pitch forks ready to go but the real reason here is because they won NY. I'd be shocked if any presidential candidate in the history of the US demanded a recount in a state they won.

Is 0 votes suspicious? Absolutely. Is the recount process the right way to uncover something happening at a scale to compromise an entire district's election process? Probably not.

According to Balletpedia, it's unclear who in NY even pays for a voluntary recount (NY has mandatory recounts in close elections).

However suspicious this district is, it's not justification for a recount in another district in a completely different state.

If there is interference at a meaningful scale, it's not going to be uncovered by volunteers working without sleep to deliver election results as quickly as humanly possible. The wheels of justice turn far top slowly.

A lawsuit is a good first step.

  • You can click on the terms you don't know to learn about them.

This is what makes Wikipedia special. Not the fact that it is a giant encyclopedia, but that you can quickly and logically work your way through a complex subject at your pace and level of understanding. Reading about elements but don't know what a proton is? Guess what, there's a link right fucking there!

  • My kitchen fridge is relatively new, uses ~1.25 kWh/day, typically draws ~100W when running and never really goes over 200W

My garage fridge is older and cheaper and uses about the same amount of energy, but power occasionally spikes >1kW

With batteries, both could be powered with just ~200 W worth of panels. Without batteries, you may want a little more power or a descent capacitor to make sure you can handle the start-up loads.

Given it's out in direct sunlight all day, you may need an extra 200W or so to offset the solar hear gain.

A typical rooftop panel is ~300-400W, so 1 would probably do it.
