  • Climate was already known to become the future's biggest problems for a long time back then. I read once that Al Gore campaigned in the 1980s with climate change as one of the action points. So no, it's not a new problem.

  • I suspect they are talking about Madison Cawthorn.

There always was a lot of dirt on him: he was known for sexual harassment, he was caught lying several times, he engaged in nepotism and graft, ... None of those scandals were a problem for the republican party, but when he mentioned some dirt from other republicans, they went after him with a vengeance. An example article, but you can find many more: https://wlos.com/news/local/republicans-and-democrats-take-shots-at-rep-cawthorn-over-latest-video

From looking at it as an outsider, I've become convinced that the entire republican party is rotten and only people on whom there is kompromat, are given opportunities to be elected to the highest level.

  • It is not the settings of your enterprise, the file savings mess is 100% on Microsoft. Imo learning to work with it is pointless, since it will be entirely changed sometime in the future again when Microsoft again tries to trick more people into using these programs in order to boost their quarterly statistics.

  • You don't have to be smart to be a conman. And being not the brightest bulb in any room, might actually help Trump doing what he does best (conning people): ethical or non gullible people are very quickly put off by him, leaving him surrounded by unethical people who have no qualms enabling him (as long as they believe that they stand to gain from it) + gullible people that can be milked for all their worth. This is why it was such a smart move for Trump to leave the democratic party and become a republican: the republican party loves gullible voters + unethical fellow travellers. Basically the same reasoning as to why spam phishing mail is so obvious usually: scammers don't want to waste their time on non gullible people.

  • The USA is it's own continent, noone is going to attempt to send troops over. A self coup like that is very plausible, it's been done many times before in other countries and there's nothing exceptional about the USA in this regard.

  • I don't think there's an "at this point", rather it's something he's always tried doing. Corrupt authoritarians/fascists constantly try to push the boundaries and once they go too far, they either go "it was a joke/accident/misunderstanding" or they double down on it. Putin doubled down the last time he went too far, I wonder what Netanyahu will do.

  • I'm surprised it locked up like that. About 15 years ago I was a frequent customer in a store that had these and I never encountered any problem with it, nor did I hear of anyone else encountering a malfunction while using them.

That store implemented those locks because they were the closest supermarket to a college campus. Some students were taking the carts back to their dorms and chaining them up to a tree with bicycle chains. They would also use those carts to go shopping in a nearby supermarket of another store chain.

Different continent though, so it's probably not entirely the same technology. People like reinventing the wheel.

  • If the shoe was on the other foot, then it would not surprise me one bit if the republicans tried storming the supreme court with a mob. Once you throw out norms and conventions and just stick to the pretense of them when it is convenient for you, then a lot becomes possible.

But if the democrats try to actually do things in a legalistic manner, that will take time. I'm already very relieved that they are at last publicly calling out the fascist behaviours of the extreme right media and republican party. For too long they have been pretending that it was all business as usual, while the USA democracy has already been in decline for decades.

  • There is pushback, but if they try to do things in a legalistic manner, these things take time. Biden was very publicly setting the stage for further steps just a few days ago: https://www.theguardian.com/law/2023/oct/01/biden-supreme-court-maga

The democrats could follow the example of the republicans and abandon all norms and decency, which would allow them to play the game on a more equal playing field with the republicans, but in doing so, they would become what they are trying to stop.

  • A quick Google search shows that this is entirely incorrect (both that they were only preserved in arabic and that they made it back to Europe through al-andalus) and it's apparently a popular myth.

From multiple articles (there's a plethora of sources): Classical Greek texts were preserved in the byzantine empire and most classical Greek texts that are known today, are translations from texts that were preserved in Greek (mostly within the byzantine empire). There are a few texts that only survived for a time as Arabic translations, but according to what I read, those are only few compared to what was preserved in Greek.

  • Imo it's going to be large companies and other software vendors that will determine whether or not Microsoft pushes through with this. And based on the software in use in my company, I think it's likely going to go ahead: specialized software that was explicitly stating that windows 11 was not supported last year, now says that it is.

New pc's also come with windows 11 and the users can work with them without major issues. This is unlike windows 8 were the manufacturers themselves returned to windows 7 after windows 8 had already been out some time.

  • I visit Lemmy with sync on my phone and tablet. On pc I still visit reddit. I actually haven't visited anything of Lemmy on pc yet.

The content of Lemmy does feel lacking compared to what reddit used to offer me. And so does the content on reddit actually (feel lacking compared to what reddit used to offer me when I visited it with sync for reddit).

The home tab when logged into the reddit app is just weird, so many subs that I have no interest in seeing are being shown, while subs that I'm actually a member off are shoved down the list. The worst offender for me, was that reddit had decided for me that I should be interested in my countries' fascist sub, just because I'm a member of the pluralist main sub. When I was using the reddit app for a few weeks, I would see racist dog whistle posts daily. So now I don't login into reddit anymore, I just browse it anonymous now.

  • Request granted! My European thermostat that is about 30 years old now, has a display accuracy of 0.5 degrees, so I'd expect more modern systems to be at least as accurate. I'm not going to speak of the actual accuracy, but the display at least is 0.5 🙂
