About the only thing the UK government has done right in the last few years, is getting help to Ukraine. I think the UK was even sending small weapons (shoulder fired rockets) in the first days of the full scale invasion, while most other nations were still waiting to see if Ukraine would buckle or not. And since then they were always early with other significant help: training programs, tanks, ... They did well in this case I think.

I was talking about stories involving rape that made it into international media and that I read about. Uttar Pradesh features frequently in those.

Anecdotal stories and statistics are 2 different things, but it's possible to infer some things from them. One important thing about statistics is that you should never accept them at face value (the same with anecdotal stories obviously), they are collected by humans after all.

That page has statistics about "registered" rape cases. In the registered rape cases Uttar Pradesh ranks fairly low, which does not correlate with the amount of scandals that make it into international media. And since loads of those scandals seem to involve police, it's not a stretch to conclude that the number of registered cases is a vast underestimation of the real amount.

Reasons why it's likely lower: police refuse to register cases against specific persons or cases from specific people (Dalits), but far more will not be registered simply because the victims don't even try. There's the shame of it being known that you were raped, but there's also justified fear of retaliations afterwards, if the police wasn't directly involved in the rape in the first place.

The mismatch between the high amount of anecdotal stories and the low statistics also tells us that there's no improvement to be expected in the next few years. The first step to recovery, is accepting that you have a problem, and Uttar Pradesh is clearly not there yet.

It is by far the highest population state in India. More people = more scandals. But even when you try to account for that, there's still an aweful lot of scandals coming out of Uttar Pradesh.

And many of those scandals involve local police or rich locals who believe that laws are for other people, but getting international attention does land them into trouble. So what we're seeing is probably just the tip of the iceberg, but that's true in other places as well.

I looked up rule 1 if lemmy.ml: No bigotry - including racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, or xenophobia. Code of Conduct.

The code of conduct is that of Lemmy org, I never read it till now and I'm very disappointed by the next part: "Remarks that moderators find inappropriate, whether listed in the code of conduct or not, are also not allowed.". Basically total mod discretion, so by extension, "rule 1" of lemmy.ml also boils down to total mod discretion.

According to the code of conduct, there's also supposed to be first warnings, temporary bans and the chance for repeals according to the code of conduct. Which does sound nice, but I wonder if it's also done in practice in some Lemmy communities. It seems pretty hard to provide a system for this that is not based on happenstance. Does anyone have experience with this?

This does not surprise me one bit from r worldnews. When I last used that sub (2021? Not sure actually), mod abuse was already rampant and correcting popular blatant misinformation, would get you voted down massively, even when you provided a solid source and explanation. A truly rotten sub. Animetitties (seriously) was a far better sub for following and discussing world news. At a certain point, there will have been no active mods with any integrity left in r worldnews and I suspect that that point was years ago. The whole reddit moderation system does seem fundamentally flawed, which was especially noticeable in the default subs.

I also really appreciate about Lemmy how there can be a 2 day old thread on everything and I throw in my 2 cents and even after 2 days, that comment gets read. It really beats the endless reposts (and bots reposting top comments!) of reddit.

That it's a picture of sawdust, that he not even took himself, makes this one funny, but even if it was a picture of an actual white powder that might have been actual cocaine, how could that picture be considered as evidence of substance abuse?

There's bound to be loads of pictures of white powders in a line around. There's also probably loads of people who made flour lines in the kitchen and then send a funny pose to their friends. Harmless fun, until there's a witch hunt out for you apparently. Just having such a picture on your phone is in itself proof of nothing, there needs to be more.

I wonder if it would be cheaper to give these cluster munitions to Ukraine, than it would be to dismantle them. The USA won't use them anymore, so is there a plan + budget for dismantling/destroying them? Historically they dumped large redundant stockpiles like this into the sea, but that's now causing problems, so a more expensive solution is needed.

It wouldn't surprise me if blowing up big piles of the stuff, is cheaper than dismantling all these tiny munitions and at that point, it's likely going to be the cheapest option (for real, not just on paper) to send it to Ukraine and let them deal with it in their way.

Every citizen of a democratic country, who is still inside Russia at this point, is a potential hostage and bargaining chip for the Russian government. There's no independent press or judiciary in Russia and the Russian government has no morals and few scruples. If they need a hostage, they'll take one.

The Russian laws are also a minefield of post truths and petty rules, so it's not hard to find some kind of charge against any individual. Basically everyone will be breaking the law in some way in Russia and the crooks in the Russian government can decide when and where to go after someone.

No, I wasn't, my phone is still completely stock. I use a custom launcher which could slow it down, but no issues there either. The processor just works smoothly in all my use cases and I blame all my connection issues on my network provider (they suck and I have no way of knowing of it's 100% of the time their fault, or only 90%, so I just blame them for every connection issue).

How is the CPU choice and official software support related? Genuine question, I don't follow smartphone tech news, I just look up stuff whenever I or someone in my family needs a new phone.

The comment I was replying to said that this Fairphone was going to be sluggish because of the CPU choice, with which I disagreed because I'm basically using an older CPU from that CPU family without issues, so I know that it doesn't have to be sluggish. Not in a Fairphone though, but in a Motorola edge, so the software will indeed be different.

I'm typing this from a smartphone with Snapdragon 765g, a basically older version of the 778g. The 778g is better in every way compared to the many years older 765g and my phone does not feel sluggish in any way for my use cases: messaging, phone calls, video calls, media consumption, but no gaming. For me the 778g would be the perfect chip (like the 765g was): a perfect compromise between battery life, capabilities and price.

I also have the impression that google jumped on the feature treadmill that microsoft is on. Working with Google ads + analytics in 2016 was a pleasant experience, it was fairly simple and it worked. I could easily maintain it as a side project next to my main job, but a few years later and it had become a feature treadmill where all new features seemed to have 3 goals in common: waste my time by making me migrate settings to basically end up with the same end result, make the product more convoluted to use + milk more money per customer. Add to that, that facebook campaigns were both easier to run and resulted in more good leads for us and it doesn't look good for Google.

The second point might not even have been an issue, if he hadn't ran in the wrong district in his state. It does seem like there's no amount of debauchery bad enough for the republican party, anything goes and they count on the right wing (+Russian) alternate fact propaganda machine to not mention it or to muddy the waters if the scandal has become too big. It's a definite no from me. The color scheme and that floor, just no. The stove sticking out, also a definite no.

All the cupboards also seem abnormally shallow to me, as if large plates would not be able to fit in the hanging cupboards. But maybe my perspective is confused because of a larger stove than I'm used to.

For me, that entire kitchen would have to be replaced after buying. We don't know what corners this house flipper cut though, I would not trust this place to be done well.

It did draw extra attention, lots of extra attention actually. Navalny's problems in the Russian prison system made the news frequently, regularly reminding everyone what a fucked up state Russia is. Immolating himself on the red square would have been far less effective since that's been done a few times already (there's been a few people who have immolated themselves there already). So as a suicide with a message/martyr for a cause, it was in my perception fairly effective at getting a message across I think. Point in case: we're talking about it again even now ...
