  • I love how people are arguing about banning guns in the comments, while completely ignoring the question about what drives people to be so murderous.

I'm not against stricter regulations, but the US really needs to stop treating just the symptoms of underlying problems.

  • I actually have some telemetry enabled on my system, cause I want the maintainers of my distro to have more data to base their decisions on. I always disable everything for proprietary software though, and I dislike opt-out systems.

  • I wish we would live in a world where we could just crack jokes involving trans people like we do with everything else.

  • Micro gang!

  • I'm not even aware of what my accent sounds like. Probably a weird amalgamation of everything.

  • I used to think open source applications were simply the inferior alternative that you choose when you don't have the money for the real thing, but then I started to notice how Blender suddenly looked almost equivalent to the industry standard apps when update 2.8 came out. That made me question my previous position. Fast forward a few years, I now proudly use Linux and FOSS applications whenever I can.

  • Forcing companies to release source code once they go bankrupt or abandon a project can only have good results. Yes, it eats into profits of successors, but something being profitable does not mean it's good. If people would rather use decades old code rather than something new, what does that say about the quality of the new code? This would force companies to continuously improve, rather than profit from stagnation. And it would prune away the parts of the economy that contribute nothing.

  • We have wasted way more money on way stupider projects. Would love to see this built rather than the military getting even more money.

  • I need that cognitohazard

  • I wish we had more people like you on the left

  • I have forgotten about it and later rediscovered it so many times now

  • How do they work?

  • So we're gonna spend a whole bunch of energy to capture carbon, then use even more to turn it into fuel, and then just burn it again? Yea sorry, I am not convinced.

Edit: Unless if course they propose it for grid balancing, like we talk about doing with hydrogen. In that case, I wanna know exact energy efficiency numbers and equipment cost.

  • 7z files can be browsed without decompressing the contents, and tar.xyz archives preserve file system attributes like ownership. They have totally different use cases.

If I want to back up a directory on my drive, I would use tar.xz. But if I want to send some documents to other people, I would use 7z.

  • Translation: Microsoft loves using code that other people wrote for free

  • It being free is only barely enough incentive to use it. If they ever have effective anti-adblock and force users to watch five ads before every video, I'm gone. I will never give any money to a monopolistic company if I don't have to.

  • I don't want to be anti-natalist. I wish we could make sure that our children will have better lives than we do, and I will fight to make that true. But for now, the guilt is too much for me.

  • WSL is just a weird and slow VM. Still beats C++ development with visual studio tho.
