  • As a site admin, I really wish it was easier to modify the content on the front page. We've had some interesting ideas over here, like linking to some simple online games and posting high scores for the site, or maybe just adding some analytics boxes to the site. But for us that's difficult.

A lot of our ideas come from a shared experience in BBSes from the 90s, where they had game doors, ascii art, and other fun site-specific elements. Technology has changed, but there are modern equivalents to all of those things that we wish we could implement.

  • Well, OP is from lemmy.world, where there are tens of thousands of people connecting the instance to the various porn communities, so of course there's a lot in the All feed. Over at lemmy.ninja, we have hardly any. Our paltry 150 users must not be that in to the pr0n.

  • I just started playing it for the first time a few weeks ago. Bought it in the Steam Summer Sale. It was really frustrating at first, but that's because I was playing a survivor and I'm much more suited for the killers. But I kept with it and I think it's quite fun. No toxicity, quick matches, and interesting available strategies. I really like it.

  • Right now? Silo. Every damn episode of that first season was perfect. In a few months it will probably be Star Trek Lower Decks again.

  • That is not true. It will fail with a cryptic error message on all instances that have never searched for fediverse@lemmy.world, and it will fail for Mastodon users. Those are just the ones we’ve discovered so far.

  • There are several ways to link to a community. If your instance has had someone previously search for the community, then they will all work. If this hasn’t happened (usually because your instance is small or new) then there can be problems with the “shorthand” method that begins with an !. I’ve written a full explanation in this article at the Community Search Tips community. It lists the drawbacks and advantages of each approach that I’m aware of.

  • Paradoxically, Apple has regularly introduced features over the years that result in me needing to use my devices less. When I got my first iPhone (an iPhone 4, I believe), every little notification would light up my phone’s screen. These days that doesn’t happen, and Apple has further cut down on those intrusions with focus and bed time configurations. I’m big into using HomeKit for home automation. And while it annoys me that home automation is still such a simple application, Apple has done a good job of insulating me from the need to use my devices when I want things to happen in my home.

In short, letting myself take advantage of the Apple ecosystem reduces the touch-points of the technology I use. I just have to invest the time to learn about features and how they work, and to tune them to my preferred lifestyle.

  • That was really good and worth watching!

  • I've actually used Plex for this before, but I was looking for something simpler. Good call, though!

  • Religious people clearly use critical thinking. They just base a lot off of flawed premises.

  • I live in Utah. Mormons are absolutely required to tithe in order to participate in temple ceremonies. I've never been LDS, but my understanding is that the accounting for how much you tithe is carefully monitored. It's also my understanding that you must participate in temple ceremonies to achieve admittance into heaven.

  • As an atheist, I had to ask myself how I know people are worshiping a god. In the US, it seems to boil down to a few things:

    1. Giving money to an organization in order to participate with the community
    2. Showing obedience to authority by allowing them to dictate some (but not all) of one's behavior
    3. Being hyper-focused on how the organization got to where it is today and whether what they do today aligns with its initial values and goals
    4. Performing rituals in hopes of causing specific outcomes

Based on this, I am already worshiping Apple.

  • The Plex Pass unlocks hardware transcoding, which is a huge benefit alone. As others have said, it unlocks things like skip intro, credits detection, playing trailers before movies. It also unlocks the DVR feature, allowing you to attach an inexpensive antenna to your network and start recording over-the-air channels. It is very worth it.

  • You can do that, but it's provided on iPhone without any internet connection, it integrates seamlessly with system events, there are no download or install requirements, and if you use Airpods Pro, you can mix in environmental sounds. Plus, as another user mentioned below, you can add a toggle for this setting in the control center. That's a stellar implementation!

  • This is a great idea! I just added it, but it's tricky. For anyone coming across this who wonders how it's done, here are the steps:

    1. Go to Settings > Control Center
    2. Scroll down to Accessibility Shortcuts and tap the green + on the left to add it to the included controls
    3. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut (all the way at the bottom in the General group)
    4. Tap Background Sounds. A checkmark will appear on the left.

Now there will be a generic accessibility icon on the control center that will toggle the background sounds on and off.

  • Gotta love that prominent pin-up girl pasted to the front of the terminal in the training video. Sideburns knows his priorities!

  • You know how Amazon has that great feature where if you pause the show you get to see links to the actors currently on screen? A vision pro app could give you that same information off to the side so you don't have to pause. Eye tracking takes this a step further. I'm looking at a specific actress and signal that I want more information about her. I can get just the information about her, not the other actors in the scene, and I can get it in a pane that doesn't block the show. No pause needed.

In the 2010s, a lot of shows had companion podcasts that you had to start at the same time as the show. Or they would have companion apps. I can think of easy ways to improve this with a vision pro app.

A lot of other changes I can think of require collaboration with content creators. Things like signaling that there's a bit of commentary about this specific scene, or embedding easter eggs that you have to look at to uncover, or creating jumping-off points from a show that lead to additional content like Trent Reznor's Year Zero.

  • Looks like I'm behind the times. I checked his wikipedia page because I remembered he ran for Governor of Kentucky, but the page didn't list his political affiliation in that race. But in 2019, he ran for State Auditor as a Democrat. So perhaps he isn't!
