  • How apt, just yesterday I put together an evidenced summary of the CEOs recent absurd comments. Why are Proton so keen to throw away so much good will people had invested in them?!

This is what the CEO posting as u/Proton_Team stated in a response on r/ProtonMail:

Here is our official response, also available on the Mastodon post in the screenshot:

Corporate capture of Dems is real. In 2022, we campaigned extensively in the US for anti-trust legislation.

Two bills were ready, with bipartisan support. Chuck Schumer (who coincidently has two daughters working as big tech lobbyists) refused to bring the bills for a vote.

At a 2024 event covering antitrust remedies, out of all the invited senators, just a single one showed up - JD Vance.

By working on the front lines of many policy issues, we have seen the shift between Dems and Republicans over the past decade first hand.

Dems had a choice between the progressive wing (Bernie Sanders, etc), versus corporate Dems, but in the end money won and constituents lost.

Until corporate Dems are thrown out, the reality is that Republicans remain more likely to tackle Big Tech abuses.

To call out the important bits:

    1. He refers to it as the "official response"
    2. Indicates that JD Vance is on their side just because he attended an event that other invited senators didn't
    3. Rattles on about "corporate Dems" with incredible bias
    4. States "Republicans remain more likely to tackle Big Tech abuses" which is immediately refuted by every response

That was posted in ther/ProtonMail sub where the majority of the event took place: https://old.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1i1zjgn/so_that_happened/m7ahrlm/

However be aware that the CEO posting as u/Proton_Team kept editing his comments so I wouldn't trust the current state of it. Plus the proton team/subreddit mods deleted a ton of discussion they didn't like. Therefore this archive link captured the day after might show more but not all: https://web.archive.org/web/20250116060727/https://old.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1i1zjgn/so_that_happened/m7ahrlm/

Some statements were made on Mastodon but these are subsequently deleted, but they're capture by an archive link: https://web.archive.org/web/20250115165213/https://mastodon.social/@protonprivacy/113833073219145503

I learned about it from an r/privacy thread but true to their reputation the mods there also went on a deletion spree and removed the entire post: https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/1i210jg/protonmail_supporting_the_party_that_killed/

This archive link might show more but I've not checked: https://web.archive.org/web/20250115193443/https://old.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/1i210jg/protonmail_supporting_the_party_that_killed/

There's also this lemmy discussion from the day after but by that point the Proton team had fully kicked in their censorship so I don't know how much people were aware of (apologies I don't know how to make a generic lemmy link) https://feddit.uk/post/22741653

  • Why is this an issue. They have their incentive to keep building and selling. As long as they’re building and selling, it doesn’t matter to the rest of us what their profit is.

"Issue" was probably the wrong word "potential for controversy" would have been more appropriate. It's potentially controversial because if the profits exceed the subsidies you're effectively just giving money to shareholders.

If they’re building make excess profit, that’s just more opportunity for legacy manufacturers to be competitive. Capitalism 101

No. This is entirely the opposite of capitalism. Under capitalism there are no subsidies. If a business isn't profitable then it fails. Simple.

What we have is an abomination of capitalism and corporate socialism. That's the controversy I referred to above. Where governments funnel money to enrich corporations and the select few rather than helping improve population they are charged with governing.

  • tl;dr

When an enthusiastic novice asks what language to learn you should pretentiously tell them it doesn't matter because the majority in use today are similar and trace their roots to the same source.

For pretentious reasons we'll define that source as an *ur-*language because that's a defined prefix that nobody uses in reality so it's a great way to assert I'm more cleverer than you.

Now, here's a long rambling lesson on other ur-languages that nobody uses because they're overly complex but because I'm so much cleverer I clearly know them all.

To conclude I've ignored your original question but don't worry, here's a link to the programming course I sell.

Once you've completed your first you shouldn't bother putting it into practice but instead every year try a language completely unrelated to the first so it's extra difficult. Just ignore the fact it's guaranteed to be a dead language nobody uses in reality. it's more important to be different than have practical skills.

  • So it's a government subsidy at no cost to the government, funded instead by other companies? That's actually quite a neat idea.

I guess the issues arise if Tesla just pockets the subsidy without passing on the savings to savings to people buying EVs

  • That's such a strange way to phrase it but I'm going to opt to believe you're human and asking in good faith.

  • The Proton CEO explicitly used Proton's official accounts and declared them as the company's official stance.

I don't mind people having political views I disagree with. The lines were crossed when his absurd personal views were published :

    • using company accounts
    • as official statements

  • According to commenters on reddit who listened to the ATC recordings: ATC asked the blackhawk to confirm visual of the passenger aircraft. When the blackhawk confirmed ATC told them to wait and then manoeuvre behind the passenger aircraft.

The military aircraft was therefore responsible for maintaining a visual separation which clearly they failed to do. Possibly they were looking at the wrong aircraft. Therefore it seems likely ATC wasn't responsible.

Obvs this all based on idiots on reddit claiming to have expertise so trust it as much as you would ChatGPT.

  • Thanks, I did get both setup with Docker, my frustration was neither ollama or open-webui included instructions on how to setup both together.

In my opinion setup instructions should guide you to a usable setup. It's a missed opportunity not to include a docker-compose.yml connecting the two. Is anyone really using ollama without a UI?

  • Thanks

Any recommendations for communities to learn more?

Frustratingly Their setup guide is terrible. Eventually managed to get it running. Downloaded a model and only after it download did it inform me I didn't have enough RAM to run it. Something it could have known before the slow download process. Then discovered my GPU isn't supported. And running it on a CPU is painfully slow. I'm using an AMD 6700 XT and the minimum listed is 6800 https://github.com/ollama/ollama/blob/main/docs/gpu.md#amd-radeon

  • Praising the pick wasn't so bad. The issues really arose when he was called out on it and chose to use Proton's official accounts to affirm his view and went on to state:

    • the republican party is now the party of the people and most likely to crack down on big tech
    • The democrats have effectively betrayed their voters in favour of corporate donations
    • This was Proton's official stance

It was insane boot licking and incredibly poorly thought through. It's fine for him to have an opinion but completely inappropriate to use their official accounts to spew such drivel and to state it was the official stance should have resulted in him being fired for damaging their reputation.

  • Personally I think nobody gives a fuck about your profile while you're alive so why does it suddenly have significance when you're dead.

Grief is a horrible process that we all go through. Cultural norms are to simply ignore it, suppress it and pretend we've moved on.

The digital age preserves a far greater record of our lives than ever before. I don't think that's necessarily a good thing.

  • WHSmith was the first business to adopt enshittification as a business model.

Back when a 500 ml drink was typically £1 or £1.20 in most stores they'd be marked up to £2 in WHSmith and you'd be conned into thinking buying 2 for £3 was a good deal.

Then the sales desk would be littered with giant bars of shitty chocolate that the cashier had to suggest you buy.

Such a shitty store. Wish it had failed a long time ago.

  • Steam doesn't fit OP's criteria. They definitely prioritise profit over the user's preference.

When you open the app you're immediately shown pop-up ads ffs. And the app opens to the store.

You can disable the pop-ups in settings and default to opening your library by default but it's difficult to locate the relevant settings.

Steam transformed the PC gaming experience for the better but I find people's reverence of it is misplaced.

  • The confusion is because user friendly has a clear definition but you're using it to mean something else.

You could consider editing to say user-centric, user-first, user-focused. Or re-wording to specifically state prioritising the user over profit
