That's literally how I browse Lemmy. And how I always browsed reddit when I was there.

It's so much more interesting when you don't know what you're about to get.

But nobody thinks those people are cool.

Sounds like you just don't want your authority to be challenged.

If you're wrong and a student points that out, own it. Instead you expect them to question their own knowledge while submitting to your authority for confirmation or denial. But if the student already knows, they don't need your confirmation. They need you to admit that you were incorrect, and move forward with the correct information. Otherwise you're just demonstrating that you're an authority that cannot be trusted to be fair.

Authority that cannot be challenged is authority that cannot be respected. Authority must continually earn the respect of its constituents, or it will lose its power over them.

I was mocking the attitude that something can't be discovered by one group of people if a different group of people already knew about it.

Columbus discovering the Americas is commonly called a "euro-centric definition of discovery". While conveniently ignoring that literally nobody in Europe knew the Americas existed.

Dumb TVs are called "digital signage" now.

This is a very human centric definition of discovery.

Caffeine is pretty well studied and it's known that the long term health effects are nothing close to cocaine. I doubt if there was any good science back then on the long term effects of cocaine, let alone enough education for the populace to know and understand it.

However social perceptions may change anyway. What we consider as not serious may be considered much more serious in the future. For example many people get headaches or even migraines as a withdrawal symptom of caffeine, and we don't consider a headache to be serious.

But I saw a Star Trek episode once where Picard gets a headache and it was a big deal because those had been solved for hundreds of years by that time! Turns out the ferengi were controlling his mind or something. So caffeine may be considered a serious drug in the future if it interferes with the detection of alien mind control devices.

If you can actually have a reasoned discussion about it, instead of simply getting angry at being questioned, then you are better than 90% of teachers.

In my experience most teachers don't like being questioned, which of course is directly antithetical to their supposed vocation.

Gulping a big spoonful of olive oil does it for me. That's if I haven't had enough fibre. The oil lubricates things.

Almost everything I do I try to think of a better way of doing it. All of these things people are saying just seem so thoughtless to me, because ... well, they are thoughtless.

If people would think about what they're doing they'd come to these realizations much, much sooner.

What do they do with the plastic?

Recycling companies have been known to sit.ply export it to another country with worse regulations and dump in the landfill. You should try to find out where their plastic goes and what happens to it. You can't really just trust that recycling companies are doing things right.

I mean if you have space for them, those are obviously good tools to save up for.

When I bought a welder I started noticing all these shitty fixes I had done that would be so much better welded. It paid itself off in the first week.

Yeah that's clearly not what we're talking about here. Cortisol cream for eczema is a steroid, but nobody using it would say they're on roids.

We're obviously talking about people who juice for muscle mass.
