  • The mod seems right? Someone posted something that was not related to Fresno, the mod removed it, then the OP kept creating new posts about how the mod removed it. And people started calling the mod names.

As a moderator, I am siding with the moderator. Not because we are both moderators, but because the way this moderator handled the situation looks like the same way I would have handled the same situation.

  • There are very few reason why I might choose to pre-order a game:

    • I know for sure I want to play the game on launch day and dont want to deal with downloading the game all day
    • the pre-order comes with physical goods that I want
    • the game is made by FromSoftware or Yoko Taro, I know I am basically guaranteed to like anything from either of these
    • the game is part of an intellectual property that I like and I want that property to be successful, and I would have purchased the game anyways

Thats really it. Generally niche instances, I don't find myself pre-ordering games all that often anymore. I pre-ordered the Collectors Edition of Elden Ring, the White Snow edition of NieR Replicant 1.22 (still waiting on that Gestalt 1.22 DLC). But other than those two, I haven't felt compelled to pre-order anything else. I learned about Dino Crisis on GOG too late if it even had a pre-order period, but I did buy it on release day.

  • Wasn't gaming basically synonymous with gambling at that time though?

I think gaming as a recreation without gambling didnt really come about until the 1940s - 1950s, right? Commonly, of course.

EDIT: Also of important note, in 1638 the Puritans in the US state of Massachusetts (colonial at the time) enacted a law that made gambling illegal. It outlawed ownership of everything gaming related from dice to cards, and citizens were not allowed to even play in their own home.

  • I both agree and disagree.

I agree that RE1 is the best RE, because it is also the only Survival Horror game in the RE series. When RE2 was in development, Capcom changed it to an Action series. By the developers own words, they wanted to mimic "Hollywood Action movies." They did a good job, but Action is exactly opposite of the genre wheel from Survival Horror. Survival Horror depends on a de-emphasis of action and combat, while Action games heavily emphasize action and combat.

I disagree that Capcom needs to remake RE1 again. The RE remake from 2002, which later became RE HD, is perfect. It does not need Capcom further altering the game to take away the qualities that keep it a Survival Horror game. Konami did this to Silent Hill 2 and that still has me pissed.

Additionally, RE1 is vastly more influential to video gaming as a whole than RE2, spawning a big Survival Horror genre boom that did not end until RE4 came out.

  • Yeah, this is a big reason why I say Lemmy should not be showing who upvotes or downvotes posts or comments. Its not about hiding bad actors, its about protecting people from abusive moderators, because unfortunately not all moderators are paragons of justice.

I realize the irony of me saying this considering I am a .world community moderator, but rest assured I don't care about personal dispute, as a moderator I only care about whether someone is breaking the rules or being a general nuisance to the community. I should never be able to see who is voting on what.

  • I have an R36S, it also has dual TF card slots. But the R36S is shaped like a small DMG GameBoy, and it is really uncomfortable to hold. All your fingers get squished together, so actually playing games on it can be frustrating at times.

The device itself is pretty cool, playing up to certain Dreamcast games very smoothly. And for $40 USD, thats a really good price. I want to know the dimensions of the R36H, because if they can fit in a pocket then they've just killed the R36S.

Also, the R36S comes with two of its face buttons internally connected to each other which makes pressing them feel really really bad. Popping the device open and cutting the plastic link between the buttons provides and immediate increase in usability. I wonder if this issue is fixed or is carried over, as it appears to use the same plastic buttons.

  • This is not exactly surprising, but honestly if you think this won't happen on Lemmy as well then you're in the wrong place. It might not be happening right this moment, but I guarantee there are people who want something like this here too. The only upside to Lemmy is that you can move to another instance, which comes with the obvious downside that you will basically be forced to make new friends. Which is not an easy task.

  • I mean, I agree but what are you going to do about it? Even if they didn't add features, itd be "supply chain issues" or some other made up excuse. Whatever it takes to get Jensen a shinier jacket. But I personally would rather have new features I may or may not use compared to no features for the same price.

  • Blaming GPU manufacturers for poorly optimized games is a bit like blaming forks for people being obese.

Yes, games should be optimized. Thats a given. But its not NVidias fault for making better, more performant graphics cards with new features each generation. Its the game developer's fault for being lazy, not knowing how to use their game engine, and not optimizing their game. GPU makers could drop the most advanced card known to man and that would make no difference for developers. Its still on them to optimize their game.

The artifacting is way down compared to before. AI isn't going anywhere, and I only see it improving with less artifacts in the future. In some videos I have seen some issues but its really unfair since to show them on YouTube they have to record at only 120 fps and slow the game to 50% speed, and even then they also get slapped with YouTube compression. I don't know if the artifacts will even really be very visible or noticeable outside of some edge cases.

I am more curious to see if MFG can be used for games that have a forced framerate cap, or emulators.

  • No, you dont need it, but it wouldn't hurt to have a smoother picture. A smoother picture of course would give a perceived performance increase. So while the card might only be an 8% increase, it could feel like more particularly for games that don't require MFG to be turned off.

I mean, obviously the 5080 isn't really worth the price if you already have a 4080, but still. No 50 series is worth the price if you already have a 40 series. Nobody in their right mind buys a new GPU every generation.

I wonder if MFG can be utilized for games with a game engine hard-cap on framerate, or with emulators to give a smoother experience without having to modify the game files.

  • Is that with or without multiframe generation? I am assuming without?

For competitive or fast action games you should have MFG off, but for games that aren't so fast I could easily see MFG giving a very clearly smoother presentation, and that is only available on the 50 series cards.

  • Its realistic, as opposed to Star Citizen which leans more on "rule of cool, not rule of real." Real life space is boring. 99% of all planets that arent big gas balls are just big ice rocks. Ships are big, slow, heavy objects that take time to maneuver. Elite has a simulated galactic economy, which can be directly influenced by just a single dedicated player. It contains fantasy political turf scuffles, colony expansion, and all sort of other stuff. You can be pretty much anything, a bounty hunter, a miner, a merchant, a taxi, they even added first person shooter parts with the Odyssey DLC (like what Star Citizen already had).

Personally I think what people think about Elite Dangerous is also why so many people complain about Starfield. I like Starfield. While not perfect, it does a good job of mostly "realistic" space portrayal, even if it does contain some fantasy elements. Problem is, people were disappointed with Starfield because they expected Star Wars Skyrim, but got Elite Dangerous Skyrim instead. They wanted even more fantasy where Starfield leaned more into realism. If you like Elite Dangerous, there is a pretty good chance you will like Starfield. But if you don't like Elite, you probably won't like Starfield.
