I don't know about ChromeOS but the good news with the majority of Chromebooks I know about is that you can still install linux on them if you want. The bad news is that at their price point you might as well just buy a used or new but low end laptop if you're gonna do that.

Obviously that's not good news is you explicitly want chromeos but the hardware at least won't be bricked if they decide to trash their chromeos services.
