  • The differences between victim survey statistics and crime reporting statistics are not easy to explain. In the US, trends in victim reporting tend to lead law enforcement statistics by a year or two, which makes one wonder whether law enforcement is padding the numbers -- either to make themselves look good (when crime is increasing according to victim reports and it would reflect badly on them if LE statistics followed suit), or to make themselves look necessary (when victim-reported crime is going down and LE statistics might make LE look redundant).

  • Well... "Why inflation?" is a very different question than, "What is inflation?"

Inflation is a measurement of change in prices, and determined by actually sending shoppers out into the field to check prices on a hypothetical "basket" of consumer goods. So the statement that, "The problem isn’t inflation. It’s prices." is nonsense.

The text goes on to clarify that prices really aren't going up like they did during the pandemic, making it clear that the title was clickbait all along.

  • There's no "I" in team, but there's "con" in economy

We put the dollar back into idolatry

  • The text of the article also says that Max Hightower identifies as a transgender male. His parents refer to him with male pronouns.

    I’m legitimately asking this question

Are you? Because it seems like you're wilfully ignoring the explicit statements in the article.

  • I'm guessing the basic economics were too complex.

  • I see your point. Inflation is simply the aggregate change in consumer prices. It's kind of ridiculous to suggest that prices are rising if inflation is going down. Inflation is literally the change in prices for a defined basket of common consumer goods.

She uses eggs as an example, but retail prices on eggs are back down to pre-pandemic lows, and were high earlier this year because of an avian influenza epidemic, not due to supply chain issues associated with COVID.

  • I'm not sure why the quote is getting you bent out of shape. "monitoring X intake" implies that someone is taking in X ("intake", definition 2 in Merriam Webster ), and it's being measured & reported ("monitoring"). It doesn't matter whether X is food or water or Youtube videos or porn.

It's just the wrong word here. I'm not saying it's history's greatest crime, just a bad editorial decision that leads to confusion.

  • making sure there isn’t too much

which implies that some amount is expected, that's my only point.

  • Right, because making your son your porn accountability buddy is an extremely normal and healthy thing to do.

It absolutely is NOT, and that was one of the several problematic aspects of this that is not resolved by addressing the confusing language.

  • In any other context, "monitoring intake" implies that the monitored party is consuming a quantity of the thing under discussion, and that the monitoring party is getting a report on what, when, and how much.

You wouldn't say "monitoring food intake" about someone abstaining from food, or "monitoring alcohol intake" about someone maintaining sobriety. You'd probably say "fasting" or "avoiding alcohol", or similar language. Such language should have been used here for clarity, IMO.

People on the thread are responding like they are reviewing each other's porn, because the language encourages that misinterpretation.

  • That headline is... incredibly inaccurate. They've pledged to each other to avoid porn, and have software that throws an alarm (visible to each other) if they view it.

"Monitor Each Other's Porn Intake" implies that they are seeking out porn and sharing it with each other, which is not what is happening here.

I think there are plenty of legitimate concerns here, but father and son sharing porn links is not one of them.

Also, I imagine young Mr. Johnson has at least 1 Android tablet or other burner device that is unknown to Dad.

  • RC cars. I was into local club racing in the 90s, dropped out of it when my kids were born, now I'm getting back into it.

The technology improvements in power, battery capacity, and radios have been frankly astonishing. Setups that would have cost $1000+ back in the 90s come as ready-to-run kits for $200 now, and perform better.

  • It was country music, back when it came out.

Now it would probably be called "Americana" or something.

  • I'm a big fan of the Keychron K series keyboards. Nobody else in the business is putting that kind of build quality into a ~$100 keyboard.
