Well, here's hoping you have a better time with us on Lemmy! My Reddit account is 8 years old, but I stopped using it and have been on Lemmy full time for 2 years now.

I think the issue is you are posting too early for Reddit, you should be commenting for the first week at least.

Essentially, the coarse-grained spam-filter assumes that anyone that has a whole bunch of posts ready to go the day they sign up is a bot spammer. Even here on Lemmy, if you sign up then immediately try to copy and paste a post 10 times to different communities, you will get reported and banned for spamming.

The principle behind it is like any social space online or offline: if you are a legitimate new member, you will start on the fringes and slowly settle in, from introducing yourself to a few members, attend events, to then asking questions, before making any influential speeches or going into a leadership position. Anyone trying to fast track that will be met with suspicion from members.

Reddit and Lemmy are similar in a sense. you start as a lurker, become a commentor, then you are well-adjusted enough to post.

The case I know of a company wanting to get the "efficiency" of using chatbots instead of people but not the responsibility of one, is Air Canada. They were held responsible in that case of their AI agent's policy hallucinations. Though the customer had to go through many hoops to get to that point and probably others were affected without due recourse.

There were at least face-value arguments for it before.

So yeah, America, if you had made better decisions, you would still be deserving of the title of the world's reserve currency. But here we are, times are a-changing.

So sounds like if any company has a chatbot customer service using an LLM, you just have to write in uwu-speak:

If you want to talk about personal waste, the problem is two-end: reducing consumption (new stuff) and reducing disposal. Some plastic wrapping, some packaging and single use items are required in some applications (e.g. for sanitary reasons), but we can find alternatives (e.g. bamboo biodegradable cutlery) and look to use longer lasting items over single use. The second is the lack of segragation of waste streams and appropriate facilities to reclaim material from waste. Even if something is biodegradable, if it ends in a landfill it can release methane or if burned it releases CO2. Many landfills have most of their emissions coming from organic and yard waste, and diverting that to compost, mulch and natural gas digester projects.

There are a lot of problems but there are also a lot of solutions. You will have to set aside a level of waste you are willing to accept, and work towards places you can improve or propose items or support efforts that can help. Zero waste for everywhere and everything is an impossible goal that strictly pursuing that will achieve nothing but make you depressed.

For restaurants specifically, when you eat out you can go to places with washable plates and cutlery instead of paper/plastic ones, or for the cheaper end, ones that use bamboo cutlery instead of plastic.

In Canada we have this thing called "bulk barn" (a brand of bulk food stores) that you pay by weight, as much or as little as you want, but you put each item you get into its own plastic bag.

Because they have their marching order wishlists from Pathways Alliance and other oil lobbies.

I believe that user is talking about this post (link to article). They are requesting some evidence or research that supports the contrary claim you are making.

Look at all the criticism from Lemmings and Redditors when an upper class member is trying to side with the movement by spending their money in print media to get the "No Kings" message out. That appears to be in a step in line with that second point but some that support the cause are in opposition to these actions.

The fourth element is especially important now. Don't engage on the playing field Trump set up on what is plain to see is a setup to authorize martial law powers for himself.

But it also means don't let government drive the conversation in media either. Keep standing up and keep the message clear that this is a stand against tyranny and let Trump and his admin flail, grasp at straws and reach for the Project2025 book of excuses. They look weak and unconvincing against the resolve of the peaceful resistance movement.

Based on the cases you have studied, what are the key elements necessary for a successful nonviolent campaign?

CHENOWETH: I think it really boils down to four different things. The first is a large and diverse participation that’s sustained.

The second thing is that [the movement] needs to elicit loyalty shifts among security forces in particular, but also other elites. Security forces are important because they ultimately are the agents of repression, and their actions largely decide how violent the confrontation with — and reaction to — the nonviolent campaign is going to be in the end. But there are other security elites, economic and business elites, state media. There are lots of different pillars that support the status quo, and if they can be disrupted or coerced into noncooperation, then that’s a decisive factor.

The third thing is that the campaigns need to be able to have more than just protests; there needs to be a lot of variation in the methods they use.

The fourth thing is that when campaigns are repressed — which is basically inevitable for those calling for major changes — they don’t either descend into chaos or opt for using violence themselves. If campaigns allow their repression to throw the movement into total disarray or they use it as a pretext to militarize their campaign, then they’re essentially co-signing what the regime wants — for the resisters to play on its own playing field. And they’re probably going to get totally crushed.

In addition to siccing the military on protestors...

• Harris would totally apply tariffs to every country in the world.
• Harris would totally pardon everyone who paid her enough and said good things about her.
• Harris would fire huge chunks of the government recklessly without any regard to what they do.
• Harris would push for a Big Beautiful Bill to withhold funding from judges that would try to hold her administration in contempt.
• Harris would start a cryptocurrency token designed solely to enrich herself.
• Harris would get into rapid back and forth arguments on Twitter (or BlueSky I suppose) with other influential people.
• Harris would try to make every issue about herself, including Canada's election.

She would totally do all of these things in the first few months, because both sides are definitely the same.

"Just show up with guns and the police will crawl away on their bellies and you'll win" is as painfully naive as the "Just show up with flowers and the police will put down their riot gear and greet you with hugs and songs".

Thank you, this needs to be said and highlighted. Whether violence or non-violence should be threatened depends on the context, there's no one-size-fits-all method or easy way to success.

Friday's protests would have been more or less ordinary compared to the many other stories across the country, of communities coming together denouncing raids and demanding release of immigrants detained for various reasons.

What made this one special is that Trump raised the stakes when he decided to call the National Guard against it. The newsworthy headlines were:

• The arrest of SEIU leader David Huerta
• The burnt Waymos
• Journalists shot by the PD
• Newsom and Trump's exchanges

Whereas the grafitti and individual confrontations within the crowd didn't get much attention, so those sorts of actions didn't serve a purpose besides turning attitudes negatively. Chances the people doing that were provocateurs or people that wanted chaos more than to support the cause of immigrants or resistance of fascism.

Thought experiment: if protestors were more violent in LA this weekend such that a couple cops had died, would that have been any better?

I don't like cops but I say no, it would have been much worse. Media got so sad over those poor autonomous cars, that a dead cop would have been the only headline coming out of that, resulting in more of a crackdown from the city and more of a copaganda stance from the mayor and Governor. Trump would bring tanks and stuff down Alameda, we're all worse off. Showing up but staying peaceful is a call on Trump's bluff.

Well Trump or Fox's take on the result doesn't matter to me because Trump's going to lie and spin things no matter what happens...

• Protests stay about the same or increase in intensity: Bringing in the Guard was the right call, look at how this is getting out of control!
• Protests get less intense: Bringing in the Guard fixed the problem!

The narrative to counter that is that the Guard didn't actually do anything except inflame tensions.
