  • I'm still mostly playing doom 2016.

I had a twenty year break from gaming and I've been trying to catch up since I got the steam deck but I remain pretty crap. I'm playing doom on little bitch mode and still finding it a challenge. I'm about half way through, I don't get a lot of gaming time.

I keep starting other games but not getting into them. But I think I'm gonna give dishonoured a try too.

Steam deck is probably the best machine I've bought in years.

  • Yeah I'm the same. People have said they're better for subtle movements like aiming but I find I tend to either move too little with them or spin out of control. Fat thumbs I guess.

  • I thought the old homeworld games were great. Kind of RTS in space ships. They're old now but still good.

  • They provide an easy platform for me to buy games so I use them. The steam deck too. Just because they have a competent product, i don't think that justifies any arse kissing. Like you say, they're a company and they're in business to make money.

Yeah, I can see why developers would be unhappy about the 30%. Maybe there's an argument to be made that the platform gives these games a greater potential market but I don't know enough about the business to try making that argument.

  • Yeah, something like this is pretty much inevitable. We have large, dense populations of humans living in close proximity with animals. Stuff of going to jump the species gap, and yeah it'll probably be much worse than COVID, which was not that severe in terms of death rates.

  • I dunno, I stopped a while back, it wasn't hard really. I've also heard that while they are usually fine with regular sums of money they are not to be trusted with large sums. Just word of mouth an I've got no proof but it put me off.

  • Yeah, I mean you could get gpt or something to write you a movie script. Maybe even get it to give you points on lighting, shots, etc. It definitely wouldn't be close to a good film though, and probably some nonsense uncanny valley shit.

I don't think AI will replace human creativity when it comes to art. It's soulless. I know that's a subjective judgement but it's one I think almost all of us would make.

  • Most demanding thing I've tried on it was beam ng drive, it ran but struggled a bit. I've never yet been unable to play something I wanted to on it.

  • Yeah, I was shopping for lithium on phosphatase leisure batteries maybe two years ago and was looking at spending over £1000 per battery. Now those batteries are not much over £100 and prices still seem to be falling.

  • I am in a similar situation, I get home tired from work and don't have much time to myself, I can pick up my steam deck for half an hour or so but not long enough to get very involved with something. I've been playing doom 2016, you don't have to commit much time to it at once. I'm pretty shit at it though.

  • Don't you just have to make time go backwards?

  • Sauerkraut is way older then Germany. People have been fermenting food a long time.

  • I kinda missed the gamer gate thing, was distracted by other shit and wasn't gaming at the time. Am I right in thinking it was some kind of misogynist incel bullshit? Like, girls aren't allowed to play with the boys' toys?

But yeah, I've seen enough stuff on discussion boards and heard enough anecdotes to see that there's a lot of bigotry in gaming. The hard right are successfully using it as a recruitment platform for kids. Fuckin appalling, but they are well organised and fascists don't have to worry so much about sectarianism.

I just don't get how people can't see that there's strength in diversity. Like, in gaming you want a team with different skills, abilities, experiences, and characteristics. It's the same IRL - a diverse community is a strong community.

  • Alien isolation Uncharted legacy of thieves Resident evil Bioshock infinite.

I'm just getting back into gaming after a twenty year gap so I've got loads to catch up on. I've been enjoying FPS stuff, but I'm frustratingly bad, even on easy mode. Need more time for practise but work long hours, ho hum. Hopefully I'll find time to try all of the above. Recently finished bioshock original and loved it.

  • Man I'm the same. I have a couple hours screen time after work but often I'm tired an just wanna read a book.

I've only just started gaming again after a twenty year gap so I've got a big wishlist. I get excited about games that I want to play, buy them on sale - and then don't have time to play them.

I started gaming when pong and space invaders were cutting edge. There's just so much cool stuff out there these days, damn we're lucky, I just wish I had more playtime!

  • I played silent hill and silent hill 2 long ago on a PS2, really enjoyed them and I'm up for giving this a go. Did you mention in another post that you're playing it on a steam deck? I would be doing the same, how's it going? Steam says it's unsupported.

  • I got a steam deck last spring, before that I've not done any gaming since I had a PS2 so I've got a good twenty years of games to catch up on. It's a bit frustrating how crap I am at gaming, particularly with shooters. I'm trying some different things to try and figure out what I'm into. I recently finished bioshock, so I just bought bioshock infinite. Also alien isolation, Alan wake, resident evil, and Uncharted legacy of thieves collection. I don't get a lot of screen time but I'll find time to try em out and see what grabs me.

  • I'm not at all sure you can assume gamers are leftists. An awful lot seem to be pretty hard right.
