  • I'm sure the most accomplished legal minds in the country will judge this fairly, without bias, and entirely on the merits of the case itself

  • Spent nuclear fuel is absolutely an environmental hazard, but nuclear power is kinda the least-worst option for managing base load right now.

Practical fusion is decades away still, and while solar and wind are great, electrical grids don't function unless they can exactly meet electrical demand 100% of the time. You need something that can rapidly scale up and down on demand, regardless of time of day or inclement weather, otherwise one good winter storm and everyone loses their heating (assuming you've managed to transition off gas and on to electrical heating). If nuclear is out then your other options are hydro (required very specific geography and has its own environmental impact) or gas/oil/coal.

You can make solar/wind more practical by using grid-scale storage, but the amount of grid storage required to fully decarbonise the grid world-wide just isn't practical unless you can generate significant amounts of power through other means.

Personally, my hope is for a zero-carbon electrical grid in my lifetime. Ideally that won't involve nuclear, but if the choice is nuclear or carbon I'll take nuclear.

  • Yeah, I use the Aqara buttons with zigbee2mqtt and a cheap ZigBee dongle - works great. Batteries in the buttons last for ages, but does take a second or two for home assistant to register the press

  • The supreme court will need to decide a) if a former president engaged in insurrection and if b) engaging in insurrection disqualifies a person from being the president. It'll be super chill

  • Haven't linked it into home assistant yet, but I'm pretty happy with my Nest battery doorbell

  • Video won't load for me, but from the thumbnail I'm 95% sure this is kittysaurus on YouTube

  • You don't seriously think this is original content do you?

  • No actual answer, but I'd suggest reading your employers computer use policy carefully - for me at least, sharing an OTP secret with an unauthorized application would be a pretty serious policy breach. Probably wouldn't get fired for it (unless it resulted in an actual breach) but would definitely get a "don't do that again" letter from HR

  • Then you load up your site, go "oh, those ads make my site look like garbage", and turn the plugin off. Ads don't magically appear, someone has to actively decide that they want them and that they are happy with the trade off for user experience

  • Idk. Sure, use an ad blocker, but the medium is also content - if the comic author wants their site to be so full of ads that their content is unreadable then tbh I'm probably going to give up reading. Ads like that don't just happen by accident - ad placement is just as much an artistic decision as the colour palette they use

  • Tbh, if you can't tap out Ethernet frames with a Morse key and decode the response by watching the blinking of an LED wired to the RX pair then you really don't deserve to be on the internet. Git Gud.

  • it wasn't an engineering decision

  • Guillotines need gravity to work, which is why the billionaires are so interested in going to space

  • Not school generally, but definitely university. Turns out giving an 18 year old total agency with very little accountability doesn't really set you up for success. I got through (mostly because a close friend kicked my ass), but was a terrible student and am still filling in gaps in my skills a decade later

  • Stoked that Dr Bell is being recognised, he's an absolute legend in his field

  • Won't SOMEBODY think of the CHILDREN

  • Whelp. Looks like the front fell off.

  • We found a few of those "top 1000 baby names for 20XX" lists, and (over the course of a few days) independently went through and picked out any that we liked, then compared lists - surprisingly large number of names on both lists, which we whittled down to a top 3. In theory we were going to wait to meet them and they could have had any of those three, but we had both gotten used to name number 1 by that point so it was pretty much settled.

    Middle names were grandparent names.

  • Is this even real?
