  • Culture is place-based. It’s about how the geography and food and local population and local religious practices shape you and it is constantly evolving because all of those things change over time. It is not genetic. As japan welcomes more immigrants those immigrants will indeed shift the culture in certain ways because there is a new group of people. Pageants are about cultural celebration, and Japan is celebrating their culture with this beautiful woman who calls it home.

  • facebook is a US company and has a high incentive to reasonably adhere to US regulations and consumer protection laws, especially when it comes to US citizens. Tik-Tok is not a US company and is not incentivized to reasonably adhere to US regulations and consumer protection laws.

Both companies might share your information, but if you live in the US you would have SOME legal standing if a US company did something out of line with your data. If Tik-Tok decided to publicize all your messages I don’t imagine there is much you could do. If facebook did you could probably get a reasonable lawsuit going.

  • I think I had two w-2s one year and it wasn’t until the end of the process that they told me it would cost so I grabbed a blank paper return from the library (no printer!) and copied the details over and mailed it in myself. Fuck you Intuit.

Friendly reminder to denigrate Intuit to your friends and coworkers and avoid Mint, Quickbooks, Kredit Karma, Mailchimp, and Turbotax.

  • What kind of job?

People ask me where I’m from a lot because they can’t place my accent, but I don’t think it’s different at work than elsewhere.

I worked a phone line for awhile and people asked where I was from sometimes, but not the whole grandparents spiel.

  • We pay for the student disney/hulu with ads ($7 I think) as well as Peacock ($6) and we have access to a family member’s HBO Max. We quit netflix on principle last price hike and are planning to set up our own server—maybe plex so we can share with friends. We have apple for free for now (came with a TV).

We also pay for gamepass ($18) which I think belongs in a similar spending category.
