  • Elon Musk polled users on X about reinstating Elez, with 78% supporting his return.

I know why Musk does this - manufacturing the appearance of consent and perpetuating his "vox pupuli" delusion - but at this point, it's so transparent that his followers are sycophantic blue-checks and bots that it's insulting to even pretend this matters any more than a Russian election.

Unrelated other point: love it how Vance sees he's fully reduced to an afterthought, so of course to try to increase his standing with Trump he tries to out-shameless the rest. At this point all of the GOP are like colorful birds putting on mating dances for Trump, competing who can be the most craven and subservient, hoping he picks them.

  • I get that it's usually just a dunk on AI, but it is also still a valid demonstration that AI has pretty severe and unpredictable gaps in functionality, in addition to failing to properly indicate confidence (or lack thereof).

People who understand that it's a glorified autocomplete will know how to disregard or prompt around some of these gaps, but this remains a litmus test because it succinctly shows you cannot trust an LLM response even in many "easy" cases.

  • Yeah, in posting my comment, I was thinking about this as well. It's certainly their tactic and it's how fascists win.

The problem: I don't know how to effectively counteract it. "Stay hopeful," "don't get discouraged" is all well and good, and I'm going to continue to watch the bloody corpse of America get hacked to bits out of some semblance of duty, even if I'd like to look away.

The only response that would actually help is collective action and direct resistance - and I'll certainly join a protest, or something with an actual end-game plan that isn't just "raise awareness we don't like this." But none of the leaders we elected are giving any actual leadership. Even if they were, the media isn't reporting on it so we can't efficiently align. Lawsuits aren't even being filed fast enough to keep up with the onslaught, even if the Supreme Court is potentially captured. The Overton window is moving so fast, they're actually pulling off the coup.

  • I'm starting to adjust to the Trump term and learn how not to be disappointed with these news stories - here's my one simple trick:

Expect news tomorrow to be worse than today, in ways you can't even imagine. Each day repeat this process, with new baseline lowered expectations from the day before. It's that easy!

  • Hmmm, interesting. I'm just using the default Lemmy interface (lemmynsfw.com instance) and Firefox on a Windows 10 PC, at the moment. Definitely no larger version appears when expanding or clicking.

Edit: It loads on Connect on Android, but is a two-stage load with the higher quality version loading after the lower quality version. For some reason that isn't happening on the PC web client, must be a bug.

  • The tariffs, set to take effect Tuesday, are aimed at pressuring cooperation on immigration and drug control.

Canada would have cooperated already, that's what having allies means. This is going to your neighbor and holding their dog hostage to borrow a cup of sugar - they would have done it anyway, but now you're making an enemy for nothing.

And, since Trump announced that nothing Canada could do would stop the tariffs, the only explanation is that making an enemy is the point.

Unrelatedly, do we even have a way to track when Trump is talking with Putin at this point? He resisted having third parties present during the first term, but we still had notice of the conversations. The yes-men and lawlessness already means we probably will never know if and when they're talking.

  • I suppose the question is, how big is the bubble and how much loss of confidence does it take to puncture it?

The stock market has been going up rapidly even during Biden, but the prospect of outright oligarchy seems like it's been welcomed so far by shareholders and a lot of future value is built into the current price - less regulation means more profit, presumably (sorry, democracy).

But if that core assumption is wrong, and actually this may be less profitable, presumably there will be a long and deep correction.

  • If this was the only thing to talk about, for a few weeks (like in a normal presidency), it would be a 10% drop in approval rating at least.

But we've got the DOD, HHS, CDC, OPM, Treasury, and DOJ all being dismantled, looted, or turning into autocratic institutions.

The magic of Trump's flooding the zone is that there is a finite amount of attention we have and that a week or two is all it takes to lose urgency on any issue. Not only is it impossible for us to respond to this because of all the other things, this distraction helps make it similarly impossible to respond to the rest.

I held a slim hope this fascist creep would take long enough that opposition could be organized. Nope, Project 2025 absolutely thought this through.

  • As an American, I totally get it, do what you gotta do, Canada. Like all bullies, Trump only understands someone punching back or capitulating, so punch away.

Hopefully if the fever ever breaks here, there will be some sane survivors left to rebuild the relationship.

  • Well, might be enough time to shine light on it and cause a public uproar since this is pretty corrupt even by January 2025 standards (can't speak for March or May...).

Ultimately shock & awe only works if there isn't enough time to process and respond, so the 30 day delay is arguably very important here.

  • His logic is actually flawless. Let me explain with a metaphor:

Trump has an imagined pain in his foot, so to cure it, he's going to open the hood of the family car and kick the engine as hard as he can. So you see, this will break his other foot and severely damage the car.

    Hopefully that helps.

  • Well, Nvidia seemingly forgot to price gouge on RAM for the 3060 and they had a 12 GB standard version for a while. That should have been the low range standard, with 24 for mid and 32 for high, but they've adjusted.
