Trump wants to annex us in any way he can - economic annexation is easiest. These are serious discussions in the White House, and we need to take them seriously too.

And I can guaran-fucking-tee that Poilievre will drive straight into a US economic annexation, such as described at the link above. He will go along as the US drives us into deeper economic subjugation and dependence.

Yeah, my wife and I reached the same acceptance. We spent the last month or so thinking we were overthinking it all. Now we've realized that it may happen, and we're resolved to stay and do what we can. The kids will go overseas with their grandparents. Between all of them they speak three languages, they'll be fine. We accept that we're likely to be killed but we have to do it for our kids. It's a strange journey but now we can get on with regular life, knowing we have a plan. It took her a bit more time but we both got there eventually.

We're also resolved to protest and push back. I've never really gone to a protest but this is existential.

If there's someone in your life that is on the wrong side of this, and they are worth the effort, come to them carefully and listen. Don't just attack them, as they will dig in their heels. Instead, make sure to ask them why THEY think you disagree with them, and why THEY think you believe what you do. Take the time to talk to them. Don't get mired in policy. And think carefully about how you will answer the above questions when they turn it around on you.

If they are strangers and you don't want to spend the effort, then don't waste your time. Give them no benefit of the doubt, nor any assumption of good faith. They will surely not extend those to you. Ignore them. The sooner you realize they are unfortunately your enemy, the easier it will be.

Just look at one of the commenters on this very post. I truly hope he's an American, for his sake, because if he's a Canadian yearning for hostilities I can guarantee he and his ilk will be the first up against the wall. Metaphorically... of course.

A key problem humanity seems to have, which is exploited by politicians everywhere, is the affinity for black and white thinking.

Capitalism and even neoliberalism are not necessarily categorically terrible. Unregulated versions of these certainly are terrible and unsustainable. And some versions and implementations of ideologies or frameworks are net worse than others.

Absolute austerity, unregulated neoliberalism, unregulated capitalism, unopposed communism, etc, are all terrible, damaging and unsustainable. Unfortunately finding sustainable solutions is difficult and requires thought, time and dedication. And it requires vision and unifying leadership to sell it to the people.

Though I do think that something like a petition having the power to actually revoke a person’s citizenship is draconian, and should never actually happen in Canada, I do support the sentiment.

You can rest easy, there's no mechanism for a petition to do anything except draw attention from those who can.

Obviously the petition is to compel Parliament, or whoever is responsible, to take action to do so. I see this sentiment but I think it's misplaced. The petition is to bring it to the attention of politicians who typically have a blind spot on these things and may not understand or be aware of public sentiment.

There's no mechanism for a petition to do anything directly. But we all know that. I'm personally immediately suspicious of any attempts to create confusion on this issue. It seems to be disinformation.

This isn't stupidity, it's intentional and calculating.

This bare-faced, obvious hypocrisy IS the point. It's right in our faces, and it forces his supporters to defend it. But it's the thin edge of the wedge...you defend this, and it shifts your tolerance window a bit, and the next one is a bit more egregious, and you defend that, then a bit more, and so on until you are defending felons and rapists who dismantle the government against your interests, because it supports your guy and hurts people you hate.

At the same time Poilievre's opponents become even more indignant and angry, and it further divides into two sides - the team, and the other. This is all intended to firm up the cult and further divide out the other.
